What to know before you open an account

Every provider has trade-offs. These are the ones we found on its own pages and in regulator records.

  • Under $24,000, the flat $5 a month ($60 a year) costs more than 0.25% of your balance unless you set up $200 or more in monthly deposits.
  • Since 1 May 2026 about 0.5% of each taxable, HSA and IRA portfolio sits in cash that earns no interest, and Betterment discloses it receives payments from its program banks on that cash.
  • Tax-loss harvesting (selling an investment at a loss to lower your tax bill) is optional and Betterment does not harvest every loss.
  • Premium needs $100,000 invested, and moving your account to another firm costs $75.

Regulator record

  • Apr 18, 2023, SEC. SEC order: Betterment made material misstatements and omissions about its automated tax-loss harvesting service from 2016 to 2019, including two coding errors and undisclosed constraints, and lacked adequate records and compliance policies. Betterment builds and manages a diversified portfolio of low-cost funds for you. You set a goal, it chooses the mix, rebalances, reinvests dividends and, if you switch it on, harvests tax losses in taxable accounts. It suits people who want one automated place for several goals, such as retirement, a home and a rainy-day fund, and who like knowing a human planner is available if their situation gets more complicated. The Digital plan costs 0.25% of your balance a year, which is $25 on $10,000. Under $24,000 the pricing changes: it is a flat $5 a month ($60 a year) unless you set up $200 or more in monthly recurring deposits, in which case 0.25% applies. Betterment says there is no minimum balance (its Form ADV mentions a $10 minimum deposit). The Premium tier costs 0.65% a year, needs $100,000 invested with Betterment and adds unlimited access to a team of CFP professionals. The funds inside the portfolio charge their own fees on top, and Betterment keeps none of them. IRAs come as Traditional, Roth and SEP, and there is a Solo 401(k) for the self-employed with a $100 annual platform fee. All figures were read on Betterment's own pages on 14 October 2026. The catches are worth knowing before you start. Since 1 May 2026 each taxable, HSA and IRA portfolio keeps a target of about 0.5% in cash that earns no interest, and Betterment says it receives payments from its program banks on cash balances. In 2023 it settled with the SEC over how it described its tax-loss harvesting scans in 2016 to 2019. Moving your account to another firm costs a flat $75.
