Best credit card welcome bonuses in 2026

The largest bonus an issuer prices in dollars is on Sapphire Reserve, and it holds only if you redeem where Chase sets that price. A no-fee business card pays cash instead, and several famous cards publish no fixed offer.

Rates and fees in this guide were read on September 23, 2026. They change without notice, so open the product page linked in each pick for the current figure and the date it was read.

TL;DR

Short answer, verified on issuer pages on September 23, 2026: the Chase Sapphire Reserve pays 100,000 points after you spend $6,000 in 3 months, and Chase prices those points at $2,000 on select Chase Travel flights and hotels. The annual fee is $795. Capital One Venture pays 75,000 miles plus a stays credit that Capital One prices above $1,000 in travel value, on a lower spend. Chase Ink Business Unlimited pays $750 cash back with no annual fee. Ink Business Preferred matches that point total if you can spend more and you have a business.

FinanceRadar data: of the 67 credit cards we verify, 36 charge no annual fee (54%), and the average annual fee is $142 (fees checked September to October 2026; we have logged 1,104 dated checks since August 2026).

A welcome bonus is only as good as the number printed before you apply and the purchases that actually count toward it. The annual fee posts whether or not you redeem, so it comes straight off the payout. Chase's public price for the Sapphire Reserve bonus is the largest dollar figure among the catalog cards here. It fits someone who will book select flights or hotels through Chase Travel, and it is a weak fit if you want the bonus as cash in a checking account.

I ranked 10 published products by the bonus on the issuer's own page, then by the spend hurdle and the annual fee. Chase Sapphire Reserve leads on Chase's travel price, which helps only if you will use that channel. Capital One Venture pairs miles with a one-time stays credit and a lower fee, a better match if year one includes a hotel. Ink Business Unlimited pays cash with no annual fee, which suits a business that will not give a fee back out of the payout. For the year-two choice, see best travel cards, best cash-back cards, and the credit card directory.

Travelers who will redeem on Chase Travel and can pay the annual fee.

+Chase prices the bonus in the table at $2,000 for select Chase Travel flights and hotels, so cash is a weaker reason to pay the fee.
+8x points on Chase Travel, including The Edit, plus 4x on flights and hotels booked direct, which is the rate you keep after the bonus posts.
+Travel purchases can return up to $300 in statement credits each account anniversary year, but charges that use the credit earn no points, so it replaces rewards instead of stacking on the bonus.
−The annual fee is $795, and each authorized user costs $195 a year, so a partner card raises the cost before you redeem anything.
−The card is unavailable if you already have it open, and the bonus may be unavailable if you previously held this card or received its new-cardmember bonus.

A large miles bonus plus a first-year hotel or vacation-rental credit.

+Once you spend the amount in the table, Capital One calls the limited-time offer more than $1,000 in travel value, which is the issuer's price, not cash you can deposit.
+A one-time $300 Capital One Travel Stays credit covers hotels and vacation rentals, expires one year after opening, and earns no rewards, so book a stay you will actually use.
+Unlimited 2X miles on every purchase, and 5X on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, with no foreign transaction fee after the bonus.
−You are not eligible if you received a Venture or Venture X new-cardmember bonus inside the window in the table, so a prior bonus on either card closes this offer.
−The stays credit is not cash, and if it expires Capital One does not restore it when you cancel the booking, so an unused credit is value already lost.

Businesses that can meet the highest spend hurdle in this list.

+The point bonus in the table posts after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the opening window, the steepest hurdle here, and a miss if business spend is lumpy.
+3X points on the first $150,000 spent each account anniversary year, combined, on shipping, social and search advertising, internet, cable, phone services, and travel, then 1X, which is the reason to keep the card after the bonus.
+No foreign transaction fee, and employee cards cost nothing extra, but the variable APR is 17.74% to 26.74% if the business revolves the balance that earned the bonus.
−The bonus may not be available if you have ever had this card, and Chase may also weigh factors related to the business, so a prior Preferred account is the first check.
−There is no intro APR on purchases, so the bonus spend is not subsidized, and points can take 6 to 8 weeks to post after you qualify.

The same miles bonus as Venture when lounge access is why you pay the fee.

+The mile bonus matches Venture after the same spend, and Capital One says the miles post within two billing cycles, so this is not a larger welcome than Venture.
+A $300 Capital One Travel credit each year expires on the next anniversary, is separate from the welcome miles, and earns no rewards, so you must book there to collect it.
+10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5X on flights and vacation rentals booked there, and 2X on other purchases, with no foreign transaction fee.
−The annual fee is $395, a premium price for a welcome mile total that matches Venture, so you are paying for credits and earn rates, not a bigger bonus.
−You are not eligible after a Venture X new-cardmember bonus inside the window in the table, and that footnote does not name a prior Venture bonus, so the cards do not share one rule.

