Ally Bank Review 2026: Checking, Savings, CDs and Money Market Rates and Fees

Rates, fees, the savings withdrawal cap, ATM reimbursement and cash limits for Ally's savings, Spending, money market and CD accounts, read on Ally's own pages on October 20, 2026.

As of Oct 19, 2026, Ally pays 3.10% APY on savings and money market, 0.10% to 0.25% on checking and 2.80% to 4.40% on High Yield CDs. No account charges a monthly fee, and checking reimburses up to $10 a cycle of other ATMs' fees. The catch: 10 limited savings withdrawals per cycle and no cash at ATMs.

Financeradar data: the 50 high-yield savings accounts we track with a published APY average 3.21% (read between Aug 11 and Oct 17, 2026), so Ally's savings rate is 0.11 points below that average and 1.40 points below the highest APY on file, 4.50%. Our 15 tracked CDs average 4.24% (read between Sep 17 and Oct 19, 2026), and three of Ally's ten priced CD terms pay more than that.

Ally Bank at a glance: rates, fees and catches

Ally's own pages, read on Oct 20, 2026, print every rate below as correct as of Oct 20, 2026. Savings, money market and each CD term showed a single APY across Ally's balance tiers that day, so one figure per row is enough.

Is Ally Bank legit and FDIC insured?

Ally Bank is an FDIC-insured bank. The FDIC's institution data, read on Oct 20, 2026, lists it under certificate 57803 as active and insured since Aug 2, 2004. The FDIC says deposits are automatically insured to at least $250,000 at each FDIC-insured bank, and Ally's FDIC page puts the standard amount at $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. Balances above that in one category are not covered, and Ally prints that the securities sold through Ally Invest are not FDIC insured and may lose value.

Online Savings Account: no fees, a rate under our average, a 10-withdrawal cap

The Ally Online Savings Account pays 3.10% APY as of Oct 20, 2026 (Ally's page prints 3.1%), compounded daily, with no monthly fee and no minimum opening deposit. The rate is variable. Against our 3.21% average it is 0.11 points low, which is $11.00 a year on $10,000 ($310.00 against $321.00), our arithmetic and only if both rates held for 12 months.

The draw is organization: up to 30 savings buckets inside one account, with interest on the total balance, plus recurring transfers, Round Ups and Surprise Savings, which moves money Ally judges safe to save from linked checking accounts.

The catch is the cap. Ally limits certain withdrawals and transfers from savings and money market accounts to a combined 10 per statement cycle, counting, depending on account type, online and mobile transfers (between Ally accounts or to a third party), checks, debit card purchases and Overdraft Transfer Service. Going over costs nothing, but Ally says it will close the account if you exceed the limit on more than an occasional basis. One online transfer a week out of savings uses about 4 of the 10. Deposits are unlimited.

Spending Account: checking with no monthly fee and a low rate

Ally's checking account is the Spending Account. Its checking page lists no monthly, overdraft item or low-balance fee and no minimum to open. The Ally Spending Account pays 0.10% APY under $15,000 and 0.25% APY at $15,000 or more, variable, as of Oct 20, 2026, with the end-of-day balance deciding the tier. The rate is the weak point: $10,000 earns $10.00 a year at the lower tier, against $310.00 in Ally's savings account, which is why our checking vs savings explainer treats them as different jobs.

Access is its strength. Ally lists 75,000+ Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs as free and reimburses up to $10 per statement cycle for fees at other ATMs. The deposit agreement, effective Oct 10, 2026, says the reimbursement covers fees from U.S. ATM operators within the U.S. and its territories, not non-U.S. operators and not international transaction fees, and arrives as a lump sum at the end of the cycle.

Early direct deposit is built in and gives access to pay up to 2 days sooner. CoverDraft is an opt-in cushion of up to $100 at no charge, usually from 30 days after you deposit $100 in total, rising to $250 after a qualifying direct deposit of at least $250 for two months in a row. Ally says it is not a line of credit or a guarantee: a purchase above the limit is declined, though Ally says it never charges an overdraft fee. More options are in our best checking accounts.

Money Market Account: the same rate as savings, with a debit card and checks

The Ally Money Market Account pays the same variable APY as savings as of Oct 20, 2026, with no monthly fee and no minimum balance to earn it. Its edge is access: a debit card, checks, unlimited withdrawals at Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs and the same ATM-fee reimbursement as the Spending Account. The cost is the same 10-per-cycle cap, which checks and debit card purchases count toward, plus no buckets, no boosters and no free online bill pay. Per Ally's FAQ, it is not a money market fund and only the rate is variable.

