Amex Gold vs Amex Platinum in 2026: Which Fee Pays Back
Get Amex Gold if the fee has to pay for itself: $325 versus Platinum at $895 as of September 23, 2026. Platinum fits lounge users who will work the credit list.
Get the American Express Gold Card if the fee has to pay for itself. As of September 23, 2026, American Express lists that annual fee at $325 and the Platinum Card at $895. Gold wins when restaurants and U.S. supermarkets are the big lines and you will use the monthly credits. Platinum wins only when you will use the lounge network and a long merchant-credit list. New to charge cards? Charge card vs credit card explains the pay-in-full rule first.
FinanceRadar data: the average annual fee across the 37 credit cards we verify is $200, and published fees run from $0 to the Platinum fee, as of September 23, 2026 (credit card statistics). Gold sits above that average, so food credits have to close a gap before the card pays for itself. Platinum is the top of the range, the most expensive fee among the cards we verify.
This comparison is the consumer cards, not the Business Gold Card, which Amex prices at $375 on its business application terms.
Side by side
Figures below are from the Gold card page, the Platinum card page, the application terms linked later, and the cardmember agreements, checked September 23, 2026. Welcome offers are ceilings: Amex tells you the exact amount after you apply and before you accept the card, and that amount can be lower.
| American Express Gold | American Express Platinum | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $325 | $895 |
| Welcome offer (ceiling) | As high as 100,000 points after $6,000 in 6 months | As high as 175,000 points after $12,000 in 6 months |
| Food earn | 4X restaurants worldwide up to $50,000 a year, then 1X; 4X U.S. supermarkets up to $25,000 a year, then 1X | 1X |
| Flights | 3X booked direct or via Amex Travel | 5X booked direct or via Amex Travel, up to $500,000 a year |
| Prepaid hotels via Amex Travel | 5X | 5X |
| Lounges | None | Centurion, Priority Pass (enrollment required), 10 Delta Sky Club visits on an eligible Delta flight |
| Foreign transaction fee | None | None |
| Pay Over Time APR | 19.49% to 28.49% variable (terms accurate as of April 21, 2026) | 19.49% to 28.49% variable (terms accurate as of June 14, 2026) |
| Extra cards | First 5 additional cards at $0, then $35 each | Additional Platinum Card $195; Companion Platinum Card $0 |
Gold also earns 2X on prepaid car rentals booked through Amex Travel and on cruises booked and paid through Amex Travel, then the base rate on everything else. Platinum's card page puts everything outside flights and prepaid Amex Travel hotels at the base rate.
Gold wins the fee test
The smaller fee is the whole argument for most households. Spread across a year, the Gold fee is about $27 a month. Platinum's fee is $570 higher before you buy anything, and you pay that gap even if the lounges and extra credits go unused.
FinanceRadar data: 18 of the 37 credit cards we verify charge no annual fee (49%, as of September 23, 2026, on the same statistics page). These two sit outside that group, so if credits and bonus categories will go unused, the no-annual-fee guide is the off-ramp, and the full credit card ranking shows where both fees sit against the rest of the catalog.
Both cardmember agreements, dated March 31, 2026, refund the annual fee if you call or write to close the account within 30 days after the closing date of the statement that shows the fee, and after that window the fee is non-refundable. If your billing address is in Massachusetts when you close, that 30-day policy does not apply, and the fee is committed once it posts.
Platinum wins lounges and flights
Lounge access is the reason to pay the larger fee, and Gold does not have it. Amex's Gold FAQ says the card does not currently include lounge access. Platinum's FAQ describes the Global Lounge Collection: Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass after you enroll, other partner lounges, and 10 Delta Sky Club visits when you are flying an eligible Delta flight. Amex calls that collection over $850 of annual value and says the network is more than 1,550 lounges, footnoted as of January 2026, and visits you skip do not pay that valuation back.
Flights bought from the airline or through American Express Travel are Platinum's other clear win. You earn 5X on flights bought directly from airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year. Gold earns 3X on flights booked the same ways, and the Gold card page does not print a dollar cap on that rate. Prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel earn the same rate on both cards. Platinum then adds a hotel statement credit on top of the points. Gold's Hotel Collection perk is a $100 property credit on a two-night stay, and it lowers the bill at the hotel.
Both cards earn Membership Rewards points, and the Platinum page says those points can transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners. Amex says the value of a point depends on how you redeem it, so this page does not turn either welcome pile into dollars. A weak redemption can leave those points short of the fee you paid to earn them.
