Best credit cards by credit score

We do not have issuer credit-needed fields. Here is the honest grouping: starter cards, everyday $0 cards, and premium cards built for strong files.

TL;DR

Honesty first: we do not store issuer creditNeeded or FICO cutoffs. I will not invent a 690 or a 740. Approval is the issuer's decision, and it uses more than a score.

What we can do is group by product design. Chase Freedom Rise is built as a student / thin-file card ($0, $25 autopay credit). Chase Slate is a balance-transfer card ($0, no bonus). Everyday $0 cards for people who already have a file: Chase Freedom Unlimited, Discover it Cash Back, Wells Fargo Active Cash. Cards designed as excellent-credit travel products: Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95, 75,000 after $5,000 / 3 months), Capital One Venture Rewards ($95, 75,000 after $4,000 / 3 months), American Express Gold Card ($325, up to 100,000 after $8,000 / 6 months, personalized).

We publish 24 cards. 12 are $0 (50%). Average fee $190. Directory: /best/credit-cards.

I need this in the first screen. FinanceRadar does not have issuer credit-needed data in the database. No stored FICO minimums. No "good / excellent" field I trust enough to rank on. Other sites publish those numbers. They are estimates, they drift, and they are not ours.

So this guide groups cards by how they are designed, which we can see from fees, bonuses, and product type.

Chase Freedom Rise is a student / thin-file on-ramp. Chase Slate is a debt-payoff card, usually shopped by people who already have a file and a balance. Chase Freedom Unlimited, Discover it Cash Back, and Wells Fargo Active Cash are everyday $0 cash-back cards. Chase Sapphire Preferred, Capital One Venture Rewards, and American Express Gold Card are travel cards with $95 or $325 fees and large bonuses. Those last three are built for applicants issuers already like.

Of the 24 cards we publish, 12 have a $0 annual fee. The average fee is $190 because the premium travel products exist. That split is on credit card statistics. The directory is the ungrouped list. If a bonus lands as cash, high-yield savings is still the right pocket.

Product design is not a credit score

Issuers build cards for jobs. A student card asks for less history and pays a tiny bonus. A $0 cash-back card asks for a normal consumer file. A $95 or $325 travel card asks for a file that can clear a $4,000–$8,000 spend bar and, in practice, gets marketed to people with stronger credit.

That is not the same as a cutoff. Two people with the same score get different Amex offers. Chase runs application filters that are not a FICO number. Discover has a reputation for being easier on thinner files. I can say those as industry patterns. I cannot stamp a 670 on Discover it Cash Back and call it first-party data.

If a site tells you "you need a 740 for Venture," they are guessing from forums and marketing language. Sometimes the guess is close. It is still a guess.

Applying for the wrong product wastes a hard pull

The expensive mistake is applying for American Express Gold Card or Chase Sapphire Preferred as a first card because a listicle said "best." Those products are not designed as first cards. The spend bars alone ($5,000 in 3 months on Preferred, $8,000 in 6 months on Gold's ceiling) assume a working credit line and a budget.

The other expensive mistake is staying on Chase Freedom Rise for three years after the file is fine, because nobody told you Unlimited exists.

Match the product to the job. Rise to start. Unlimited, Active Cash, or Discover once you have a file and you pay the statement. Preferred or Venture when travel spend shows up and the issuer is likely to say yes. Gold if you already know Amex and $325 does not make you wince.

Key Features to Look For

We do not have FICO cutoffsEssential

No creditNeeded field in our database. This guide will not invent one. If you need a number, the issuer's application is the only number that matters.

Starter designEssential

Chase Freedom Rise: $0, $25 autopay credit, built for limited or student history. No deposit. Low limits are typical.

Everyday $0 designEssential

Freedom Unlimited and Active Cash: $200 after $500 / 3 months. Discover: year-one Cashback Match, historically friendlier on thinner files, weaker acceptance.

Debt-payoff design

Chase Slate: $0, no bonus, no rewards. You apply because you have a balance, not because you lack a score.

Premium / travel designEssential

Preferred $95 and 75,000 after $5,000 / 3 months. Venture $95 and 75,000 after $4,000 / 3 months. Gold $325 and up to 100,000 after $8,000 / 6 months, personalized. Built as next-step cards.

Hard pulls stack

A declined Platinum application does not make Rise more likely next week. Space applications out. Chase's 5/24-style filter is a known public policy, not a score cutoff.