CDs: ten priced terms and penalties of 60 to 150 days of interest

Ally's main CD families are High Yield, Raise Your Rate and No Penalty. The term-by-term APYs below come from the term pickers on its High Yield, Raise Your Rate and No Penalty CD pages and were current on Oct 19, 2026.

TermCD typeAPY, fixed for the termEarly withdrawal penalty
3 monthsHigh Yield2.80%60 days of interest
6 monthsHigh Yield3.85%60 days of interest
9 monthsHigh Yield4.00%60 days of interest

36 monthsHigh Yield4.10%90 days of interest
48 monthsRaise Your Rate3.00%120 days of interest
60 monthsHigh Yield4.25%150 days of interest

A penalty is a number of days of interest, calculated at the interest rate in effect when you ask to close and taken first from accrued interest, then from principal if needed. A 12-month CD opened with $10,000 at 4.30% would owe about $70 for 60 days, our arithmetic and not an Ally figure. Partial withdrawals are not allowed, and money cannot be added until maturity. Our CD early withdrawal penalties by bank shows how other banks compare.

Of the ten priced terms, the highest APY is the 18-month one, not the longest. The 12-month, 18-month and 60-month High Yield CDs are the three terms above our CD average, which mixes terms and is context, not a like-for-like benchmark. Against Ally's savings account, the 12-month CD pays 1.20 points more, or $120 a year on $10,000 ($430 against $310, our arithmetic). Raise Your Rate allows one raise on the 2-year term and two on the 4-year term if Ally's rate for that term rises, and you must request each. Both terms pay 3.00% today. The No Penalty CD pays 0.30 points less than savings, in exchange for a fixed rate and an exit from the seventh day after funding, full balance only.

Ally adds a 10-day grace period at maturity, automatic renewal, a 0.05% renewal reward it says it currently gives, a Ten Day Best Rate Guarantee if you fund within 9 days of opening, and promotional 7- and 14-month Select CDs not priced here. Rankings: best CD rates and the best CD rates guide.

What Ally still charges

Ally lists no fee for monthly maintenance, overdrafts, excess transactions, returned deposits, standard checks, official checks or its own ATM withdrawals. What it does charge:

  • Outgoing domestic wire: $20 per request. Ally offers no outgoing international wires.
  • Stop payment: $15 per request.
  • Expedited delivery: $15 per package.
  • International transactions: up to 1% of the transaction on checking and money market.
  • Spending Account bill pay: $14.95 overnight, $9.95 same day. Standard bill pay is free.
  • Other ATM operators: their own fee, taken from your account before any reimbursement.

Can you deposit cash at Ally Bank?

Ally has no branches, and its deposits FAQ says it does not accept cash, including by mail or at ATMs. The one route is the add-cash feature: you show an app barcode at a Walmart Money Center or customer service desk, and it works only for the Spending Account. Ally's help page sets $20 to $999 per transaction, $1,000 a day and five transactions a month, while its story page words it as up to $1,000 per day, up to five times a month. Five $999 adds come to $4,995 a month, our arithmetic, and $3,000 takes at least four days.

Ally Bank pros and cons

  • Pro: no monthly fee on any deposit account, no minimum to open and unlimited deposits.
  • Pro: checking and money market get 75,000+ fee-free ATMs and up to $10 a cycle of other U.S. ATMs' fees reimbursed.
  • Pro: a 12-month CD at 4.30%, above our CD average, and a Ten Day Best Rate Guarantee.
  • Con: savings pays 0.11 points under our average and caps withdrawals at 10 per cycle.
  • Con: checking pays a fraction of the savings rate, CD penalties run 60 to 150 days of interest, and cash goes in only through Walmart.

Who Ally Bank fits

Ally fits savers who want savings, checking and a money market account in one app, move money out a handful of times a month, and value no fees and a large ATM network over the top rate. It fits less well for anyone who draws on savings more than 10 times a cycle, takes in a lot of cash or wants a branch. This is general information, not personalized financial advice.

How we checked

We read Ally's savings, Spending, money market and CD rate pages on Oct 20, 2026, plus its deposit agreement, help pages and the FDIC's own pages. Ally dates its rates "correct as of 10/20/26". Dollar figures for earnings are our arithmetic and assume rates hold. The Financeradar averages are not a national index, and our rate tracker logs dated moves. We did not open an account. Confirm current rates and terms with Ally before you open or fund one. Financeradar may earn a commission from some links; it never affects rankings (how we make money).
