Delta SkyMiles Gold vs Platinum vs Reserve in 2026
Hold Delta SkyMiles Gold when the fee has to stay small: $0 the first year, then $150, against Platinum at $350 and Reserve at $650 as of September 23, 2026.
Hold the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card when the annual fee has to stay small. As of September 23, 2026, American Express lists Gold at $0 for the first year and $150 after that, Platinum at $350, and Reserve at $650. Gold fits Delta trips where a checked bag is the perk that matters. Platinum fits a companion fare you will actually book after the card renews. Reserve fits Sky Club visits, and it is a weak card for groceries and restaurants.
FinanceRadar data: the average annual fee across the 37 credit cards we verify is $200, and published fees in that set run from $0 to $895, as of September 23, 2026 (credit card statistics). Gold's ongoing fee sits under that average, so a couple of checked bags can close the gap. Platinum and Reserve sit above it, which means a companion ticket or a lounge visit has to earn the difference back before the miles do.
This page covers the consumer cards. Delta also issues business versions with different welcome offers, and those cards are not scored here, so a business spender should not read the bonuses below as the business-card offer.
Side by side
Figures below come from the Gold, Platinum, and Reserve card pages, the benefit terms linked from those applications, and Delta's personal-card page, checked September 23, 2026. Welcome offers in the table are ceilings, not the bonus your application is guaranteed to show. Delta says offers vary and you may not be eligible, and Amex shows the exact amount before you accept the card, so match that screen to the row before you count on the headline number.
| Gold | Platinum | Reserve | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 first year, then $150 | $350 | $650 |
| Public welcome offer through November 4, 2026 | As high as 80,000 miles plus a $250 statement credit after $3,000 in 6 months | As high as 90,000 miles plus a $300 statement credit after $4,000 in 6 months | Two Delta Comfort or Main round trips plus 50,000 miles after $10,000 in 6 months |
| Miles on Delta purchases | 2X | 3X | 3X |
| Hotels booked directly | 1X | 3X | 1X |
| U.S. supermarkets and restaurants | 2X | 2X | 1X |
| Delta Sky Club | None | None | 15 visits a year, unlimited after $75,000 in a calendar year |
| Companion certificate | None | Delta Main, each year after renewal | Delta First, Premium Select, Comfort, or Main, each year after renewal |
| Medallion Qualification Dollars | None from the card | $2,500 headstart, then 1 MQD per $20 spent | $2,500 headstart, then 1 MQD per $10 spent |
| Foreign transaction fee | None | None | None |
| Purchase APR | 19.49% to 28.49% variable | Same range | Same range |
Miles on all three cards post to a Delta SkyMiles account, and they are not Membership Rewards points, so there is no Amex transfer list that can move them to another airline. A household that wants points it can send to many partners needs a different card, which is the split in Sapphire Reserve vs Amex Platinum vs Venture X.
Gold wins on the fee and the bags
The first-year waiver is the argument for people who fly Delta a few times a year. After that year Gold is still the cheapest of the three, and the March 31, 2026 cardmember agreement lists additional cards at no annual fee, so a partner on the account does not add a second charge. That agreement refunds the annual fee if you close within 30 days after the closing date of the statement that shows the fee, and after that window the fee stays.
FinanceRadar data: 18 of the 37 credit cards we verify charge no annual fee, and 18 of the 37 offer a 0% introductory APR period (49% on each measure, as of September 23, 2026, on the same statistics page). Gold leaves the no-fee group after year one, and none of these three Delta cards publishes an introductory purchase rate at zero. If the bag waiver and the credits will go unused, the no-annual-fee guide is the off-ramp, and the full credit card ranking shows where Gold's ongoing fee sits in the catalog.
Checked bags are how a light Delta flyer earns the fee back. Benefit terms give the basic cardmember a first checked bag free on Delta flights worldwide, and a second checked bag free on domestic trips within the U.S. 48, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. The reservation needs that cardmember's SkyMiles number, codeshares are excluded, and additional cardmembers do not get the waiver on their own, so a companion on a separate ticket still pays. A passenger who already receives a free bag from Medallion status or the fare does not stack a second waiver.
