Three Secured Cards for Bad Credit in 2026: Capital One, Discover and OpenSky (Chase and Citi Not Included)
Capital One, Discover and OpenSky secured cards for bad credit, compared on deposits, APRs and fees. Chase and Citi are not included.
Of the three cards on this page, Capital One's Platinum Secured is the one to start with for bad credit. Its card page prints no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee and a 29.24% variable purchase APR as of October 2026. This page covers three issuers' secured cards, not the whole market. Chase's and Citi's secured cards are not included.
Financeradar data: Financeradar's credit card list, last updated in October 2026 with its newest card read on October 25, 2026, covers 58 personal cards, and 33 of them charge no annual fee. Every card below takes a refundable security deposit before its credit line opens, so the deposit is the first cost to plan for.
The three cards at a glance
| Card | Annual fee | Deposit | Purchase APR | Foreign transaction fee | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capital One Platinum Secured | $0 | $49, $99 or $200, refundable | 29.24% variable | None | None printed |

Our ranking
- Capital One Platinum Secured fits a buyer who wants no annual fee and a card reported to all three major credit bureaus.
- Discover it Secured fits a buyer who can track quarterly spending categories and will confirm the APR before applying.
- OpenSky Secured Visa fits a buyer who accepts an annual fee and a 3% foreign transaction fee in exchange for a Visa with cash back.
1. Capital One Platinum Secured: the card to start with
Capital One's card page lists no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, no replacement card fee and no authorized user fee. For a card meant to rebuild credit, a short fee list matters more than rewards. The card page names no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, no replacement card fee and no authorized user fee, and it prints no late payment, returned payment or cash advance fee amount.
The rate is the catch. The purchase APR is 29.24% variable as of October 2026. An archived copy of the same page from January 6, 2024 printed 30.74%, so the rate is 1.50 percentage points lower than it was then (Capital One's card page, archived January 6, 2024). Capital One also says interest is charged immediately on cash advances and special transfers, so those balances have no grace period.
The deposit is $49, $99 or $200, and it is refundable. A deposit made within 35 days of approval can raise the starting credit line by the same amount, up to $1,000. Capital One returns the deposit in one of two ways: as a statement credit after responsible use, or when you close the account and pay the balance in full. The card's status is reported to the three major credit bureaus. A refund means the deposit is money you get back, not a fee you pay.
Who it fits: A buyer who plans to pay the full statement balance every month and wants an account with no annual fee.
Who should skip: Skip it if you expect to carry a balance. At that rate, a $1,000 balance costs about $292 in interest over a year before compounding, by our arithmetic.
2. Discover it Secured: rewards with a quarterly catch
As read on October 25, 2026, Discover's secured card page lists no annual fee. It offers 5% cash back on the quarterly categories you shop, up to a quarterly maximum set when you activate, plus 1% on all other purchases. Spending above the quarterly maximum earns less than the headline rate, so check how much you spend in those categories before you count on the rate.
The deposit is $49, $99 or $200, set by creditworthiness. Discover says deposits must be at least $20 and in whole dollar increments, and it calls the deposit refundable. Discover also says the card's status is regularly reported to the three major credit bureaus. A lower tier means less cash tied up at opening, but Discover sets the tier, so your deposit may land above the lowest one.
Check Discover's site for the current APR, foreign transaction fee, late fee, returned payment fee and cash advance fee before you apply. This page does not print those figures.
The weakness is the rotation. The headline rate applies only to the quarter's categories, and everything else earns 1%, so the card rewards planning more than everyday spending.
Who it fits: A buyer who can pay in full and whose spending fits the quarterly categories.
Who should skip: Skip it until you have confirmed the APR on Discover's site, because a balance carried at that rate can cost more than the cash back returns. A card you cannot price is hard to compare with the other two.
3. OpenSky Secured Visa: a $35 annual fee on top of the deposit
The OpenSky Secured Visa is the only card of the three with an annual fee, and that fee is $35 a year. Its cardholder terms (SKY1-073, accurate as of January 14, 2026) also print a 3% foreign transaction fee, a late payment fee of up to $41, a returned payment fee of up to $40, and a cash advance fee of $6 or 5% of the advance, whichever is greater. The card is issued by Capital Bank, N.A.
