Varo Bank Review 2026: Savings APY, Advance Fees and ATM Costs

Varo's savings tiers, checking and ATM fees, Varo Advance fee table and FDIC coverage, with who should open an account and who should skip it.

Varo pays up to 3.75% APY on the first $5,000 of savings in the month after a customer receives $800 or more in direct deposits and ends the month with a positive balance in all Varo accounts, according to the savings page, which prints its APY as accurate as of October 5, 2026. Balances above that cap earn a lower rate. Checking carries no monthly, maintenance, overdraft or minimum balance fees, but out-of-network ATM use adds a per-withdrawal charge.

Financeradar data: 10 of the 14 accounts in its main checking list charge no monthly fee at all (checking account comparison). 12 of the 14 were re-read in the last 14 days, the newest on October 25, 2026.

The savings tiers and the deposit test

The top rate is a monthly test, not a standing rate. The test counts electronic deposits of paychecks, pensions and government benefits. It excludes tax refunds, stimulus payments, Venmo or Varo to Anyone transfers, and funds deposited with a Varo routing number. The window runs from the first calendar day of the month to 4:25 p.m. MT on the last business day, and every Varo account must end the month with a positive balance.

Meeting the test in one month sets the rate for the next, so a month that misses it leaves the following month without the top rate. The footnote counts electronic paycheck, pension and benefit deposits only “to the extent that can be identified,” and it does not say how a split paycheck is counted. The page also says rates are subject to change at any time.

Take a $10,000 balance with the test met every month. The top tier and the 1.00% rate on the rest come to about $238 a year before compounding ($187.50 plus $50). Ally's high-yield savings page prints 3.2% APY, dated October 23, 2026 in its HTML and October 25, 2026 in its U.S. text view, which would pay $320 on the same balance before compounding. At the $5,000 cap, the Varo tier pays $187.50 against $160 at Ally's 3.2% rate, so Varo pays more up to a balance of about $6,250 and less above it (before compounding).

How the top rate has moved

Captures from February 21 and July 19, 2024 print 5.00% APY on the first tier after at least $1,000 in direct deposits each month, with 3.00% on the rest. Captures from March 4 and October 11, 2025 print 5.00% APY on up to $5,000 after at least $1,000 in direct deposits, with 2.50% on the rest. Captures from February 15 and June 27, 2026 print 5.00% on the first tier with direct deposits totaling $1,000 or more.

The current page, accurate as of October 5, 2026, prints 3.75% with an $800 threshold. The threshold got easier, but the top rate fell 1.25 points and the rate above the cap fell from 2.50% to 1.00%. Check the current page before opening, because the terms changed between those captures.

Checking, ATMs and cash

The bank account page says Varo charges no minimum balance, maintenance, overdraft or account fees. Its footnote says a transaction is declined when funds are short, and that a negative balance can arise when an approved amount settles higher than the authorization, with no overdraft fee in that case.

ATM access is where the cost shows up. Allpoint ATMs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico cost $0 at more than 40,000 machines. Any other ATM, including international ones, costs $3.50 a withdrawal plus any third-party fee. The fee disclosure adds a $2.50 charge for over-the-counter cash withdrawals.

Cash deposits follow a similar split. The bank page says deposits at stand-alone CVS locations with a cashier, except those in hospitals, on military bases or in Target, run from $20 to $500 a deposit. The fee disclosure says Varo assesses no fee for cash deposits, but participating retailers in the Green Dot network, which Varo says includes Walmart, Walgreens and Kroger, may charge up to $5.95 a transaction.

Mobile check deposits carry their own limits. The footnote says deposit limits depend on how long the account has been open and on prior activity, so a newer account can see lower limits.

Varo also compares itself with big-bank checking. Its no-hidden-fee page, dated May 24, 2023, lists monthly fees of $12 at Bank of America Advantage Checking and Chase Total Checking, and $10 at Wells Fargo Everyday Checking, each waivable under stated conditions. Varo cites its own internal research for those figures.

Varo Advance: fees by amount

Varo Advance offers advances up to $250 at first and up to $700 over time, as direct deposits and on-time repayments build. The cash advance page gives an average loan of $195, one flat fee per advance and no interest. Repayment runs over 30 days, and a customer can set an automatic payment on any date from 15 to 30 days after the advance.

