Venmo Credit Card Review in 2026: Rewards, Fees and Who It Fits

No annual fee, 3% back on dining, entertainment and Venmo checkout, 1% elsewhere. Paying people by card costs 3%, and APRs run 18.74% to 30.74%, so it suits people who pay in full.

The Venmo Credit Card is worth it for people who pay the statement in full, spend on dining and entertainment, and check out with Venmo. It has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, and it pays 3% back on those categories and on Venmo checkout, with 1% on everything else. The costly part is paying people with it. Venmo charges 3% to send money by card, against a 1% reward on a personal payment.

FinanceRadar data: 36 of the 65 credit cards we verify (55%) charge no annual fee, as of October 10, 2026 (credit card statistics). Venmo's $0 fee puts it with that majority, so the real test is the APR and how you pay. The no-annual-fee guide covers other cards in that group.

The Venmo Visa and the Venmo Visa Signature share one set of rates and rewards, and Synchrony Bank issues both. This review uses Venmo's card page, Venmo's fee schedule, Synchrony's rewards terms and its Terms and Rates. We read all four on October 10, 2026.

The fees at a glance

Most of what this card costs comes from interest and from how you pay, not from a yearly fee. The table lists each cost we found and what it means for you.

Annual fee$0No yearly charge on either version

Penalty APRPrime plus 27.49%Can apply after a late payment
Late payment$30, or $41 after a missed payment in the prior six cyclesThe higher fee applies to a repeat miss
Returned payment$30, or $41 after a returned payment in the prior six cyclesSame two tiers as the late fee
Minimum interest$2.00Applies whenever any interest is charged
Paper statement$1.99 a monthElectronic statements avoid it

Cash back to your bankStandard $0; instant 1.75%, minimum $0.25, maximum $25Charged by Venmo on your Venmo balance, not by the card

The purchase, cash advance and penalty APRs all move with Prime, and no account type can exceed 35.99%. The terms we read include no balance-transfer offer, so treat this as a spending card, not a way to pay down debt. Our fee comparison across cards puts these charges next to other issuers' fees.

Rewards: 3% on three kinds of spend, 1% on the rest

The headline "up to 4%" needs a split bonus. Without one, the card pays 3% in three places and 1% everywhere else.

CategoryRateWhat counts
Dining and nightlife3%Restaurants, carryout, drive-throughs, delivery, bars and liquor stores
Entertainment3%Movie theaters, concerts, streaming subscriptions, digital books and games, amusement parks, music and toy stores, gyms and clubs
Paying with Venmo3%Venmo checkout online, payments to a business profile, and Venmo payments for goods or services
Split bonusExtra 1%Dining or entertainment bills split in the app, with friends paying within 30 days
Personal Venmo payments1%Payments that are not for goods or services
Everything else1%Groceries, gas, travel and all other Visa purchases

Purchases made through a third-party payment account, a mobile wallet or a card reader that does not pass the merchant category code earn only 1%, so a dining charge can miss its bonus. Cash back is not capped in the current terms, but the program lets Venmo and Synchrony add a cap on any category at any time. Rewards post to your Venmo balance each day, usually within three business days, and from there can go to a bank account, a debit card or a payment.

Here is what $2,000 a month looks like under these categories. The arithmetic is ours, with no cap applied.

Monthly spendAmountRateCash back
Dining and entertainment$4003%$12
Paying with Venmo$3003%$9
Everything else$1,3001%$13
Total$2,000$34 a month, $408 a year

That works out to about 1.7% back on $24,000 of yearly spend, well short of the 4% headline. The split bonus adds $2 a month for every $200 of dining or entertainment that friends split and pay within 30 days, so it helps only if you already split bills in the app.

The 3% trap: paying people with the card

Sending money to a person with the card costs 3%, and the card pays only 1% on a personal payment. On a $100 payment to a friend, the fee is $3 and the reward is $1, so you lose $2. If the payment is for goods or services, the reward rises to 3%, which cancels the fee and leaves the net at zero. A payment to a non-U.S. PayPal account costs 5% (between $0.99 and $4.99) plus another 3%.

Pay friends from your Venmo balance or your bank account, and keep the card for purchases.

APR and carried balances

Thirty-five of the 65 credit cards we verify (54%) offer a 0% intro APR period, and Venmo's terms offer none. Venmo's card is revolving credit, not a charge card, so the balance rules matter. The charge card explainer covers the difference.

Account typePurchase APR at openingAfter opening
Type 118.74%Prime plus 11.99%
Type 227.74%Prime plus 20.99%
Type 330.74%Prime plus 23.99%

These rates come from Synchrony's disclosure dated January 1, 2026, and they move with Prime. Synchrony says only a limited number of applicants receive Account Type 1, so plan on Type 2 or Type 3 unless your approval says otherwise.