Gold earns 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases, at restaurants worldwide, and at U.S. supermarkets, then 1 mile per dollar elsewhere, so groceries and dining still beat the base rate. Superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit services are not supermarkets, and a restaurant inside a hotel or casino may code as the host business. Platinum's terms use the same supermarket and restaurant language, so a warehouse-club grocery run is the base rate on both cards.
Platinum wins the companion certificate
A Main Cabin companion ticket is the reason to pay the middle fee, and it does not arrive in year one, so that year has nothing to redeem against the fee. After each renewal the basic cardmember gets one round-trip Delta Main companion ticket with an eligible adult fare on the same flights, and Delta Basic fares are excluded. Routes start in the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands and end in the United States, Mexico, or a named list of Caribbean and Central American destinations in the certificate terms, so a trip outside that map does not qualify. The certificate can cover the flight portion of a Delta Vacations package booked with a Delta Vacations specialist, and both passengers must be ticketed together.
Taxes are not waived, so the companion is not a free seat. Benefit terms cap government-imposed taxes and fees at no more than $80 on a domestic round trip with up to four segments, and no more than $250 on an eligible international round trip. The marketing pages describe that bill as between $22 and $250, so use the terms caps when you test the fee. Checked bag fees on the companion ticket still follow Delta's ordinary rules.
Platinum is the only card of the three that earns 3 miles per dollar on hotels booked directly with the hotel, plus 3 miles per dollar on Delta purchases, which is the earn edge for a hotel-heavy year. Prepaid stays on Delta Stays count as Delta purchases, so they earn the Delta rate and can trigger the stays credit rather than the hotel rate. Only Platinum earns the better hotel rate on the hotel's own website, and Gold and Reserve stay at the base rate on that booking.
Amex's Platinum FAQ says this card does not currently include lounge access, and Delta's comparison table marks Sky Club on Platinum as no longer offered, so the middle fee does not buy a club. A lounge card that is not tied to Delta is a different product: see the travel card guide and the Amex Platinum page.
Reserve wins Sky Club and loses everyday miles
Fifteen Sky Club visits are what the largest fee buys. Terms issue 15 visits per eligible Reserve card at account opening and then on February 1, and unused visits expire on January 31, so a quiet year does not bank them. A visit covers Sky Club or Grab and Go for up to 24 hours on a same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight. Basic Economy is excluded, and a departing flight allows entry only within three hours of departure, or any time on a layover.
Partner flights that Delta does not market or operate cost $50 a visit, and once the 15 visits are used, extra Sky Club entries cost the same while Grab and Go is $25, so past the allotment you are buying a day pass. Unlimited access requires $75,000 of eligible purchases in a calendar year. Fees, interest, gift cards, and person-to-person payments do not count. Once it starts, it lasts the rest of that calendar year, the next calendar year, and through January 31 of the year after.
The basic cardmember also gets four one-time guest passes a year, expiring January 31, with at most two per visit. Additional cardmembers do not get those passes, so extra cards do not grow the guest allotment. Other guests pay the same per-person rate, and children under 2 are free. Centurion Lounge, Sidecar, and Escape Lounge access requires a same-day Delta flight booked on a U.S.-issued American Express card, and up to two guests may come. Effective July 8, 2026, those guests must be on the same flight. Centurion and Sidecar guest fees are $50 per person, or $30 for children ages 2 through 17.
Everyday earn is the weakness. Reserve pays 3 miles per dollar on Delta and 1 mile per dollar on everything else, so restaurants and U.S. supermarkets stay at the base rate while the other two cards pay more there. Put grocery spend on a cash-back card and keep Reserve for Delta tickets. The cash back guide and Blue Cash Preferred vs Everyday vs Savor cover that split. Each additional Reserve card is $175 a year, while an added Platinum card on the same account has no annual fee and is not a second Sky Club membership. Reserve trip-delay coverage can start after 6 hours, up to $500 a trip, while Platinum's version starts after 12 hours.
Credits are monthly caps, not a check
Count only credits that match spending you already do. Delta's personal-card page adds Platinum's published statement-credit caps to $390 a year and Reserve's to $560, and those totals are ceilings rather than cash. A skipped month pays none of that month's credit, and the annual fee is still due.