Before you apply

If you have little or no history, look at Rise, not Sapphire. I do not have a FICO number to attach to that sentence. I have product design.

If you have a file and you pay in full, Unlimited, Active Cash, or Discover. Not Gold.

If you have a high-interest balance, Slate is the product. A new rewards card is not a payoff plan.

If you already hold a $0 card and you travel, Preferred or Venture are the $95 step. Gold is a $325 step.

Read Amex offers on the application. Personalized bonuses also mean personalized approvals.

One application at a time. Check the decision before you fire the next pull.

Evaluation Checklist

If your history is thin, stop at Rise. Do not 'just try' Preferred.

If you pay in full and have a file, pick Unlimited, Active Cash, or Discover. Write down which network you already hold.

If you have a balance, compare Slate to your current APR and the transfer fee. Do not add a rewards card on top of the balance.

If you want travel, confirm you can clear $4,000–$5,000 in 3 months (Venture / Preferred) before you apply.

For Gold, read the personalized offer and the $8,000 / 6-month bar.

One hard pull at a time. Wait for the decision.

We do not have a stored cutoff. The application is the source.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • ×

Treating a blog's '670+' as a FinanceRadar number. We did not store that.

  • ×

Applying for Sapphire, getting denied, then applying for Rise the same day. Let the pull age.

  • ×

Getting Discover as the only card and finding out the grocer does not take it.

  • ×

Carrying a balance on Unlimited to 'build credit.' Interest is not a credit-building strategy. On-time full payments are.

  • ×

Jumping from no card to Gold because the bonus ceiling looks grown-up.

Expert Tips

  • Order of operations I would actually use: Rise if you need a start, Unlimited or Active Cash once the file works, Preferred or Venture when travel spend is real. Gold is optional and later.

  • Discover is the everyday card I would try if Chase feels like a reach. Keep a Visa or Mastercard in the plan.

  • Slate is in this guide because people with scores still have balances. Product design, not a credit-tier.

  • Park bonus cash in savings. HYSA guide.

  • Ungrouped catalog: directory. Fee split: statistics.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • !

A ranking that assigns exact FICO cutoffs we do not have. Including this site, if I ever slip.

  • !

Applying for Gold or Preferred as card number one.

  • !

Three applications in a weekend because a YouTube video said 'stack approvals.'

  • !

Using Slate to 'build credit' while ignoring that it earns nothing and exists for transfers.

  • !

Staying on Rise after you have a normal file and a paid-off statement.

The Bottom Line

We do not have issuer credit-needed data. I will not pretend we do.

Chase Freedom Rise is the starter. Chase Slate is the debt card. Chase Freedom Unlimited, Discover it Cash Back, and Wells Fargo Active Cash are the everyday $0 cards. Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture Rewards are the $95 travel step. American Express Gold Card is the $325 step.

Twelve of our 24 published cards are $0. The average fee is $190 because premium travel exists. Apply for the product that matches the job, then let the issuer decide. Their cutoff is not in our database.

Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do I need for these cards?

We do not store issuer cutoffs. I will not invent a FICO number for Chase Freedom Unlimited or Chase Sapphire Preferred. The application is the only source. This guide groups by product design: starter, everyday $0, travel step.

What is a good first card if I have little history?

Chase Freedom Rise. $0, $25 autopay credit, built as a student / thin-file card. If Chase wants $250 in an account, that is a lever they publish. I still cannot quote a score.

Is Discover easier to get than Chase?

That is a common pattern, not a stored field. Discover it Cash Back is $0 with a year-one Cashback Match. Acceptance is weaker than Visa or Mastercard, so do not make it your only card.

Should I get Chase Slate to build credit?

Only if the job is a balance transfer. Chase Slate has no bonus and no rewards. Chase Freedom Rise is the starter product. They are not the same card with different marketing.

When should I move up to Sapphire Preferred or Venture?

When you already have a working file, you pay in full, and you have travel spend plus a $4,000–$5,000 / 3-month bar you can clear. Chase Sapphire Preferred is $95 and 75,000 after $5,000. Capital One Venture Rewards is $95 and 75,000 after $4,000.

Is the Gold Card an 'excellent credit' card?

It is designed as a mid-fee travel card ($325) with a personalized bonus as high as 100,000 after $8,000 in 6 months. That is a strong-file product in practice. I still will not print a cutoff we do not have.

Where can I see all 24 cards without this grouping?

The credit card directory. Fee distribution, including the 12 / 24 at $0 and the $190 average, is on credit card statistics.
