Best airline credit cards in 2026

Transferable points beat a co-brand unless you already fly that airline. A modest annual fee is the usual price of keeping those miles movable, and lounge access is a separate purchase.

Rates and fees in this guide were read on September 23, 2026. They change without notice, so open the product page linked in each pick for the current figure and the date it was read.

TL;DR

Short answer, verified on issuer pages on September 23, 2026: Chase Sapphire Preferred is the airline card if you do not fly one carrier. The annual fee is $95, the public bonus posts after you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months, and points transfer to United, Southwest, and JetBlue. Citi Strata Premier earns more on the ticket itself and transfers to American, at that same fee, but Citi publishes no fixed bonus. Delta SkyMiles Gold is the co-brand if you fly Delta: no annual fee the first year, then $150, and the miles stay in SkyMiles.

FinanceRadar data: of the 67 credit cards we verify, 36 charge no annual fee (54%), and the average annual fee is $142 (fees checked September to October 2026; we have logged 1,053 dated checks since August 2026).

A co-brand only wins when the airline is the one you already fly. Chase Sapphire Preferred keeps the miles movable, which is the point of an airline card if your trips split across carriers. Citi Strata Premier pays more on the ticket you buy from the airline, and it is the path into American. Delta SkyMiles Gold is the Delta path, and those miles cannot become United miles later.

Capital One Venture is the third transferable option at that fee tier, because every purchase earns miles, not only the flight. The wider travel set, including hotel-heavy cards, is best travel credit cards. This page stays on flights, and the full published set is the credit card directory.

Flyers who split trips across airlines and want a published bonus.

+A flight booked outside Chase Travel earns the lower travel rate, and the higher rate applies only inside Chase Travel, so the site you use changes what the ticket earns.
+Points transfer to United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards, JetBlue TrueBlue, Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways, Flying Blue, and four more airlines on the card page.
+There is no foreign transaction fee, and one statement credit of up to $120 every four years covers Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS if you fly often enough to use it.
−The $95 annual fee is charged from year one, with no first-year waiver, so you pay it even if a later trip would have fit a co-brand better.
−Chase will not open another Preferred while you already hold one, and the new-cardmember bonus can be blocked if you have held this card or taken its bonus before.

People who buy airline tickets direct and want ThankYou points.

+Air travel, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and gas and EV charging earn the higher rate, and everything else earns the base rate.
+Hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on cititravel.com earn 10X, which is a portal rate and does not apply to the airfare you buy from the airline.
+ThankYou points can move to American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, and Eva Air, which is the American path Preferred does not offer. Choice Hotels and The Leading Hotels of the World are on the list too, once you hold at least 1,000 points.
−The annual hotel benefit is $100 off one stay of $500 or more, once per calendar year, through cititravel.com or Citi's hotel phone line. It does not reduce airfare you buy on the airline's site.
−Citi's FAQ says bonus offers change, and the public card page publishes no fixed point total, so read the offer on the application before you count it.

Everyday spend that should become transferable miles, not only the fare.

+Every purchase earns miles, with no category you have to hit. Hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel earn the higher portal rate.
+The published bonus arrives after $4,000 in purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Capital One describes that bonus as worth more than $1,000 in travel value on the card page.
+A one-time $300 Capital One Travel credit covers hotel and vacation rental bookings in the first cardholder year. It expires one year after account opening and does not earn rewards, so it is not an airfare credit.
−You are not eligible for the bonus if you received a new cardmember bonus for Venture or Venture X in the past 48 months, so a recent Venture X bonus blocks this one too.
−The first-year stays credit only works inside Capital One Travel, so a hotel you book direct does not use it, and neither does a flight on the airline site.

Delta flyers who want the bag waiver without a lounge-card fee.

+Delta purchases made direct with Delta, plus restaurants worldwide and US supermarkets, earn more than other purchases, and the miles post to SkyMiles, so a United trip never builds this balance.
+The first checked bag is free on Delta for the basic cardmember and up to eight companions on the same reservation. A second bag is free on domestic Delta itineraries, though a partner-operated codeshare is not eligible.
+TakeOff 15 takes at least 15% off the mileage portion of a Delta award booked at delta.com or in the Fly Delta app. Partner-operated flights are excluded, and the discount does not touch taxes and fees.
−After the first year the annual fee is $150. The $200 flight credit needs a calendar-year spend bar, and the eCredit expires within a year of issuance, so it only helps if you will clear that bar.
−The rideshare credit, up to $10 a month, starts only after the first renewal and needs enrollment. Gold has no Delta Sky Club access, so year one is the bag waiver and the miles.

