Is the Amex Gold Card Worth It in 2026
Gold clears a $325 fee only when the credits you will use cover it. All four cap at $424. Skip Dunkin and the other three still clear the fee. Skip two larger credits and they do not.
The American Express Gold Card clears its fee only when the credits you will use cover it. As of September 23, 2026, American Express lists the annual fee at $325, and the four credits cap at $424 if you use every one. Skip Dunkin and the other three still clear that fee. Skip two larger credits and they do not.
FinanceRadar data: the average annual fee across the 37 credit cards we verify is $200, 18 of those 37 charge no annual fee (49%), and the highest published fee in that set is $895, as of September 23, 2026 (credit card statistics). Gold sits above that average, so an unused credit costs more here than on a typical card in that set. If these credits will go unused, the no-annual-fee guide is the comparison, and the full ranking shows where this fee sits.
The useful question is which credits match spending you already do, on the calendar Amex sets, because a missed month is not paid later. Someone who already uses the named restaurants, Uber, and Resy can skip Dunkin and still clear the fee. Someone who would open those apps only to chase a credit should leave the card.
The four credits, and what a skip removes
Hitting the cap is the only version of "using" a credit that belongs in the fee math. Amex prints each benefit as "up to" a limit, for a month or a half-year, and a period you miss is not added to the next one, so two quiet months shrink what you can put against the fee. Figures below are from the Gold card page and the member application terms, checked September 23, 2026.
| Credit | Annual cap | How it arrives | If you skip a period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining partners | $120 | Up to $10 in a month, after enrollment | That month is not paid later |
| Uber Cash | $120 | $10 a month, U.S. rides and orders | Unused balance expires at month-end |
| Resy | $100 | Up to $50 from January through June, and up to $50 from July through December | An unused half does not raise the next cap |
| Dunkin | $84 | Up to $7 in a month at U.S. Dunkin locations, after enrollment | A skipped month is not added later |
Add those four caps and you get the ceiling in the opening. That figure is a sum of limits, not a check Amex mails in January. Dining, Resy, and Dunkin pay nothing until you enroll, and Uber Cash requires the Gold Card saved in the Uber account, Uber Cash turned on, and an American Express card selected at checkout. Skip enrollment, or pay Uber with another card, and that month's credit is zero.
The dining partners on the card page are Grubhub (including the ordering app Amex pairs with it), Buffalo Wild Wings, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wonder, at participating United States locations. The member application terms name a different set: Grubhub (including that paired ordering app), The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys. Count a partner only if the offer you accept names it, since a name that appears only on the marketing page is not a credit.
The same terms knock out purchases that feel eligible. A restaurant inside a hotel, a gift card, an electronic wallet, or a mobile card reader can mean no dining credit, so a hotel diner or a wallet user should treat that credit as zero. The merchant's processing date decides which month gets it, and posting can take up to 8 weeks, which means a meal late in the month can miss the cap you counted on.
Uber Cash expires at 11:59 pm Hawaii Standard Time on the last day of the month, does not roll, and has to be added inside Uber rather than through Apple Pay or PayPal. It covers United States rides and orders on one Uber account. Dunkin excludes airport and gas-station locations, delivery apps, and gift cards, so leave that cap out when those are your only Dunkin stops.
Which skips still clear the fee
Three of the four caps are enough, and two of the larger ones are not. The yes rows below assume you hit each listed cap in full, and a no means you still owe the fee.
| Credits you actually capture | Sum of those caps | Clears the annual fee? |
|---|---|---|
| Dining, Uber Cash, Resy, and Dunkin | $424 | Yes, before any points |
| Dining, Uber Cash, and both Resy halves | $340 | Yes, before any points |
| Dining, Uber Cash, and one Resy half | $290 | No |
| Dining and Uber Cash | $240 | No |
| Dining and Resy | $220 | No |
| Resy and Dunkin | $184 | No |
| Dunkin alone | $84 | No |
Skip Dunkin and the other three caps still clear the fee, with a thin margin, before points. That only works if dining posts every month, Uber Cash is spent every month, and both Resy halves are used. Two missed dining months remove $20 from that three-credit total, and the total then sits under the fee. One Resy half instead of two is the $290 row, which does not clear it.
Points do not close a "no" row by themselves. The member terms say point value depends on how you redeem, so this page does not convert points into cents. The Hotel Collection credit is not in the table either: it is a property credit at more than 1,300 hotels on a two-night stay booked through American Express Travel, applied at the hotel, and a stay on the hotel's own site does not trigger it. Leave it out of the fee math unless that two-night trip is already planned.
