Venmo, Cash App, PayPal and Zelle Fees Compared in 2026

Instant cash-outs cost 1.75% on Venmo and PayPal and 0.5% to 2.5% on Cash App. This page compares all four services on one $200 transfer, including a card send.

Short answer: a standard transfer to your bank is free on Venmo, PayPal and Cash App, and the instant option is where the fee sits. On a $200 transfer, instant costs $3.50 on Venmo and PayPal and between $1.00 and $5.00 on Cash App. Zelle charges nothing itself, though your bank may. Paying a person from a bank account or balance costs nothing on Venmo, PayPal or Cash App.

Someone searching for Venmo fees usually has one of two questions. Either they want to know what it costs to pay a person, or they want money out of the app and into a bank account. Paying from a bank account or balance is free on Venmo, PayPal and Cash App and typically free on Zelle, so the real cost sits with cashing out and with paying by card. This page separates those costs and runs one scenario across all four services.

Our analysis: every figure below is printed on a service's own fee page, help center or guide, read on October 10, 2026, or calculated from those figures with the arithmetic shown. You can rerun the sums on your own amount.

The fees side by side

The table sorts the four services by their lowest instant fee on one transfer. Zelle comes first because it charges nothing itself, although a bank can still charge.

ServiceStandard transfer to bankInstant transfer to bankInstant fee on $200Send from bank or balanceSend by credit card
ZelleNot a cash-out: money moves between bank accountsTypically no fee from Zelle; your bank sets its own$0 from ZelleTypically no feeNo card option listed
Cash AppFree, usually 1 to 3 business days0.5% to 2.5%, 25 cents to $1 minimum, $75 maximum$1.00 to $5.00Free from balance, bank or debit card3%
VenmoFree, 1 to 3 business days1.75%, $0.25 minimum, $25 maximum$3.50Free from balance, debit card or bank3.00%
PayPalNo fee for USD1.75%, $0.25 minimum, $25 maximum$3.50No fee from balance or bank2.90% plus $0.30 ($6.10)

Cash App's newest guide gives a top instant rate of 1.75%, not 2.5%, so the Cash App row shows the full published range. The section on Cash App's two rates explains that gap.

What one transfer costs

The instant fee is a percentage with a floor and a ceiling. On Venmo and PayPal, 1.75% of $200 is $3.50. That is above the 25-cent floor and below the ceiling, so the percentage sets the price. Cash App's published range of 0.5% to 2.5% produces $1.00 at the bottom and $5.00 at the top on the same amount.

The standard option costs nothing on any of the three apps, so the difference is time. Venmo says its instant transfers typically arrive within 30 minutes, while its standard transfers typically arrive within one to three business days. Cash App's standard transfers usually arrive in the same window. For a payment due today, the fee buys the day back. For rent due next week, the standard option keeps the whole amount in your account.

Paying a person by card is the costlier move in this table. On the same amount, a card payment costs $6.00 on Venmo and Cash App and $6.10 on PayPal. That is more than the instant cash-out on Venmo or PayPal, and the card fee applies to every dollar you send. The bank or balance route is the default for paying people back, and the card route is for a payment you cannot make any other way.

Zelle works differently because there is no cash-out step. Money moves between enrolled bank accounts, and Zelle's help center says it typically reaches an enrolled recipient within minutes. The cost depends on the bank at each end, which makes the answer for Zelle a check of your own bank rather than a rate.

Where the answer changes

Four thresholds decide which fee you pay, and none of them shows on the front page of a fee schedule.

The first is the floor. Venmo and PayPal charge at least 25 cents on an instant transfer, and that minimum takes over below $14.29, which is 0.25 divided by 0.0175. A $10 instant transfer pays 25 cents, or 2.5% of the amount, so small cash-outs cost proportionally more.

The second is the ceiling. Above $1,428.57, the 1.75% fee would exceed the cap, so Venmo and PayPal hold it there. From that point the fee no longer grows with the amount, and a large cash-out costs proportionally less than a small one. For the speed trade-offs of cash advance apps, which are a different product, see best cash advance apps.

The third is Cash App's $75 ceiling, printed in its help article and terms. It matters only at the top of its range: at 2.5%, the ceiling starts to bind at $3,000. Its May 2026 guide gives a top rate of 1.75% with no ceiling at all, so a reader who relies on that guide sees no cap.

The fourth threshold is for card sends, and it sits at $300. PayPal charges 2.90% plus 30 cents, while Venmo charges 3.00%. At $300 the two cost the same. Below that, Venmo is cheaper, and above it PayPal is cheaper. At $200, Venmo's $6.00 undercuts PayPal's $6.10 by 10 cents.