Airline tickets when you will not pay an annual fee.

+Unlimited points on travel, and Wells Fargo's travel category includes airlines, hotels, rental cars, cruise lines, travel agencies, and discount travel sites, so a ticket on an online agency still qualifies.
+That same higher rate hits restaurants, gas and EV charging, and transit, then the base rate on other purchases, with no cap stated on the card page.
+There is no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. A 0% intro APR lasts 12 months from account opening on purchases, then 18.74%, 24.74%, or 28.74% variable.
−Wells Fargo publishes no airline partner list, so you only see the participating programs inside the rewards transfer flow, and a specific airline is not a promise you can read before you apply.
−You may not get the intro APR or the rewards bonus if you opened this card in the last 48 months, even if that account is closed.

Delta flyers who will book the companion trip every year after renewal.

+Delta purchases and hotels booked direct earn more than restaurants and US supermarkets, while other purchases earn only the base rate.
+A Delta Main companion certificate arrives each year after renewal, for domestic, Caribbean, or Central American round trips. It can also cover the flight portion of a Delta Vacations package, which is why you pay more than Gold.
+MQD Headstart deposits $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars each Medallion Qualification Year. MQD Boost adds $1 MQD for each $20 in purchases. Delta's page says Silver Medallion is reached at 5,000 MQDs, so the headstart is halfway there before you spend.
−The $350 annual fee starts in year one, the companion certificate is not a year-one benefit, and government taxes and fees of $22 to $250 still have to be paid.
−There is no Delta Sky Club access, because Amex puts lounge access on the Reserve card and Delta's table marks Platinum Sky Club as no longer offered.

Travelers who will book through Capital One Travel and use the lounge.

+Flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel earn the premium portal rate, and hotels and rental cars booked there earn 10X. A ticket on the airline site earns the everyday rate Venture already pays at a lower fee.
+A $300 annual Capital One Travel credit, plus 10,000 bonus miles after each anniversary starting with the first, is how the fee gets offset if you actually book in that portal.
+The card page headlines the same published bonus as Venture. The offer is tied to the Apply Now path, and a prior bonus on this product in the past 48 months blocks a new one.
−The annual credit is a Capital One Travel credit, so a flight you buy on the airline's site does not spend it, and the fee is hard to justify from airfare booked direct.
−The premium flight rate applies only inside the travel portal. A ticket on the airline site earns the everyday rate Venture already pays at a lower fee, which makes this card the lounge and the credit.

Travelers who will use the travel credit and still want direct-flight points.

+Flights and hotels booked direct earn 4x, and Chase Travel purchases, including The Edit, earn 8x, so the airline edge over Preferred is that direct-flight multiple rather than a longer partner list.
+The bonus is 100,000 points after $6,000 in the first 3 months. Chase prices that bonus at $2,000 on select flights and hotels through Chase Travel, a portal value rather than a SkyMiles or MileagePlus award.
+Reserve returns up to $300 in statement credits on travel purchases each account anniversary year, and that can include airfare, but purchases that qualify for the credit earn no points.
−Each authorized user adds $195 a year on top of the $795 annual fee, a second lounge-card charge if you add a partner who flies with you.
−Chase will not issue Reserve if you already have it open, and the bonus can be refused if you have held this card or received its bonus before.

Delta flyers who will use Sky Club and the companion certificate.

+Delta purchases earn more than other eligible purchases, and TakeOff 15 applies on the same Delta-operated award rules as Gold, so the earn story is the Delta ticket rather than restaurants or supermarkets.
+You get 15 Delta Sky Club visits each Medallion year when flying Delta, and unlimited visits only after a calendar-year spend bar, plus four one-time guest passes that year.
+MQD Headstart matches the $2,500 Platinum deposits, and MQD Boost is faster, at $1 MQD for each $10 in purchases, which cuts the spend Platinum needs for the same status progress.
−The $650 annual fee buys that visit cap and the companion certificate, not a higher everyday rate. Each additional Delta Reserve card is $175 a year.
−The Comfort certificates in the welcome offer are valid for Comfort or Main, booked 21 or more days ahead. Taxes and fees still run up to $80 per person, so the certificates are not a free trip.

Flyers who will use the incidental-fee credit and the lounge network.