Where 4X helps, and where it drops to 1X
Restaurants and United States supermarkets are the earn rates that can close a small gap, and both have a cap and a list of places that do not count. A shortfall stays uncovered, because Amex does not publish a dollar value for a point. On the card page, checked the same day, the rates are:
| Purchase | Rate on the card page | Limit that changes the rate |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants worldwide | 4X, then 1X | First $50,000 in a calendar year |
| U.S. supermarkets | 4X, then 1X | First $25,000 in a calendar year |
| Flights booked with the airline or through Amex Travel | 3X | Charter flights and private jets are excluded in the benefit terms |
| Prepaid hotels through Amex Travel | 5X on the card page | Member terms describe this purchase as 2 points per dollar |
| Prepaid car rentals and cruises through Amex Travel | 2X | Non-prepaid hotels and rentals are excluded |
| Other eligible purchases | 1X | The base rate once a bonus cap is passed |
The hotel line is a conflict between two Amex pages, so do not budget the card-page hotel rate until the offer you accept prints it. Flights, restaurants, supermarkets, and the car and cruise rate match on both pages. Past either food cap, that category earns the base rate.
A supermarket trip can earn the base rate even when the store sells groceries. The member terms exclude superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery from that bonus, and they withhold the restaurant bonus in several places, including bars, bakeries, caterers, and restaurants inside hotels, casinos, or event venues. A merchant category code decides, and a digital wallet can keep a purchase at the base rate. A warehouse club or a superstore never starts that bonus.
Amex does not publish what a point is worth, so bonus points are not a dollar offset until you redeem them. Restaurant earning is worldwide, up to the annual cap, and the four credits are United States benefits. Eating abroad can pile up 4X and still offset none of the fee.
The fee can accrue interest
Pay Over Time starts on. The member terms say the feature is set to active at account opening, and eligible charges, including the annual fee, are added to a balance that can carry interest up to a Pay Over Time Limit Amex assigns. You can switch the setting to inactive, but until you do, a payment a few days late can put interest on the fee the credits were meant to offset.
The same terms list a Pay Over Time APR of 19.49% to 28.49% variable, based on creditworthiness, accurate as of April 24, 2026. Variable APRs will not exceed 29.99%. The penalty APR is 29.99% and can apply for at least six months if you miss a minimum payment or a payment is returned.
The cardmember agreement, as of March 31, 2026, expresses the purchase range as the Prime Rate plus 12.74 to 21.74 percentage points. There is no 0% introductory rate in those tables. Interest on a leftover balance can erase a thin credit surplus. See the credit card APR report for what revolving costs on the cards we track.
You avoid interest on charges added to a Pay Over Time balance only if you pay the Account Total New Balance by the due date each month. Miss that and interest runs from the transaction date. The payment rule behind Gold's Pay Over Time option is in charge card vs credit card.
The agreement also allows a late fee and a returned-payment fee of up to $40 each. Plan It, the installment option, adds a monthly plan fee of up to 1.33% on qualifying purchases of at least $100. If a credit posts against a charge sitting in Pay Over Time, the terms say the statement credit may land on the Pay In Full balance instead, leaving the revolving portion untouched.
Closing has a 30-day window. The March 31, 2026 agreement refunds the annual fee if you call or write to close within 30 days after the closing date of the statement that shows the fee. After that the fee is non-refundable, and a Massachusetts billing address does not get that window. Close inside it if the first statement shows credits you will not capture.
The card has no preset spending limit, but Amex can still assign one, and a declined charge earns neither points nor a credit, so a refused purchase never fills the monthly cap.
Who it fits, and who should leave it
Keep Gold if restaurants that code as restaurants, and United States supermarkets that are not superstores or warehouse clubs, are already large lines, and you will capture dining, Uber Cash, and both Resy halves without new errands. Dunkin can be a zero in that picture.
Leave it if you would use one brand and ignore the rest, if groceries are a warehouse club or a superstore (the benefit terms pay the base rate there), or if you will carry a balance while Pay Over Time is active. Any one of those leaves the fee uncovered or turns a thin surplus into interest. Leave it if you wanted lounge access: the Gold FAQ says the card does not currently have it, and lounges are covered in the travel card guide. If the annual fee is the sticking point, the Apple Card review shows what a card with no fee at all returns on the same spending.
For food rewards without this monthly calendar, Capital One Savor lists no annual fee and unlimited 3% at grocery stores (Walmart and Target excluded), on dining, entertainment, and streaming, on its card page as of September 23, 2026. Savor fits readers who want those rewards without enrollment or an annual fee. Chase Sapphire Preferred lists a $95 annual fee the same day, with 3x on dining, on its card page. Preferred fits readers who will pay a smaller fee and skip this credit calendar. For a lower-fee Amex card with a CLEAR Plus credit, read the Amex Green Card fee math, which weighs a $150 fee against a $219 CLEAR membership.