The credit books are different chores
Gold's credits can cover its fee when the merchants match spending you already do. Platinum's credits can cover a larger fee only if your year already looks like the merchant list.
Gold, from the card page checked September 23, 2026, with enrollment where Amex requires it:
- Up to $10 a month at Grubhub (and the other ordering app named in that credit), Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder, capped at $120 a year.
- Uber Cash of $10 each month for United States rides and orders when the Gold Card is the payment method in Uber, also capped at $120 a year.
- Up to $50 in statement credits at qualifying United States Resy restaurants in each half of the year, capped at $100.
- Up to $7 a month at United States Dunkin locations, capped at $84 a year, which is too small to carry the annual fee alone.
Those four caps add to $424, and if every dollar is a purchase you would have made anyway, you are ahead of the Gold fee before points. If you skip the months, the credits are $0 and the fee is still due, and missed months do not roll forward.
Platinum's card page and application terms list a longer set of annual caps. Add the ones Amex prints and the ceiling is $2,984, using the application-terms figure for CLEAR+ rather than the higher number on the marketing page.
- Up to $600 on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection stays booked through Amex Travel, in two chunks of up to $300. The Hotel Collection still requires two nights, and a stay booked on the hotel's own site earns none of it.
- Uber Cash of $15 a month plus $20 extra in December (Amex caps this at $200) on United States rides and orders.
- Up to $120 on an auto-renewing Uber One membership.
- Up to $200 in incidental fees, such as bags and seat fees, from one airline you select, and the airfare itself does not qualify.
- CLEAR+ at up to $209 a year in the application terms. The card page headlines the same benefit at up to $219, so use the terms cap when you add up the payback.
- Up to $400 at qualifying United States Resy restaurants, delivered quarterly, enrollment required, and an unused quarter does not carry forward.
- Up to $25 a month ($300 a year) at Disney+, a Disney bundle, ESPN streaming, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, enrollment required.
- Up to $300 at United States lululemon stores (outlets excluded) and lululemon.com, split quarterly, enrollment required, so an outlet purchase does not count.
- Up to $12.95 a month plus tax on one Walmart+ membership, which Amex headlines as up to $155 a year.
- Up to $200 on an Oura Ring at ouraring.com, with memberships, chargers, and gift cards excluded, enrollment required.
- Up to $300 on an Equinox club membership or Equinox+ subscription, enrollment required.
That $2,984 figure is the sum of published caps, not cash Amex sends you. It leaves out the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit (a statement credit for the Global Entry fee of $120, or up to $85 for a five-year TSA PreCheck membership, once every four years), the lounge-value claim, and Hilton Honors Gold plus Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, which are enrollment perks rather than cash off the fee every year.
The test is the same on both cards: count only credits that match spending you already do, on Amex's calendar (monthly, quarterly, or half-year). If that total does not clear the fee, the points have to do the rest, and Platinum's everyday rate is the base rate.
Welcome offers are ceilings
A screenshot of a welcome offer is not your offer. Gold's application terms, checked September 23, 2026, say "as high as 100,000" Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in the first six months. Amex shows the exact amount after you apply and before you accept, and it can be less than that ceiling, because offers also vary by advertisement.
Platinum's application terms the same day say "as high as 175,000" points after $12,000 in the first six months, with the same warning that your number can be lower. Points on both offers post 8 to 12 weeks after you hit the threshold. Fees, interest, traveler's checks, prepaid cards, gift cards, person-to-person payments, and other cash equivalents do not count. If you return purchases to manufacture the spend, Amex says it may withhold, freeze, or take back the points.
Eligibility is not symmetric, which changes the order you apply. Gold's terms say you may not get a welcome offer if you have or have had Gold, Premier Rewards Gold, the consumer Platinum Card, the Charles Schwab Platinum, the Morgan Stanley Platinum, or earlier versions of those cards. Platinum's terms block the offer if you have or have had a Platinum Card in that family, and they do not list Gold as a reason to deny it. Apply for Gold first if you want both bonuses, because a Platinum history may close Gold's offer. Amex tells you before it processes the application if you are not eligible, and you can withdraw.
Everyday earn after the bonus
After the welcome offer, Gold is a food card and Platinum is an access card. On $750 at restaurants and $250 at a United States supermarket that codes as a supermarket, Gold earns 4,000 points and Platinum earns 1,000. That gap is the ongoing difference, and it reverses on a flight, where the same dollar earns 5 points on Platinum and 3 on Gold.