Gold's benefit terms list three credits that do not arrive as cash. Up to $100 a year on a new prepaid hotel or vacation rental through Delta Stays helps only if you already book that way, and resort fees, cancellations, and Delta Vacations bookings do not qualify.
A $200 Delta eCredit after purchases hit $10,000 in a calendar year expires one year after issuance and cannot pay bags, changes, or upgrades. The limit is one per account per year, so it is a weak reason to pick Gold for a few trips. Up to $10 a month on U.S. rides with Uber, Lyft, Curb, or Alto, capped at $120 a year, waits until enrollment opens 12 months after the account opens, so year one does not include it unless you transferred from Platinum or Reserve, and delivery, bikes, and scooters do not count.
Platinum and Reserve use that same rideshare cap and those same four providers, with enrollment and without Gold's 12-month wait, so the credit can count in the first year. Platinum adds up to $10 a month at qualifying U.S. Resy restaurants, up to $120 a year, and up to $150 a year on Delta Stays. Reserve raises Resy to $20 a month, $240 a year, and Delta Stays to $200. Resy purchases have to be made directly at the restaurant.
Both higher cards also credit Global Entry at $120 every four years on the card pages, or TSA PreCheck up to $85. Delta's comparison table puts the TSA PreCheck credit at every 4.5 years, and Gold does not list it. All three cards add a 20% statement credit on eligible Delta in-flight food and drinks, not on inflight internet.
Welcome offers end November 4, 2026
The public ceilings run through November 4, 2026, on Delta's card page and in its August 27, 2026 news post. They are not a promise that your application will show the top number.
Gold is as high as 80,000 bonus miles plus a statement credit after $3,000 in six months. Platinum is as high as 90,000 bonus miles plus a $300 statement credit after $4,000 in six months. Reserve is two round-trip Delta Comfort or Main certificates plus 50,000 miles after $10,000 in six months, which fits only if that spend was already planned.
Those certificates need a booking at least 21 days ahead, cover Delta-operated flights in the U.S. 48, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and taxes and fees of up to $80 per person apply. They are not the annual Companion Certificate, which still waits until renewal.
Some Amex application pages still show larger totals, including 90,000 miles on Gold, 100,000 on Platinum, and 125,000 on Reserve, but those advertisements ended July 15, 2026. On those older terms, Gold may be blocked if you have or have had Gold, Platinum, or Reserve, while Platinum's terms name Platinum and Reserve, not Gold, and Reserve's terms name only Reserve. Read the blocker list on the offer in front of you before you assume that order still applies. Fees, interest, gift cards, and person-to-person payments do not count toward the spend, and returning purchases to manufacture it can cost the miles.
Status math is a spend target
Headstart is half of Silver, on Amex's own description. Platinum and Reserve each deposit $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars for a qualification year, and Amex's card pages put Silver at $5,000 MQDs, so the deposit stops at halfway. Gold has neither headstart nor a spend boost, which means Gold does not move Medallion status on its own.
Platinum needs $50,000 of spend to earn the other half of Silver, and Reserve needs $25,000, because Reserve credits MQDs faster. If you will not put that spend on the card, the headstart does not finish Silver by itself, and you are paying for a status start you will not complete.
All three cards include TakeOff 15, at least 15% off the mileage portion of a Delta or Delta Connection award booked on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app, so the discount does not pick a winner among the three. Partner flights, Pay with Miles, and later upgrades are excluded, and additional cardmembers are not eligible.
Interest still erases the miles
None of the three is a card to revolve. Application terms list a purchase APR of 19.49% to 28.49% variable, a cash-advance APR of 28.74%, and a penalty APR of 29.99%, and a carried balance can cost more than the welcome miles. Amex dates the variable rates to June 12, 2026 on Gold, June 9, 2026 on Platinum, and June 4, 2026 on Reserve, and says variable APRs will not exceed 29.99%. None of the tables shows a 0% introductory purchase APR, so the welcome spend is never in a free-float window.
A cash advance costs $10 or 5%, whichever is greater, and a late or returned payment can cost up to $40. Interest on unpaid welcome-offer spend can cost more than the miles. The credit card APR report covers revolving costs, and the cards-by-score guide covers profile fit.
