Best travel credit cards
$95 is the default. $795 and $895 are for people who will use the credits. Most applicants will not.
We publish 24 cards. Average annual fee: $190. That average is a travel-card story. Twelve cards are $0. The other twelve include Chase Sapphire Reserve at $795 and American Express Platinum Card at $895.
For most people the right travel cards are Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95, 75,000 points after $5,000 in 3 months) or Capital One Venture Rewards ($95, 75,000 miles after $4,000 in 3 months). Wells Fargo Autograph is the $0 version (20,000 points after $1,000 in 3 months).
Capital One Venture X Rewards at $395 and American Express Gold Card at $325 sit in the middle. Chase Sapphire Reserve and American Express Platinum Card only win if you will use the credit bundle. Same-ballpark welcome bonuses, wildly different fees.
Directory: all credit cards. Fee spread: statistics.
The average annual fee across the 24 cards we publish is $190. You can see the pile-up on credit card statistics: twelve cards at $0, then a jump to $95, then $325, $395, $795, $895. Almost all of the expensive names are travel or premium-travel.
I keep seeing the same mistake. Someone applies for Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum Card because the bonus looks huge, then uses none of the credits, then pays $795 or $895 to hold a card they treat like a debit card. Chase Sapphire Preferred (75,000 points after $5,000 in 3 months) and Capital One Venture Rewards (75,000 miles after $4,000 in 3 months) sit at $95. That is the default.
Wells Fargo Autograph is $0 if you want travel points and refuse a fee. American Express Gold Card is $325 with a personalized bonus as high as 100,000 points after $8,000 in 6 months. Capital One Venture X Rewards is $395 with the same 75,000 after $4,000 as Venture, which is the sentence that should make you pause before you pay $300 extra.
The full set, including airline cobrands we publish, is on the credit card directory. If a bonus pays cash-like value, the HYSA guide is still the right parking spot.

Other Credit Cards worth considering
Beyond the editorial top picks, these are also strong choices we evaluated.
Travel cards and premium travel cards are different products
A travel card earns points or miles aimed at flights and hotels. Some transfer to airline and hotel partners (Chase Sapphire, Amex Gold and Platinum). Some are simpler miles you redeem through the issuer (Capital One Venture and Venture X). Wells Fargo Autograph is the no-fee version of the points idea.
Premium-travel is the same idea plus a credit bundle and lounge access, sold at $395, $795, or $895 in our published set. The welcome bonus on Chase Sapphire Reserve (100,000 points after $6,000 in 3 months, July 2026) is in the same neighborhood as Preferred's 75,000 after $5,000. You are not paying $700 extra for a better bonus. You are paying for credits and lounges.
If you will not use those, you bought a $95 card and then set $700 on fire.
The $95 cards beat the flagships on honesty
I like Preferred and Venture because the fee is a number you can feel. $95 is a cheap annual hotel night, or a dinner. You notice it. $795 and $895 are numbers people rationalize with a spreadsheet of credits they will not click through.
Venture X is the interesting middle. $395, 75,000 miles after $4,000 in 3 months, same bonus as the $95 Venture. Capital One is selling you credits and lounges for the extra $300. If you already book through their portal, fine. If you do not, Venture is the card.
Gold is a dining-and-groceries travel card at $325 with a personalized bonus. It is not a starter travel card. It is a spend-shaped card. Autograph is what I would hand someone who travels twice a year and does not want a lecture.
Key Features to Look For
$0 Autograph. $95 Preferred and Venture. $325 Gold. $395 Venture X. $795 Reserve. $895 Platinum. Our 24-card average of $190 is what happens when those last two sit in a small catalog.
Preferred: 75,000 after $5,000 / 3 months (Chase page, September 7, 2026). Reserve: 100,000 after $6,000 / 3 months. Venture and Venture X: 75,000 after $4,000 / 3 months. Platinum: up to 175,000 after $12,000 / 6 months, personalized. Gold: up to 100,000 after $8,000 / 6 months, personalized. Autograph: 20,000 after $1,000 / 3 months.
Premium cards are coupon books. If you will not book the portal, eat at the dining credit restaurant, or go to the lounge, the fee is the fee. I will not itemize credits we do not treat as first-party fields. Read the issuer page and be cruelly honest.
Chase and Amex are partner ecosystems. Capital One is simpler miles. Autograph has a thinner partner list than Chase or Amex. Pick the redemption style you will use, not the one a points blog uses.
Gold and Platinum use 'as high as' language. $12,000 in 6 months for the Platinum ceiling is also a real spend bar.
Delta SkyMiles Gold ($150) and Delta SkyMiles Platinum ($350) sit in our published fee table. We do not have a welcome bonus stored for those two. Treat them as airline-loyalty cards, not as generic travel cards.
Before you apply
Start at $95 (Preferred or Venture) or $0 (Autograph) unless you already use credits like that on a current card.
Write down last year's flights and hotels. If the total is two trips and a weekend, Reserve and Platinum are vanity.
Compare Venture and Venture X side by side. Same 75,000 after $4,000. The $300 gap is credits and lounges.
Compare Preferred and Reserve the same way. Preferred is 75,000 after $5,000; Reserve is 100,000 after $6,000. Same family, $700 fee gap.
Amex Gold and Platinum bonuses are personalized. Read your offer. The Platinum spend bar for the ceiling is $12,000 in 6 months.
Chase has long run a 5/24-style application filter. If you have opened a pile of cards recently, Preferred and Reserve may not be available. That is Chase policy, not a FICO myth.
Evaluation Checklist
Price last year's trips. If you cannot remember them, you are not a $795 customer.
Put Preferred ($95, 75,000 / $5,000) next to Reserve ($795, 100,000 / $6,000). Stare at the fee column.
Put Venture ($95, 75,000 / $4,000) next to Venture X ($395, 75,000 / $4,000). Same bonus.
List credits you used last year on any current card. If the list is empty, do not buy a thicker coupon book.
If the card is Amex, read your personalized offer and the spend bar.
If the card is Chase Sapphire, check 5/24-style eligibility before you get your heart set on it.
Autograph first if you have never held a travel card and you are allergic to fees.