Cash App's two published rates

Cash App is the one service where its own pages disagree, and the disagreement changes the answer. Its help article on cash-out speed and its terms of service both state an instant fee of 0.5% to 2.5%, with a minimum between 25 cents and $1 and a maximum of $75. The terms carry an effective date of February 7, 2024. The help article describes instant transfers arriving on a linked debit card.

Cash App's send and receive guide, dated May 1, 2026, gives a rate of 0.5% to 1.75% for instant transfers to your bank, with a 25-cent minimum and no stated maximum. The guide is the newer document, but the two pages describe the instant service differently, as a debit card in one and a bank account in the other.

Cash App's own pages disagree, so this page shows the full range. The answer for an instant transfer of that same amount is $1.00 to $5.00, and the table uses that range. Cash App's help article also says the fee is displayed before you complete a transaction. That screen shows the figure that applies to your transfer, and it is the check to make before you confirm a large amount.

Venmo's date line

Venmo's legal fee page carries an "accurate as of June 27, 2024" line. That line sits beside its card costs, not beside the transfer fees, and the help center's instant transfer FAQ carries no date at all. The instant and standard figures match across Venmo's fee schedule and its help center, and we read them on October 10, 2026. Even so, a 2024 date on the same site is a reason to confirm the number in the app before a large transfer.

Venmo also says that from November 4, 2026, its debit card will charge a foreign transaction fee on purchases and ATM withdrawals outside the United States. That affects spending abroad, not the transfers compared here.

Zelle is free on Zelle's side

Zelle's help center says consumers typically pay nothing to send or receive money with Zelle, and it advises confirming that your bank charges nothing for Zelle. Its footnote reports that 99.40% of consumer checking and savings accounts linked to Zelle do not charge a fee to send, receive or request money. That figure comes from a Q1 2026 survey of financial institutions offering Zelle.

The remaining share is where a surprise fee can sit, and your bank decides which group your account falls into. Zelle's help center also requires both people to hold an eligible checking or savings account, and it lists no card option. That is why Zelle's card cell in the table reads "No card option listed". If you are choosing the account that will receive these transfers, checking account bonuses lists the current offers.

Which fee applies to which move

Paying a friend from a bank account or balance costs nothing on Venmo, PayPal or Cash App, and Zelle typically costs nothing either. Venmo's fee schedule lists $0.00 for a payment from a Venmo balance, debit card or bank account. PayPal says there is no fee from a PayPal balance or a bank account. Cash App's guide lists sending from its balance, a bank account or a debit card as free.

Paying by credit card costs 3.00% on Venmo, 3% on Cash App, and 2.90% plus 30 cents on PayPal. Zelle lists no card route. Among the services that accept one, the card is the costliest way to pay a person, so it is the first thing to avoid when the money is already in a bank account.

Standard transfers to your bank cost nothing on Venmo, PayPal or Cash App. Venmo and Cash App say standard transfers typically arrive within one to three business days. PayPal lists no fee for a standard USD withdrawal, and this page does not state an arrival time for PayPal.

The instant fee pays for speed. On Venmo, instant transfers typically arrive within 30 minutes, and Venmo and PayPal both charge 1.75%, within the minimum and maximum shown in the table. On Cash App it is 0.5% to 2.5% by the help article, or up to 1.75% by the guide. Zelle's money typically reaches an enrolled recipient within minutes, and its fee depends on the banks involved.

The decision comes down to time. If the money can wait one to three business days, the standard option keeps the whole amount. If it cannot, the instant fee is the price of speed, and on Venmo or PayPal, above the 25-cent floor, it works out to 1.75 cents for every dollar moved. For choosing where that money should sit, see where to put cash in 2026.

Checks before a large transfer

Three checks cover most surprises. First, read the amount the app displays before you confirm, because Cash App says its fee appears at that stage and its published range is wide. Second, check the arrival time the app promises. A standard transfer that lands in three business days works for rent but not for a bill due today. Third, if you plan to pay with a credit card, compare the 3% card fee with a bank transfer for the same amount, since the card fee applies to every dollar you send.

A card send is not a cash advance, and the two cost different amounts. The cash advance rules for credit cards are in credit card cash advance fees, and mixing the two up is an easy mistake when a card is the only money you have on hand.

How we checked

We read the fee pages on October 10, 2026. For Venmo, we read its fee schedule, its legal fee page, and its help articles on instant transfers and standard transfers. For PayPal, we read its US consumer fees page, which says it was last updated on May 19, 2026. For Cash App, we read its cash-out speed help article, its terms of service, effective February 7, 2024, and its send and receive guide, dated May 1, 2026. For Zelle, we read its help center. Our verification method is on how we rate.

Every figure on this page is either printed on one of those pages or calculated from them, with the arithmetic shown. We used no third-party guide for any number. Where a page carries no date, we say so.
