How Direct-Deposit APY Requirements Really Work

The best savings and hybrid APYs are gated behind a monthly deposit. Here is what each top account actually requires, and which hoop is easiest to keep hitting.

The headline APY on a savings account is a promise with fine print, and the fine print is almost always a monthly deposit you have to keep making. Miss the hoop and your 4% quietly drops to a rate that barely beats your old bank. Before you chase a number, it is worth knowing exactly what each account asks of you every single month, because the requirements are not the same and one of them is far easier to hit than the others.

What "direct deposit" actually means

Banks use the phrase "direct deposit" to mean two very different things, and the gap between them decides whether you keep the top rate.

The strict version is a real ACH credit from an employer or a government agency (payroll, Social Security, a pension). A one-off transfer you push from another bank often does not count, because the transaction carries a different ACH code. Accounts built around a paycheck tend to use this definition.

The loose version is a dollar threshold from any source. The account does not care who sends the money, only that a qualifying deposit of at least $X lands in the statement period. That distinction matters most if you are self-employed, paid irregularly, or moving money in from a brokerage or another bank rather than a W-2 employer.

Read which one applies before you open anything. The rate is identical on paper; the effort to keep it is not.

The five accounts, side by side

The three flavors of hoop

Once you line the accounts up, the requirements sort into three buckets.

True direct deposit, no dollar floor stated. Axos ONE and SoFi Checking & Savings both tie their rate to a qualifying direct deposit rather than a published minimum. Axos ONE stretches its top rate across a very large balance, up to $500k, which makes it the one to beat if you are parking a serious sum. SoFi's savings rate starts at 3.10% APY with direct deposit and steps up to 3.80% boosted, and it lives inside a broader app if you want checking, savings, and the rest in one place.

Dollar threshold, direct deposit required. Current Savings Pods pays 4.00% APY but wants a genuine direct deposit of $200 or more each month, and the top rate only covers the first $6,000 you keep in Pods. That cap makes it an emergency-fund or sinking-fund account, not a home for a large balance.

Dollar threshold, any deposit counts. LendingClub LevelUp Savings is the outlier and, for many people, the friendliest. It pays 4.00% APY in any month you deposit $250 or more, and it does not cap the balance that earns it. The deposit does not have to be a payroll ACH, which is the escape hatch for anyone without a traditional paycheck.

Then there is the reward-not-rate case. Upgrade Rewards Checking Preferred is fee-free checking that pays 2% back in five everyday categories, but only if $1,000 a month lands by direct deposit. That is a spending reward, not a savings yield, so judge it on how much you actually spend in those categories, not against an APY.

Matching the hoop to your paycheck

Pick the requirement you will clear on autopilot, because a rate you lose in month two is worth nothing.

If you have a steady W-2 paycheck, the direct-deposit accounts are easy money; route the whole check or split it, whatever the bank accepts as qualifying. If your income is lumpy or comes from a brokerage, freelance clients, or transfers, the "any deposit of $250" model at LevelUp sidesteps the payroll requirement entirely. If you want the rate to cover a big balance, the cap is the deciding factor: $500k at Axos ONE dwarfs the $6,000 ceiling at Current. And set a calendar reminder for the deposit date. Most of these rules reset every statement cycle, so one skipped month can cost you the rate on your whole balance for that period.

Bottom line

If your goal is the highest yield on the most money with the least fuss, LendingClub LevelUp Savings is the cleanest deal: 4.00% APY, no balance cap, and any $250 deposit qualifies, no employer ACH needed. Move a large balance and want the top rate to cover all of it, and Axos ONE up to $500k is the one to weigh. Keep a modest emergency fund and already use direct deposit, and Current Savings Pods works within its $6,000 cap. Choose the hoop you will never miss, not the biggest number.

FAQ

Does a transfer from my other bank count as direct deposit?
Often no. Accounts that require "direct deposit" usually mean an ACH payroll or government credit. LevelUp is the exception here, since it counts any deposit of $250 or more, from any source.

What happens if I miss the deposit one month?
Most of these rates reset each statement cycle, so a missed month typically drops you to the account's base rate for that period. You generally requalify by resuming the deposit the next month.

Is the top APY the whole balance or just part of it?
It depends on the cap. Current's 4.00% APY applies to up to $6,000 in Pods, while LevelUp is uncapped and Axos ONE covers up to $500k. Balances above a cap earn a lower rate.

Is Upgrade Rewards Checking Preferred a savings account?
No. It is fee-free checking that pays 2% back in five everyday categories when $1,000 a month arrives by direct deposit. Treat it as a spending reward, not a yield.

Can I use one paycheck to qualify at multiple banks?
Only if you split the direct deposit and each bank's threshold is met by its share. Otherwise, a single small deposit may satisfy a dollar-threshold account like LevelUp but not a full-paycheck requirement elsewhere.
