Is it worth it?

About $334 in person, or $444 online a month in fees on $10,000 of card sales

A business taking $10,000 a month in card payments, in about 167 sales of $60, would pay about $334 if every sale is in person (Pay-as-you-Go, Basic plan at 3.09% + 15¢, with no monthly fee), and about $444 if every sale is online (Traditional, Basic plan at 3.5% + 15¢, plus $69 a month). Hardware, PCI fees, chargebacks and other fees are not included, and rates change, so the date above matters.

What is Toast Payments?

Sources read on the date shown
Toast Payments is the card processing built into Toast's restaurant point of sale. You cannot sign up for it on its own: Toast says its processing is built for restaurants using the Toast POS, and you agree to use Toast as your only processor. It suits a restaurant, cafe, bar or food truck that wants orders, tables and payments in one system. Toast publishes two ways to pay on its Starter Kit pages. With Pay-as-you-Go there is no monthly software fee and no cost for the basic hardware kit, and the card fee is 3.09% + 15¢ on the Basic package (3.39% + 15¢ on Core, 3.69% + 15¢ on Growth). With the traditional plan you pay for hardware up front and a monthly software fee of $69, $219 or $578, and the card fee is 2.49% + 15¢, except 3.50% + 15¢ for American Express and for cards that are not present, such as online orders. These starting prices are for new customers with a single location, and Toast also says its team builds a custom rate for each restaurant, so a quote can differ. One thing to know: the software comes with a 2 year agreement that then renews one year at a time, and leaving early on Pay-as-you-Go costs $150 for every month left in the term. Toast can also hold or reserve funds if it sees risk, and deposits arrive the next business day only if you close out before 9:30 p.m. ET.
