How to choose business bank accounts

Pick the job first. A 3.50% savings APY does not replace a $0 checking account, and a 3.75% money market APY that needs $50,000 is not an operating account.

  1. Start with how you will spend the money

Checking is for bills, payroll and cards. Grasshopper lists no monthly maintenance or overdraft fees, a $100 opening deposit, and 1.00% to 1.35% APY. Axos Basic lists no monthly fee, no opening deposit and a $200 new-business bonus (code START200, open by January 31, 2027) but no APY. Axos Interest pays 1.01% on balances under $50,000 with a $10 fee waived at a $5,000 average daily balance.

  2. Put idle cash in savings, not in checking

Axos Premium Savings lists 3.50% APY on every tier with no monthly fee and no opening minimum (a BOOST41 add-on of 0.41% for up to six cycles needs a new Basic Business Checking account). Grasshopper Innovator Savings lists 3.25% from $25,000 and 1.55% below that, with $100 to open and no monthly fee. Axos Business Savings lists 0.20% APY, $1,000 to open and a $5 fee below a $2,500 average balance, so it is a convenience reserve, not a yield play.

  3. Read the money market conditions before the headline APY

Piermont's 3.75% APY needs $50,000 and an open, funded business checking account (3.25% without checking or from $20,000 to $50,000, 0.75% below $20,000). The $25 monthly fee is waived at a $1,000 average balance, and the offer is for new customers. Axos Business Money Market lists 0.20% APY with a rate table dated 6/26/2024, $1,000 to open and a $10 fee below $5,000.

  4. Same-bank products are a suite, not a contest

Axos checking, savings and money market share one login. Grasshopper checking and Innovator Savings do the same. Compare Grasshopper checking with Axos checking, and Grasshopper savings with Axos Premium Savings. Do not rank Axos Basic against Axos Interest as if they were rivals.

  5. Do not mix this list with personal high-yield savings

Personal emergency-fund rankings live on the savings directory. A business APY on this page is not a reason to move household cash into a business account, and a personal HYSA is not an operating account for a company.

How we ranked these business bank accounts

We group by job: operating checking first, then savings, then money market. Within each job we sort by monthly fee, then by the APY we verified on the bank's own page, current prints first. Checking, savings and a money market are different jobs, so this is not a single-rate ranking. A commission never changes the order.

No position in this list is paid for. If a paid placement ever appears in a list, it is labeled Sponsored and never carries a “best for” label.

  • The job it does

Operating checking, a savings reserve and a money market are different purchases. The list names the job so they are not read as substitutes.

  • Monthly fee and opening minimum

The fee as published, any waiver, and the deposit needed to open, from the bank's own page.

  • APY, verified and dated

Each APY is read off the bank's own rate page and stamped with the date we checked. A missing APY stays blank.

  • Commissions stay out

Some links may earn us a commission, and it never changes the order.