Compare them in Sapphire Preferred versus Gold and the grocery cash-back comparison. Approval is Amex's decision. The cards-by-score guide and the cash back guide cover the wider set.
The welcome offer is not a fixed public number
Do not underwrite the fee with a bonus you have not been shown. On September 23, 2026, the public Gold card page tells you to apply and find out your welcome offer. It does not print a point total or a spend threshold.
The member application terms, the page for people who already have an American Express card, show a specific offer: 60,000 Membership Rewards points after eligible purchases reach $6,000 in the first six months. Your public offer can differ from that member-page figure. Count only the number Amex shows before you accept.
You may not be eligible if you have or have had Gold, Premier Rewards Gold, or a consumer, Schwab, or Morgan Stanley Platinum card. Amex says it will tell you before processing the application.
Gift cards, fees, and person-to-person payments do not count toward the spend. Points post 8 to 12 weeks later, and returned purchases made to hit the threshold can cost you the points. A bonus you have not been shown does not make a skipped credit harmless.
How we checked
We read Amex's Gold card page, the member application terms for the consumer Gold Card, and the cardmember agreement dated March 31, 2026, plus the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Savor card pages. The check was September 23, 2026. We did not apply for the card. This is general information, not personalized financial advice. FAQ
Is the Amex Gold worth it if I do not use every credit?
It is worth the fee when the credits you will actually capture cover it. As of September 23, 2026, Amex lists the annual fee at $325, and the four credits cap at $424 only if each one is used in full.
Dining, Uber Cash, and both Resy halves still clear the fee if you skip Dunkin, so keep the card on that path. Dining and Uber Cash alone do not, and neither does a single credit, so leave the card if that is all you will capture. Amex does not publish a cent value for Membership Rewards points, so points are not a substitute for a credit you will not use.
What is the Amex Gold annual fee in 2026?
The Gold card page lists $325 for the basic card, checked September 23, 2026. The March 31, 2026 cardmember agreement shows the same fee. The first five Additional Cards have no annual fee, and each card from the sixth onward is $35, without raising the account-level credit caps. The fee is refundable only if you close within 30 days after the closing date of the statement that shows it, and that 30-day policy does not apply when the billing address is in Massachusetts.
What credits does the Amex Gold Card include?
The card page lists up to $120 a year at named dining partners, $120 in Uber Cash, $100 at United States Resy restaurants, and $84 at United States Dunkin. Dining and Uber Cash arrive as $10 a month. Resy is split into two halves of up to $50. Dunkin is up to $7 a month.
Dining, Resy, and Dunkin require enrollment, and unused Uber Cash expires at the end of the month, so a credit noticed in December cannot refill a skipped month. The member application terms name Goldbelly and Wine.com among the dining partners, while the card page names Buffalo Wild Wings and Wonder, so the terms on your offer control the list.
Does Amex publish a Gold Card welcome offer?
The public card page does not print a fixed amount. It says to apply and find out the offer.
The member application terms show 60,000 Membership Rewards points once eligible purchases reach $6,000 in the first six months, and that figure is the offer on that page, not a promise that every applicant will see it. You may not qualify if you have or have had Gold, Premier Rewards Gold, or a consumer, Schwab, or Morgan Stanley Platinum card. Without that bonus, the fee decision is the credits alone.
What APR does the Amex Gold Card charge?
The member application terms list a Pay Over Time APR of 19.49% to 28.49% variable, accurate as of April 24, 2026, with a penalty APR of 29.99%. The March 31, 2026 agreement writes the purchase range as the Prime Rate plus 12.74 to 21.74 percentage points, and variable APRs will not exceed 29.99%. Pay Over Time is active at opening, so the annual fee can accrue interest unless you pay the statement's total new balance by the due date. There is no 0% introductory APR in those disclosures, so the first year does not float the fee.
Does the Amex Gold Card include lounge access?
No. The Gold card FAQ says the card does not currently have lounge access, so a reader paying for lounges is on the wrong card. Restaurant earning can still be the worldwide restaurant bonus at merchants that code as restaurants, up to the annual cap, and that rate is not a lounge benefit. Cards built around lounges are a separate choice, covered in the travel card guide.
Is this Amex Gold review personal financial advice?
No. It is general information about published fees, credits, and rates, checked on American Express, Chase, and Capital One pages on September 23, 2026. Your welcome offer, your APR inside the published range, and whether a store codes as a supermarket or a restaurant are decided by the issuer and the merchant, not by this article.
