We re-verify against the issuer's own page when we refresh this listing, and we stamp that date. We do not claim a daily check.
APYs are variable and can change at any time. The FDIC national average is a floor for what an ordinary savings account pays, not a competitor. Named comparisons use each product's last issuer-page check.
What is BMO Alto Online Certificate of Deposit?
Alto is a trade name used by BMO Bank N.A. for its direct to consumer online deposits, reached at alto.bmo.com after the old bmoalto.com address began redirecting. The CD has no minimum opening deposit and no monthly fee, interest compounds daily and is credited monthly, and terms run from 6 months to 60 months.
The current pricing is weak and it is worth being blunt about it. As of early August 2026 the ladder reads 6 months at 2.50% APY, 1 year at 2.50%, 2 years at 2.75%, 3 years at 2.80%, 4 years at 2.90% and 5 years at 3.00%. The highest rate Alto offers, 3.00% for a five year lock, is exactly what its own Alto savings account pays with no lock at all. Locking money for sixty months to earn the same yield as an account you can drain tomorrow is not a trade with an upside. Alto's savings rate has itself been falling, down 15 basis points over the three months to August 11, 2026, so the CD does provide rate protection, but at a starting point that is roughly 1.35 points below the best 18 month CD in this set.
There is one structural detail that matters more than the rate for larger balances. BMO states plainly that deposits made through Alto and in other US accounts under the BMO brand are not separately insured by the FDIC and count toward your FDIC deposit insurance limit at BMO Bank N.A. If you already hold money at BMO Harris or any other BMO branded account, an Alto CD does not buy you a fresh $250,000 of coverage, it shares the existing one. Anyone using multiple banks specifically to stay under the insurance cap needs to account for that.
The genuine strengths are the zero minimum, which lets you open a CD with any amount, and the fact that you are dealing with a large North American bank rather than a fintech front end. If you specifically want to lock a modest sum against further rate cuts and you have no BMO balances elsewhere, the five year CD does what it says.
For most people, skip it. Competing banks pay above 4.00% on terms of 18 months or less, which is more than a full point better than Alto's five year rate with a fraction of the commitment. Alto's own liquid savings account matches the CD rate, so the CD only makes sense as a bet that rates fall a long way and stay there. Anyone with existing BMO deposits near the insurance limit should look elsewhere on coverage grounds alone.

BMO Alto Online Certificate of Deposit FAQ
What is BMO Alto's best CD rate?
3.00% APY on the 60 month term. The 48 month pays 2.90%, the 36 month 2.80%, the 24 month 2.75%, and both the 6 month and 12 month terms pay 2.50%.
Is a BMO Alto CD better than its savings account?
Not on yield. The Alto savings account also pays 3.00% APY and stays liquid, so the five year CD offers rate protection rather than extra income.
Is there a minimum deposit?
No. BMO Alto CDs have no minimum opening deposit and no monthly maintenance fee, which is unusual among competitive online CDs.
Do Alto deposits get their own FDIC insurance?
No. BMO states that deposits made through Alto and in other US accounts under the BMO brand are not separately insured and count toward your FDIC limit at BMO Bank N.A.
Did BMO Alto change its website?
Yes. bmoalto.com now issues a permanent redirect to alto.bmo.com, which is the live site for the savings account and the CD.
Are BMO Alto CD rates falling?
Yes. Bankrate's tracking shows the Alto savings APY stepping down from 3.50% in August 2025 to 3.00% by June 2026, and rate trackers recorded a 15 basis point decline over the three months to August 11, 2026.