Mistakes to Avoid
- ×
Buying Reserve because Preferred 'felt too basic.' Preferred is the product. Reserve is the upgrade for a minority.
- ×
Ignoring year two. Bonuses are once. Fees repeat.
- ×
Holding Autograph and Preferred and Venture. Pick an ecosystem.
- ×
Treating Gold like a starter card because it is not $895. $325 is still $325.
- ×
Planning a 'points trip' before the bonus posts and then carrying a balance to hit the spend bar.
Expert Tips
- →
If someone in my family asked tonight, I would point them at Preferred or Venture, or Autograph if they flinch at $95.
- →
Venture X is the one premium card I will hear an argument for, because the bonus matches Venture. Bring a usage plan or take Venture.
- →
Platinum's ceiling bonus looks like a lottery ticket. The spend bar is the price of the ticket.
- →
Park leftover budget in savings, not in extra spend to 'hit the bonus.' HYSA guide.

Red Flags to Watch For
- !
Applying for Platinum or Reserve as a first travel card.
- !
Counting every credit at face value when you used none of them last year.
- !
Forcing $12,000 of spend in 6 months for a Platinum ceiling bonus.
- !
Paying $395 for Venture X without checking that Venture has the same bonus at $95.
- !
An airline cobrand as your only card when you do not fly that airline.
The Bottom Line
Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture Rewards at $95 are the travel cards I would actually hand someone. Wells Fargo Autograph is the $0 on-ramp.
Capital One Venture X Rewards at $395 has the same 75,000-mile bonus as Venture. Chase Sapphire Reserve at $795 has a 100,000-point bonus in the same neighborhood as Preferred. American Express Platinum Card at $895 has a huge personalized ceiling and a $12,000 spend bar.
Pay the premium fees only if the credits are a habit, not a hope. Our 24-card average fee is $190 because those flagships exist. You do not need to be part of that average.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chase Sapphire Preferred better than Chase Sapphire Reserve?
For most people, yes. Chase Sapphire Preferred is $95 with 75,000 points after $5,000 in 3 months. Chase Sapphire Reserve is $795 with 100,000 points after $6,000 in 3 months. You are not paying $700 for a better bonus. You are paying for credits and lounges.
Venture or Venture X?
Same stored bonus: 75,000 miles after $4,000 in 3 months. Capital One Venture Rewards is $95. Capital One Venture X Rewards is $395. Take X only if you will use the premium layer.
Is there a good travel card with no annual fee?
Wells Fargo Autograph. $0, 20,000 points after $1,000 in 3 months. Smaller bonus, no $95. Fine as a first travel card.
What about the Amex Gold Card?
American Express Gold Card is $325. The stored bonus is up to 100,000 points after $8,000 in 6 months, personalized. It is a mid-fee travel card, not a starter, and not a lounge flagship.
Is the Platinum bonus worth $895?
Only if you will use the card as Amex designed it (credits, lounges) and you can clear the spend. The ceiling we store is up to 175,000 points after $12,000 in 6 months, personalized. Year two is still $895. I would take Preferred first and see whether you even use travel credits.
Should I get a Delta cobrand instead?
If you already fly Delta, a cobrand can be simpler. Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card is $150 in our published set. We do not have a welcome bonus stored for it. If you do not fly Delta, Preferred or Venture stay more useful.
Where does the $190 average fee come from?
24 published cards, 12 at $0, the rest including $795 and $895 products. Math is on credit card statistics. The directory is here.