The fee table has two columns for each advance amount: one for customers with $800 in deposits to Varo this month or last, and one for customers without that amount (and, in some cases, none in each of the last three months). Footnote 2 of the disclosure counts all deposits to a Varo Bank account except loan proceeds and transfers from other Varo accounts, not only direct deposits. Military personnel who qualify as covered borrowers under 32 C.F.R. 232.3(g) when they open their account pay no Varo Advance fees, per footnote 1.

AdvanceWith the deposit testWithout the deposit test
$20$1.60$4
$50$4$10
$75$6$15
$100$8$20
$150$12$30
$200$16$40
$250$20$50
$300$24$60
$400$32$80
$500$40$100
$600$48Not available
$700$56Not available

The $500 row shows the gap. With the test met, a $500 advance costs $40, or 8% of the amount. Without it, the same advance costs $100, or 20%. Above that amount, the disclosure prints "Not available" for customers without the test, so the $600 and $700 tiers depend on it.

The cash advance page lists the conditions: an active Varo account that is not overdrawn, a linked account that receives qualifying direct deposits or deposits set up with Varo, all earlier advances repaid on time, and no outstanding advance. Approval depends on consumer reports and account activity, and the page says negative repayment history may impact credit.

The Varo Line of Credit is a separate product. Its limits run from $600 to $2,000, with a flat fee of $60 to $500 by amount ($36 to $400 for Military Lending Act covered borrowers), no interest, one advance at a time and approval subject to credit.

Early pay, cashback and deposit insurance

Early direct deposit gives access to a paycheck on the day Varo receives it, which the page says is typically up to two days before the scheduled pay date. The page says Varo works with virtually all employers that offer direct deposit, and that setup takes less than two minutes with no impact on a credit score.

Cashback is a separate feature. Select purchases with the Varo debit or Believe card earn cashback, capped at $750 a calendar month, according to the footnote.

Deposit insurance appears on the savings page and the bank account page: deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000. The bank page says Varo is a nationally chartered online bank, so the money sits directly with Varo. The footer reads Member FDIC, and the legal name in the footer is Varo Bank, N.A.

What users report

The U.S. App Store listing for Varo Bank shows 4.9 out of 5 from about 234,000 ratings (the listing displays 234K; the U.S. lookup data read October 25, 2026 gives 233,535) (App Store listing). The newest one-star U.S. reviews, dated October 5 to 23, 2026, mention a card flagged for fraud review, a check hold and an app update that some phones cannot install. One, dated October 13, 2026, says the app "says it’s gonna take 8 days for the funds to be available" after a check deposit.

Trustpilot shows Varo with a TrustScore of 4.0 from 5,934 reviews, and the newest review it prints is dated October 24, 2026 (Trustpilot). Its AI summary of recent reviews praises "fast direct payments days early" and cites "unpredictable mobile check deposit delays and strict limitations placed on cash advance or loan features."

On Hacker News, a commenter who needed a wire for a home purchase wrote on September 14, 2022 (UTC) that Varo "promised they could do it, but on the day I needed it they refused" (comment). The same comment adds that, apart from that transaction, "they've been great!" That is a single account from 2022.

Who should open it and who should skip it

Open a Varo account if the paycheck already lands there, the deposit test is realistic every month, and the balance stays near the cap. In that case the top rate, early pay and a checking account with no monthly fee are the strongest parts of the offer.

Skip it if savings will sit above about $6,250. Above the cap the rate is 1.00%, and Ally's savings page prints 3.2% APY, dated October 23, 2026 in its HTML, with no monthly maintenance fees or minimum balance requirements. The Ally review covers Ally's terms in detail.

Skip it too if you use out-of-network ATMs often, since each out-of-network withdrawal costs $3.50 plus any third-party fee. Skip it if Varo Advance would be your fallback for emergencies, because the fee climbs without the deposit test and the page warns that negative repayment history may impact credit.

The savings page, accurate as of October 5, 2026, prints up to 3.75% APY on the first $5,000 after the deposit test and a lower rate above that. Rates are subject to change at any time.

How much does Varo Advance cost?

The fee rises with the advance amount and is lower for customers with $800 in deposits to Varo this month or last. The fee table above lists each tier.

Is Varo insured by the FDIC?

The savings page says deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000, and the footer reads Member FDIC.

Where can I deposit cash?

Varo charges no fee for cash deposits at stand-alone CVS locations with a cashier. Participating retailers may charge up to $5.95 a transaction.