+5X Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year, then the base rate. Prepaid hotels on AmexTravel.com earn that same flight rate.
+Up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year covers incidental fees at one selected qualifying airline. Amex lists checked bags, in-flight refreshments, flight-change fees, and lounge day passes, and the fare itself is not the credit.
+Points transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners combined, with no foreign transaction fee. The Global Lounge Collection includes 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying an eligible Delta flight, and Amex counted the collection at over 1,550 lounges as of January 2026.
−Each additional Platinum card is $195 a year, while Companion Platinum cards have no annual fee.
−Amex publishes no fixed public welcome bonus on this card. Other purchases earn the base rate, so everyday spend is a weak miles engine next to Venture.

What an airline credit card is

An airline credit card earns miles or points for flights: a co-brand deposits them at one airline, and a transferable card holds them at the issuer until you move them to a program.

That split decides the card before the bonus does. Delta SkyMiles Gold, Delta SkyMiles Platinum, and Delta SkyMiles Reserve post miles to a SkyMiles account, so a United trip never builds that balance. Preferred, Strata Premier, Venture, and American Express Platinum post points you can transfer. SkyMiles redeemed through Pay with Miles are a fixed trade: 5,000 miles generally provide $50 toward a Delta ticket on delta.com. You can receive less if the fare is not a multiple of that amount.

The booking site changes the earn rate on the ticket. Strata Premier pays more when you buy from the airline, while Preferred pays less on that booking and more only through Chase Travel. Citi Strata Elite pays 6X on air travel only on cititravel.com, then 1.5X on other purchases, so an airline-site fare misses that portal rate. Elite's annual fee is $595, and an authorized user is $75 a year, a lounge-card price for a rate that vanishes if you book direct.

The fee is buying either flexibility or a Delta perk

On the credit card statistics page, published annual fees run from $0 to $895, and the average is $200, as of September 23, 2026. That catalog average mixes no-fee cards with premium travel cards. The real choice is a fee near the Preferred tier, a Delta co-brand, or a lounge card whose airline rate is not why you are paying.

The companion certificate is why you step up from Gold, and it does not arrive in year one. Platinum and Reserve each issue one after renewal, so the first year is the fee without the free companion. Taxes and fees run from $22 to $250 on an itinerary of up to four segments, and Delta Basic fares are excluded. Platinum's certificate is Delta Main, while Reserve's can be Delta First, Delta Comfort, or Delta Main. If you will not book that trip, the extra fee is a lounge and status product, which is Sapphire Reserve or the Amex Platinum card's job, not Gold's.

How we ranked: on September 23, 2026 I read each issuer card page, the Amex terms sheets for the three Delta cards, and Delta's comparison for the live welcome offers. I kept cards that earn on flights or transfer to an airline. I ordered them by whether the miles can move, the rate on a ticket you book yourself, and the fee, and no one paid for a slot. This is general information, not personalized financial advice, and a commission on some links does not change which airline card ranks where (how we make money).

What to look for

Whether the miles can leave the airlineEssential

Preferred moves miles to United, Southwest, JetBlue, and seven more airlines. Strata Premier moves them to American, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, and Eva Air after a minimum transfer. Delta miles stay in SkyMiles, which rules the co-brand out for a mixed year.

The rate on a ticket you book yourselfEssential

Strata Premier and Autograph pay more when you book the ticket yourself, and Reserve pays more on flights booked direct. Platinum's top rate covers airline and Amex Travel bookings until a yearly cap, then the base rate, while Preferred pays less outside Chase Travel.

A welcome offer you can read before you applyEssential

Preferred, Venture, Reserve, and Autograph print a bonus and a spend hurdle. Delta's offers are 'as high as' and end on the date in the pricing note, so the application can show less. Strata Premier and Amex Platinum publish no fixed public bonus.

The annual fee, and the year it startsEssential

Gold waives the fee in year one and charges it after, so the first year tests the bag waiver. Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve charge from year one, and the companion certificate waits until renewal. Venture X's portal credit and anniversary miles offset its fee only if you book there.

A Delta perk that is not miles

Gold, Platinum, and Reserve waive the first checked bag on Delta when the basic cardmember's SkyMiles number is on the reservation, plus a second bag on domestic flights, and codeshare flights are excluded. Gold has no Sky Club, which is why it stays the cheaper Delta card.

Foreign transaction fee

None of these cards charges a foreign transaction fee, so an international ticket does not add one. What separates them is the annual fee, not a 3% charge on a fare bought abroad.

The APR if the ticket becomes a balance

A carried balance in the high teens or high twenties costs more than a year of miles. Autograph is the only pick here with an introductory 0% on purchases, and it lasts 12 months from account opening.

