Best Roth IRA Accounts in 2026: Fees, Investments and Minimums
Schwab is our pick for most Roth IRA holders, Vanguard fits index investors, Robinhood's 3% match needs Gold, and Betterment charges a flat monthly fee or 0.25% a year.
Schwab is the best Roth IRA for most people as of October 25, 2026. Its pricing page lists "$0 online equity trade commissions" and "No account or trade minimums." Vanguard fits index investors who enroll in e-delivery, Robinhood's 3% match pays Gold subscribers, and Betterment fits hands-off savers who accept a 0.25% annual fee once the deposit or balance threshold is met.
Financeradar data: Financeradar's IRA provider ranking compares 12 providers as of October 25, 2026.
The four compared, in order of fit
| Rank | Provider | Headline cost | Account cost or minimum | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Schwab | $0 online equity trades; $0.65 per options contract | No account or trade minimums | One account for stocks, ETFs and options |
| 2 | Vanguard | No online commission on stock and ETF trades | $25 annual service fee that may apply; waived for e-delivery and other conditions | Index investors who want Vanguard's own funds |
| 3 | Robinhood | IRA match of 3% with Gold, 1% without | Match cap follows the IRS limit | Gold subscribers who keep the IRA self-directed |
| 4 | Betterment | $5 a month below $24,000 with no recurring deposits, or 0.25% a year once you set up $200 or more a month in recurring deposits or hold $24,000 or more | $100,000 minimum for the 0.65% Premium plan | Hands-off savers who want the portfolio managed |
Schwab ranks first because it has the fewest conditions attached to a plain Roth IRA. Vanguard ranks second because its index funds are cheap, but its fee has a condition attached. Robinhood ranks third because its match is large only for Gold subscribers. Betterment ranks last of the four because its fee is a percentage of the balance every year once the 0.25% price applies, and a flat monthly fee below the threshold.
Schwab: the default pick
Schwab's pricing page prints "$0 online equity trade commissions" and, for options, online trades plus $0.65 per options contract. The same page says "No account or trade minimums," which is the simplest starting point of the four. One account covers index funds, individual stocks and occasional options, so you do not need a second firm to hold the rest of your money.
The weakness is options. At $0.65 a contract, 20 contracts cost $13, and that cost recurs every time you trade. If you want someone else to build and rebalance the portfolio, Schwab is the wrong pick, and Betterment is the better fit.
Vanguard: the index fund pick, with a fee to avoid
Vanguard's fee page says Vanguard Brokerage Services "may charge a $25 annual account service fee." It waives the fee for Cash Plus accounts and for clients who meet one of several conditions, including e-delivery of statements, an EIN-registered organization or trust, a Vanguard-affiliated advisory account, 5 million dollars or more in qualifying assets, or Wealth Management. Confirm with Vanguard whether the fee applies to your IRA. An investor who does not meet any waiver condition may pay it.
Vanguard's fund pages are the strongest part of the offer. The VTI fund page prints an expense ratio of 0.03% and an investment minimum of $1.00 (page data dated 10/23/2026). Buying the ETF requires one share, which was $373.04 NAV on that date. On a $10,000 balance, 0.03% is $3 a year. The weakness is phone trading: a broker-assisted trade carries a $25 commission per trade on top of other costs. Vanguard fits savers who place their own index fund trades online. It is a poor fit for anyone who trades by phone.
Robinhood: the match pick for Gold subscribers
Robinhood's IRA match FAQ states that the match is "a 3% match on annual contributions with Robinhood Gold ($5 per month)" and "1% without Gold" for self-directed Robinhood IRAs. Its worked example for a saver under 50 in 2026 reads "$7,500 ... up to $75 extra (or $225 with Robinhood Gold)."
Subtract the Gold subscription, which costs $60 a year, and the first-year gain is $165 before any fund costs. That is a real number, but it has two conditions. The match requires keeping Gold, and the FAQ says accounts managed by Robinhood Strategies "are not eligible for the IRA match on contributions." Robinhood also offers a 1% match on IRA transfers and old 401(k)s, which the FAQ describes as having "no cap on the match you can earn."
The honest weakness is dependence. If you stop paying for Gold, the match on new contributions falls from 3% to 1%, and the advantage that made the account attractive shrinks by two-thirds. Robinhood fits people who will keep Gold for years and invest their own way in a self-directed IRA.
Betterment: the managed pick, with a Premium fee that rose from 0.40% to 0.65%
Betterment's pricing page says "The base price for investing accounts is $5/month," and that the annual price of 0.25% applies with $200 or more a month in recurring deposits or transfers, or a balance of $24,000 or more across Betterment investing accounts. Premium carries a 0.65% annual fee with a $100,000 minimum.
The January 3, 2019 archive copy (archive copy) lists Premium at a 0.40% annual fee with a $100,000 minimum balance. The July 1, 2024 archive copy (archive copy) lists the base price at $4 a month and Premium at a 0.65% annual fee. The live page lists the base price at $5 a month.
A percentage fee costs more as the balance grows. A $10,000 account on the flat monthly price pays $60 a year. The 0.25% price pays $25 a year on $10,000, but only after $200 or more a month in recurring deposits or a $24,000 balance. A Premium account at 0.65% on $100,000 pays $650 a year. A percentage fee is easier to accept on a large balance than on a small account paying it every year.
What the 2026 limit means for each pick
The IRS sets the 2026 IRA contribution limit at $7,500, or $8,600 for savers age 50 and older, according to the IRS contribution limits page. Robinhood's match is capped at these limits, so a saver under 50 gets the $225 Gold figure only by contributing the full $7,500. Income limits for Roth contributions change each year and are covered in our Roth IRA contribution limits guide.
Contribution limits apply to every provider on this list equally. The difference is what you pay on top of the contribution: nothing at Schwab for trades, Vanguard's annual fee unless a waiver applies, $60 a year for Robinhood Gold if you want the match, and Betterment's monthly or percentage fee.
Who should skip which account
- Skip Robinhood if you plan to hold your IRA in Robinhood Strategies, because the FAQ says those accounts are not eligible for the match.
- Skip Vanguard if you trade by phone often, since each broker-assisted trade carries a commission, or if none of its fee waivers will apply to you.
- Skip Betterment if you want to pick your own funds. The 0.25% fee pays for the portfolio management, and that is the part you would be buying.
- Skip Schwab for frequent options trading if the $0.65 per contract adds up across many trades.
