The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is the mid-tier American Airlines co-brand, built for people who fly AA a few times a year and check luggage. Its value rests on two pillars: a large upfront mileage bonus and a free checked bag benefit that can cover the annual fee in a single round trip with companions. As of August 2026 the public offer is 80,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after $3,500 in purchases within the first 4 months, elevated from the more typical 50,000-mile offer. The annual fee is $0 the first year, then $99. Everyday earning is 2 miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases, at gas stations, and at restaurants including takeout, with 1 mile per dollar on everything else. The card charges no foreign transaction fees, and spending earns Loyalty Points that count toward AAdvantage elite status. The recurring perks are where the $99 fee gets justified. Your first checked bag flies free on domestic American itineraries for you and up to four companions on the same reservation, so a couple checking bags both ways on one domestic round trip already offsets a year of the fee. You also get preferred boarding, and if you spend $20,000 or more in a cardmembership year and renew, Citi adds a $125 American Airlines flight discount. Fine print worth knowing before applying: the bonus is unavailable if you received a new-account bonus on this card within the past 48 months. The APR is 19.49% to 29.49% variable with no intro period, so this is a poor card for carrying a balance. The free bag applies to domestic itineraries only, not international, and the 2x earning categories are narrow next to general travel cards that pay 2x or more on all travel spending. Get it if you fly American at least two or three times a year, check bags, and can meet the $3,500 spending requirement without stretching. Skip it if you split travel across airlines, since transferable-points cards keep your options open, or if you never check a bag, because a one-time 80,000-mile bonus does not justify $99 every year after. Frequent AA flyers who want Admirals Club lounge access should price the pricier Citi AAdvantage Executive card instead, and light travelers may do better with a flat cash back card and buying whichever fare is cheapest.