Before you apply

If your flights split across airlines, start with Preferred or Strata Premier, because a Delta card's miles and bag waiver stay inside Delta the moment the trip is not.

If you fly Delta and want the bag waiver without a lounge-card fee, Gold is the co-brand. Step to Platinum only when you will use the companion certificate after renewal, since year one does not include it.

If the ticket is the main spend and you want American or JetBlue, Strata Premier's air-travel rate beats Preferred's rate on other travel. Read the bonus on the application, because Citi publishes no fixed public bonus.

If grocery and everyday spend should become miles too, Venture earns on every purchase, not only the fare. Preferred does not pay its travel rate on non-travel purchases.

If you want airline points and refuse an annual fee, Autograph pays more on airline purchases than on ordinary spend. It says points transfer to select programs and does not name the airlines, so check the list inside the account.

If you want Reserve or Amex Platinum only for the fare multiplier, price the credits you will use first. Both charge a lounge-card fee for a rate a cheaper card can approach.

If the annual fee is the whole objection, use the no-annual-fee card guide, and use cards by credit score when approval is the open question. These airline issuers print no score cutoff, so this ranking does not invent one.

Evaluation Checklist

Write down the airline you actually flew last year, and if more than one name appears, a transferable card outranks a Delta co-brand before you look at the bonus.

For a ticket bought on the airline's site, compare Strata Premier, Reserve, and Platinum against Preferred's rate outside Chase Travel. Portal rates are a separate purchase, not the fare you book yourself.

On a Delta card, confirm the basic cardmember's SkyMiles number will be on the reservation, because without it the first-bag waiver does not apply and codeshare flights are out either way.

Read the welcome offer on the application before you count it. Delta's public offers are 'as high as' and close on the pricing-note date, Citi's Strata bonus can change, and Amex can withhold an offer based on your history.

For Venture or Venture X, check whether you took either bonus inside the window printed on Venture, because Capital One blocks the new bonus if you did.

For Autograph, confirm you have not opened that card inside its printed window, and that you have not opened another Wells Fargo consumer card inside the recent-card window on the same page.

If you will carry the fare past the statement, compare the purchase APR with the miles, and remember Autograph is the only card here with a published introductory purchase APR.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • ×

Buying a Delta card for a United or American trip, because the miles post to SkyMiles and the bag waiver is a Delta benefit, so the other airline gets neither.

  • ×

Paying for Sapphire Reserve to earn more transfer partners than Preferred, when both transfer and Reserve's airline edge is 4x on flights booked direct plus the travel credit, at a much higher fee.

  • ×

Counting Venture X's portal flight rate on a ticket bought at delta.com or united.com, when that premium rate is Capital One Travel and the airline site earns the everyday rate.

  • ×

Skipping enrollment on Gold's rideshare credit and treating it as automatic in year one, when it starts after the first renewal and is not a flight benefit.

  • ×

Assuming the Platinum airline credit posts on the fare, when it posts on incidental fees and only after you have selected one qualifying airline.

  • ×

Carrying a ticket on a rewards card because the miles feel larger than the interest will cost more than those miles are worth. The Delta purchase APR band is 19.49% to 28.49% variable once any intro is absent, and Preferred starts at 19.24% variable.

  • ×

Applying for Strata Premier after holding Citi Premier and expecting the bonus, when Citi says the new-account bonus is not available if you have or had either card.

Tips

  • →

Pair Preferred with a no-fee card for everyday spend, because a second transferable card does not raise the rate on the same ticket and has to earn where Preferred does not.

  • →

If American is the airline and the ticket is booked direct, Strata Premier's air-travel rate is the cleaner earn, since Preferred does not list American as a transfer partner.

  • →

On Gold, the flight credit is an eCredit after a calendar-year spend bar of $10,000, and it cannot pay a bag fee, while the bag waiver is separate and does not require that spend.

  • →

Venture's miles on non-travel spend are the reason to hold it beside a card that earns more on the fare, because the fare rate alone does not beat Strata Premier.

  • →

Venture X's public page headlined the same bonus as Venture, plus an anniversary mile bonus, and the spend requirement for that headline bonus is on the application the day you apply.

  • →

Reserve's travel credit covers airlines, hotels, and other travel merchants Chase lists, and those purchases earn no points, so a fare that absorbs the credit earns nothing on that slice.

  • →

Approval odds are off this page because these airline issuers print no score cutoff, so see credit cards by credit score when approval is the open question.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • !

A Delta bonus described as guaranteed, when Delta says welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible, so the top of the range is not the offer you will see.

  • !