A $1,000 balance carried for a year costs about $187 at Type 1, $277 at Type 2 and $307 at Type 3 in simple interest, before any fee. Three percent on $1,000 of dining earns $30 once. At Type 3, the interest bill is about ten times that reward.

Purchases carry no interest if you pay the full balance by the due date, which falls at least 23 days after each statement closes. Interest on cash advances starts the day you take one. A $100 cash advance costs $10 up front, a 10% fee, and then accrues interest at Prime plus 23.99%. The cash advance fee guide shows how other cards price the same move.

Where the card loses

  • No welcome bonus. Venmo's card page leads with rewards and the lack of an annual fee. It mentions no welcome offer, and the terms describe none.
  • Groceries, gas and travel earn 1%. Those purchases fall in "everything else," so a household that spends most at the supermarket and the pump gets the lowest rate on the card. If cash back is the goal, the cash back guide compares flat-rate cards.
  • Rewards start in Venmo. Cash back lands in your Venmo balance, and it reaches a bank account only when you move it there. Rewards not yet moved are forfeited if Synchrony closes the card or the Venmo account closes.
  • The terms can change. Venmo and Synchrony can add a cap at any time, and the 4% headline depends on a split bonus that needs friends to pay within 30 days.

Who it fits, and who should skip it

The card fits a Venmo user who pays the statement in full, spends most on dining, streaming and events, and checks out with Venmo. It also suits someone who wants cash back to land in the same app that holds their money.

Skip it if you pay friends with a credit card, carry a balance, want a flat-rate card for groceries or travel, or want a welcome bonus. To apply, you must be 18 or older, a U.S. resident, and a Venmo account holder in good standing for at least 30 days. For a card that pays on rent instead, see the Bilt Blue Card review.

FAQ

Is the Venmo Credit Card worth it?

Yes, for people who pay the statement in full and spend most on dining, entertainment and Venmo checkout. It has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, and it pays 3% in those categories and 1% elsewhere. It is a poor choice if you pay friends with it, since that costs 3%, or if you carry a balance at an APR of 18.74% to 30.74% at opening.

Does the Venmo Credit Card charge a foreign transaction fee?

No. The Venmo Visa and Venmo Visa Signature carry no foreign transaction fee, according to Synchrony's Terms and Rates. The 2.50% international fee starts November 4, 2026, but it applies to the Venmo Debit Card, not the credit card. Other cards with no foreign fee are in the no-foreign-fee guide.

What is the Venmo Credit Card APR in 2026?

The purchase APR is 18.74%, 27.74% or 30.74% when you open the account, depending on the account type. After that it moves with Prime, at Prime plus 11.99%, 20.99% or 23.99%. The cash advance APR is Prime plus 23.99%, and the penalty APR is Prime plus 27.49%. The disclosure dated January 1, 2026 caps every account type at 35.99%.

Does Venmo charge a fee to pay people with the credit card?

Yes. Venmo charges 3% to send money by credit card to a Venmo account or a U.S. PayPal account, which covers paying a person. On $100, that is a $3 fee. The card pays 1% on a personal payment and 3% on one for goods or services, so you lose $2 on the first and break even on the second.

How much cash back does the Venmo Credit Card pay?

It pays 3% in three categories: dining and nightlife, entertainment, and paying with Venmo. Everything else earns 1%. A split bonus adds 1% on dining or entertainment when friends pay you back in the app within 30 days, so the top rate is 4%. The current terms set no cap, though Venmo can add one later.

Does the Venmo Credit Card have a welcome bonus or an annual fee?

It has no annual fee. The card page and the terms we read describe no welcome bonus, so the value rests on ongoing rewards: 3% in three categories and 1% elsewhere.

How we checked

We read Venmo's card page and fee schedule, and Synchrony's rewards terms and Terms and Rates, all on October 10, 2026. Synchrony's disclosure says its costs are accurate as of January 1, 2026, and Venmo's fee page dates its card costs to June 27, 2024. The two agree on every card fee and APR formula we compared, so this page takes APRs and card fees from Synchrony and the 3% card-funded transfer fee from Venmo.

Synchrony's combined Terms and Rates still includes an older rewards summary that describes a top-category program. The current rewards terms and Venmo's card page describe the program above, so we used those. The card statistic comes from our own credit card data on the same day. We did not apply for the card, and how we rate sets out our method. Our arithmetic uses the published rates, simple interest and no cap, and is labeled as ours.