The cash advance floor matters. On a $100 advance, the $6 minimum applies. On a $1,000 advance, the percentage applies and the fee is $50. These are our calculations from the stated fee.
A late payment and a returned payment can carry fees of up to $41 and $40, or $81 together, before interest, by our arithmetic.
The purchase APR is 23.89%, which the terms say varies with the Prime Rate. The deposit equals the credit line. The terms say the deposit is fully refundable and returned after the balance is paid in full, but reserve the right to withhold a promotional deposit at closure if fraud is suspected. The product summary advertises up to 10% cash back, subject to its rewards terms. Rewards only help if you pay in full each month, because interest at that APR can cancel them out. OpenSky's homepage, read October 25, 2026, says that on average its users improve their credit scores by 50 points in six months.
Who it fits: A buyer who wants a Visa with cash back and expects little foreign spending.
Who should skip: Skip it if the annual fee is the deciding cost, since the other two cards print no annual fee.
How a secured deposit works
A secured card asks for a deposit that becomes your credit limit. OpenSky's terms describe the mechanism directly: the deposit goes into a pledged account as security for repayment of everything owed on the card, including fees and interest. The terms also say no interest is paid on that account. Capital One describes the same idea in plainer language: it refunds the deposit when you close the account and pay the balance in full. Discover calls its deposit refundable.
How to choose
- Choose Capital One if no annual fee and reporting to all three bureaus matter most.
- Choose Discover if you shop the quarterly categories and will confirm its APR before applying.
- Choose OpenSky only if its annual fee and late fees fit a budget you have already set.
Fees and price history
Two of the three cards print no annual fee. Among the 58 personal cards Financeradar lists, 33 charge no annual fee, so a no-fee card is the majority choice in that list.
The Capital One page printed 30.74% in its archived copy from January 6, 2024, and 29.24% as of October 2026. The archived copy also printed the same three deposit tiers, so between those two captures the rate changed while the deposit tiers did not.
Before you apply
- Check the current APR on the issuer's site, because the Capital One rate has moved since 2024.
- Confirm the deposit tier before you send money. Discover sets its tier by creditworthiness.
- Read the late and returned payment fees in the card terms. OpenSky's terms print up to $41 and up to $40.
- Ask the issuer which bureaus it reports to, and keep the deposit receipt.
FAQ
Which secured card has no annual fee?
Capital One Platinum Secured and Discover it Secured both print no annual fee. OpenSky Secured Visa charges $35 a year.
How much deposit do I need?
Capital One's opening deposit is one of three tiers, and Discover's is set by creditworthiness. The OpenSky minimum is in the table above, and the deposit becomes the credit line.
Is the deposit refundable?
Yes, on the terms each issuer publishes. Capital One returns the deposit as a statement credit after responsible use, or when you close the account and pay in full. Discover calls its deposit refundable. OpenSky's terms say it is fully refundable once the balance is paid in full, with a fraud carve-out at closure.
Does a secured card help build credit?
Capital One and Discover both say the card's status is reported to the three major credit bureaus. For OpenSky, check the bureaus on its site. Reporting carries your payment history, so on-time payments matter most.
What can OpenSky cost in one bad year?
Set up autopay on the due date before anything else. The terms allow a late payment fee of up to $41 and a returned payment fee of up to $40, so a late payment and a returned payment can carry fees of up to $41 and $40, or $81 together, before interest, by our arithmetic. The cash advance fee is $6 or a percentage of the advance, whichever is greater.
Which of these three suits a first-time buyer?
Capital One Platinum Secured fits best of the three, because it prints no annual fee and reports to all three bureaus. Discover is the second choice once its APR and fees are confirmed.
Verdict
Of the three, Capital One Platinum Secured fits a first card best. It prints no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, and it reports to the three major bureaus. Choose Discover only after you confirm its APR and fees on its site. Skip OpenSky Secured Visa unless its annual fee and late fees fit a budget you have already set.