Amex's Membership Rewards terms (April 2026) say superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services are not supermarkets for the Gold Card. A warehouse-club grocery run earns the base rate on both cards, so your main grocery store may sit outside the bonus. The restaurant cap is $50,000 in a calendar year and the supermarket cap is $25,000. Past those caps, Gold drops to the base rate, which is Platinum's rate on the same purchase.
Neither card is a place to carry a balance. Both application terms publish a Pay Over Time APR of 19.49% to 28.49% variable, capped at 29.99%, with no 0% introductory rate. Gold's table is dated April 21, 2026, and Platinum's is dated June 14, 2026. The March 31, 2026 agreements express that range as the Prime Rate plus 12.74 to 21.74 percentage points. If you do not pay the statement's total new balance by the due date, that APR applies, and interest on leftover bonus spend can erase the reason you took the card. See the credit card APR report for what revolving costs across the cards we track.
Both cards advertise no preset spending limit, and both say Amex can still assign one, so the welcome-offer charge can still be declined, and neither card charges a foreign transaction fee.
Who should hold which
Hold Gold if food is the budget and you will actually touch the credits. That means restaurants worldwide and United States supermarkets, plus enough Uber, Dunkin, Resy, or the named dining partners that the monthly credits are not a new errand. The first five additional cards are free, then $35 each.
Hold Platinum if you already fly through airports with a Centurion Lounge or a Priority Pass club, and the credit merchants are stores you use. The hotel credit requires a prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or Hotel Collection stay through Amex Travel, and the hotel's own website does not qualify. The airline credit requires a selected carrier and incidental fees, so the fare itself is excluded. Equinox, lululemon, Oura, and Walmart+ only count if you would pay those brands anyway. An extra Platinum card is $195 every year, while a companion card is free and is a different product from Gold's five free additional cards.
Hold neither card to float a balance, because interest on unpaid bonus spend can erase the points. For transferable points at a lower fee, read Sapphire Preferred vs Gold and Sapphire Reserve vs Platinum vs Venture X. Grocery cash back without a monthly credit chore is in the cash back guide, lounge cards are in the travel card guide, and credit-profile fit is in the cards-by-score guide.
How we compared
We read Amex's Gold and Platinum card pages, the consumer application terms for each card, the Membership Rewards program terms (April 2026), and both cardmember agreements dated March 31, 2026. The check was September 23, 2026. We did not apply for either card. This is general information, not personalized financial advice. FAQ
Should I get the Amex Gold or the Amex Platinum?
Get the Gold Card if the fee has to pay for itself through restaurants, United States supermarkets, and credits you will actually use. Get the Platinum Card if you will use the lounge network and the merchant credits. As of September 23, 2026, Amex lists the Gold fee at $325 and the Platinum fee at $895.
How much are the Amex Gold and Platinum annual fees in 2026?
The Gold Card page lists $325 for the basic card, and the Platinum Card page lists $895. Both figures were on those pages on September 23, 2026, and both March 31, 2026 cardmember agreements show the same fees. The first five Gold additional cards are free, and an additional Platinum card is $195.
What is the Amex Gold welcome bonus right now?
Amex's Gold application terms say as high as 100,000 Membership Rewards points after $6,000 in eligible purchases in the first six months. The exact offer can be lower, and Amex shows it before you accept the card. You may not qualify if you have or have had Gold or a consumer, Schwab, or Morgan Stanley Platinum card.
What is the Amex Platinum welcome bonus right now?
Amex's Platinum application terms say as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points after $12,000 in eligible purchases in the first six months, and your offer can be lower than that ceiling. The terms say you may not qualify if you have or have had a Platinum Card, including the Schwab and Morgan Stanley versions. They do not list the Gold Card as a blocker.
Does the American Express Gold Card include lounge access?
No. Amex's Gold FAQ says the card does not currently have lounge access. Platinum does: Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass after enrollment, partner lounges, and 10 Delta Sky Club visits when you fly an eligible Delta flight. Amex dates the "more than 1,550 lounges" claim to January 2026.
Do the Gold and Platinum cards charge a foreign transaction fee?
No. Both card pages and both March 31, 2026 cardmember agreements list the foreign transaction fee as none. Purchases that are not flights or prepaid Amex Travel hotels still earn 1X on Platinum.
Is this Gold versus Platinum comparison personal financial advice?
No. It is a dated comparison of two American Express cards, checked on the issuer's pages on September 23, 2026. Your welcome offer, your APR inside the published range, and whether a store codes as a supermarket are decided by Amex and the merchant, not by this article.