A companion certificate counted in year one, when Platinum and Reserve issue it after renewal and government taxes and fees are still due on that ticket.

  • !

Sky Club treated as unlimited on Delta Reserve, when the published visit count holds until calendar-year purchases hit the spend bar, and Platinum Delta does not include the club.

  • !

An airline fee credit counted against the fare, when the Amex Platinum credit is incidental fees at one selected airline and the airline has to code the charge so Amex can identify it.

  • !

A 6X airfare rate assumed on a ticket bought at the airline, when Strata Elite's 6X applies on cititravel.com and the base rate on other purchases is 1.5X.

  • !

Pay with Miles treated as a premium redemption, when Delta's terms set a fixed dollar trade per block of miles and you can receive less if the fare is not a multiple of that amount.

The Bottom Line

For flights in 2026, start with whether the miles can move. Chase Sapphire Preferred is the transferable default, because you can read the bonus before you apply and the transfers include United and Southwest. Citi Strata Premier earns more on the airfare and is the American Airlines path, with a bonus you have to read on the application. Delta SkyMiles Gold is the co-brand if you fly Delta, and the fee comes back after the free year.

Capital One Venture is the everyday-miles version of that fee tier, because spend that is not a ticket still earns miles. Autograph is the airline rate when you will not pay a fee. Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve are the companion-certificate and Sky Club products, while Sapphire Reserve and the Amex Platinum card are lounge cards that also earn on flights booked direct. The ranking describes published card terms, and it is general information, not personalized financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best airline credit card in 2026?

Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best fit if you do not fly one airline. You pay its annual fee from year one, the public bonus follows the spend hurdle in the table, and points transfer to United, Southwest, JetBlue, and other airlines on Chase's page. Citi Strata Premier earns more on a ticket you book yourself and transfers to American, but Citi publishes no fixed bonus. Delta SkyMiles Gold is the better card when the flights are on Delta: the fee is waived the first year and returns after that, and the miles stay in SkyMiles.

How much does an airline credit card cost in 2026?

Chase Sapphire Preferred, Citi Strata Premier, and Capital One Venture each charge a $95 annual fee. Delta SkyMiles Gold charges no annual fee the first year, then $150. Delta SkyMiles Platinum is $350, Capital One Venture X is $395, Delta SkyMiles Reserve is $650, Chase Sapphire Reserve is $795, and The Platinum Card from American Express is $895. Wells Fargo Autograph charges no annual fee, and those fees come from the issuer pages for this guide. A carried balance uses a variable purchase APR in the high teens to high twenties.

Is there a free airline credit card?

Wells Fargo Autograph charges no annual fee and pays a higher rate on airline purchases, plus 20,000 points after the spend hurdle in the table, which is low if the card is mainly buying tickets. It has a 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases, then 18.74%, 24.74%, or 28.74% variable, and no foreign transaction fee. Points can transfer, but Wells Fargo names no airlines, so you confirm the partner after approval. Delta SkyMiles Gold waives its fee in year one only, and the fee returns after that.

Is a Delta co-brand better than transferable points?

It is better when the trips are on Delta and you will use a Delta perk. Gold adds a first-bag waiver and a higher rate on Delta purchases. Platinum adds a still higher Delta rate and a companion certificate after renewal. Reserve adds a capped set of Sky Club visits per Medallion year when you are flying Delta. If the next trip might be United, Southwest, JetBlue, or American, Preferred or Strata Premier is the better fit, because those points can move and SkyMiles cannot become those currencies.

Does Chase Sapphire Preferred earn more on flights than Citi Strata Premier?

No, not on a ticket you buy from the airline. Preferred pays the lower travel rate on that booking and the Chase Travel rate only inside Chase Travel. Strata Premier pays more on air travel, including the airline booking, and 10X only on hotels, cars, and attractions booked at cititravel.com. Preferred's advantage is the partner list, including United and Southwest, and a bonus you can read before you apply. Strata Premier publishes no fixed public bonus on that same page.

How many Delta Sky Club visits does the Reserve card include?

Delta SkyMiles Reserve includes 15 visits each Medallion year to the Delta Sky Club when you are flying Delta. Unlimited visits require $75,000 in purchases on the card during a calendar year, and the card also issues four one-time guest passes each Medallion year. Delta SkyMiles Platinum does not include Sky Club, and each additional Reserve card is $175. Amex Platinum is a different product, and its lounge collection includes 10 Delta Sky Club visits on an eligible Delta flight.

Do these airline cards charge a foreign transaction fee?