Who should hold which
Hold Gold if you check a bag on Delta, you want the first year without an annual fee, and you will use U.S. supermarkets and restaurants. The rideshare credit waits until year two, so leave it out of the year-one math. The flight credit is an eCredit after a five-figure spend, so it should not be the reason you pick the card.
Hold Platinum if you will redeem a Main Cabin companion certificate after every renewal, inside the published map, and you can live without Sky Club. Direct hotel spend is the earn edge. Resy and rideshare credits pay the fee back only when those merchants match spending you already do.
Hold Reserve if you will use Sky Club on Delta trips and you can redeem a companion certificate in First, Premium Select, Comfort, or Main. Keep restaurants and supermarkets off this card, because those categories stay at the base rate. Fifteen visits is the lounge benefit unless the account posts the calendar-year spend that removes the cap. An extra Reserve cardmember is a separate annual fee.
Hold none of them to float a balance. For transferable points at a different fee, read Sapphire Preferred vs Amex Gold.
How we compared
We read Amex's Gold, Platinum, and Reserve card pages, the consumer application terms and benefit terms for each card, the Gold cardmember agreement dated March 31, 2026, Delta's personal American Express card page, and Delta's August 27, 2026 news post on the current welcome offers. The check was September 23, 2026. We did not apply for any card. Nothing on this page is personalized advice for a specific credit file. If a card link pays Financeradar a commission, that payment does not change the ranking on this page (how we make money).
FAQ
Which Delta SkyMiles Amex card is worth it in 2026?
Gold, when the fee has to stay small and you check a bag on Delta. The first year waives the annual fee, and the ongoing charge is the smallest of the three. Platinum fits a Main Cabin companion certificate you will use after renewal. Reserve fits Sky Club, and restaurants and supermarkets stay at the base rate.
How much are the Delta Gold, Platinum, and Reserve annual fees?
The Gold card page lists an introductory annual fee of $0 for the first year, then $150. The Platinum card page lists $350, with no annual fee for additional cards, so a partner on that account does not double the charge. The Reserve card page lists $650, and each additional Reserve card is $175. Those figures were on the issuer pages on September 23, 2026.
What is the Delta SkyMiles welcome offer through November 4, 2026?
Delta's card page lists Gold at as high as 80,000 miles plus a $250 statement credit after $3,000 in six months, Platinum at as high as 90,000 miles plus a $300 statement credit after $4,000 in six months, and Reserve at two Delta Comfort or Main round trips plus 50,000 miles after $10,000 in six months. Your offer can be lower, and you may not be eligible. Older Amex advertisements that ended July 15, 2026 show different mile totals.
Does the Delta Platinum card include Sky Club?
No. Amex's Platinum FAQ says the card does not currently have lounge access, and Delta's comparison table says Sky Club is no longer offered on that card. Reserve includes 15 Sky Club visits a year on a same-day Delta flight, with Basic Economy excluded, and unlimited visits only after $75,000 of eligible purchases in a calendar year.
How do the Platinum and Reserve companion certificates differ?
Both arrive each year after renewal, not in the first year, and both exclude Basic Economy, so the first year has no certificate and a Basic fare voids it. Platinum is a Delta Main ticket, while Reserve is Delta First, Premium Select, Comfort, or Main. Terms cap companion taxes and fees at no more than $80 on a domestic round trip with up to four segments, and the international cap is higher.
Do these Delta cards charge a foreign transaction fee or offer 0% APR?
None of the three charges a foreign transaction fee, and none publishes a 0% introductory purchase APR. The purchase APR on the application terms is 19.49% to 28.49% variable, dated June 2026, with a penalty APR of 29.99%. Carrying the welcome-offer balance can cost more than the miles.
Are Delta SkyMiles from these cards Membership Rewards points?
No, these miles are not Membership Rewards points. Eligible miles post to the basic cardmember's Delta SkyMiles account, on Amex's benefit terms, and there is no transfer-out to the Membership Rewards partner list. TakeOff 15, a discount of at least 15% on the mileage portion of a Delta award, applies only to Delta and Delta Connection flights booked on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app.