A Sapphire bonus when you want transfers without the Reserve fee.

+The point bonus in the table posts after you spend $5,000 in the opening window, which is less spend than Reserve and less than Ink Preferred.
+5x on Chase Travel, 3x on dining, 3x on gas, EV charging, and select vacation homes, and 2x on other travel, which is what the card earns after the bonus is done.
+Hotel stays bought through Chase Travel can return up to $100 in statement credits each account anniversary year, with no foreign transaction fee, and the credit pays only in that channel.
−The bonus may be unavailable if you previously held this card or received its new-cardmember bonus, and the card is unavailable if you already have it open.
−Chase prints no cash price for this bonus, and the Reserve price does not apply, so do not borrow Reserve's dollar figure for these points.

A cash bonus with no annual fee when business spend is steady.

+$750 cash back after the spend in the table, tracked as points at 100 points per $1, so the bonus is cash even though the ledger says points.
+Unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase, with no annual fee to subtract, which is the flat rate you keep in year two.
+0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening on purchases, then 16.74% to 24.74% variable, so the bonus math flips if you revolve the balance after that window.
−The bonus may be unavailable if you ever had this card or any other no-fee Chase for Business card, so a prior Ink Cash account can shut the offer off.
−Complimentary Instacart+ lasts three months, then auto-renews at $99 a year unless you cancel in that window, which can offset part of the cash bonus.

The same cash bonus when office, internet, and phone bills are large.

+The same cash bonus and the same intro APR on purchases as Ink Business Unlimited, with no annual fee, so you are choosing category rates rather than a bigger payout.
+5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable, and phone each account anniversary year, which is why you would pick this over Unlimited.
+2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year, then 1% on other purchases, and past those caps it is a base-rate card.
−A prior Ink Cash or Ink Unlimited can shut this offer off, because the no-fee business line covers any Chase for Business card without an annual fee.
−After that combined cap, office, internet, phone, gas, and restaurant purchases fall back to the base rate, and the welcome bonus does not extend the caps.

The largest no-fee consumer cash bonus here, if you activate categories.

+A $250 cash bonus after you spend $500 in the opening window, with a $200 offer crossed out beside the live figure, so confirm the higher number is still showing the day you apply.
+5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in rotating categories each quarter you activate, plus the same elevated rate on Chase Travel, and a skipped quarter earns the base rate.
+3% on dining, including takeout, and at drugstores, then 1% on other purchases, with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, so unactivated spend earns less.
−The rotating categories pay the elevated rate only after you activate that quarter, and they change, so a missed activation means that spend earned the base rate.
−The card is unavailable if you already have it, or if you received its new-cardmember bonus within the last 24 months, which blocks a repeat bonus.

A low spend hurdle when you want a flat base rate on everything else.

+A $200 bonus, which Chase describes as 20,000 points redeemable for that cash, after the low spend in the table, so the headline is cash and the ledger is points.
+Unlimited 1.5% on other purchases, 3% on dining including takeout and eligible delivery and at drugstores, plus an elevated Chase Travel rate, which is why you keep it after the bonus.
+The same intro APR on purchases and balance transfers as Freedom Flex, then the same variable range, with no annual fee, and cash back does not expire while the account is open.
−Foreign transactions carry a fee on this card's pricing and terms, while Flex charges none, so this is the worse card if the bonus spend happens abroad.
−At Amazon checkout, Chase values each point at $0.008, so 100 points equal $0.80, below a straight cash redemption, and a poor place to spend the bonus.

A flat-rate card when the bonus itself is not the reason to apply.

+A $100 cash rewards bonus when the opening spend in the table posts, the smallest payout here, which is fine when the bonus is only a side payment.
+Unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases after that bonus, with no annual fee, which is the reason to keep the card once the signup cash has posted.
+An intro APR for 12 months on purchases and on qualifying balance transfers made within 120 days of opening, which matters more if you are moving a balance than chasing the bonus.
−There is a 3% fee on each foreign transaction converted to U.S. dollars, and on a modest trip that fee can erase a year of the extra rewards.
−You may miss the intro APR and the rewards bonus if you have this card or opened one inside the window in the table, even if that account is closed with a zero balance.

What a credit card welcome bonus is

A credit card welcome bonus is a one-time reward the issuer pays after you open the account and post a set amount of purchases in a set window, usually three months. If that number is not printed before you apply, you cannot compare it with the offers ranked here.

The bonus is not the ongoing earn rate. Reserve still pays 8x on Chase Travel after the points post, and Venture still pays unlimited 2X miles after its mile bonus posts. Those rates matter in year two, once the welcome payout is gone, and they are not a second bonus.

On the Chase offers in this guide, balance transfers, cash advances, wire transfers, person-to-person transfers, lottery tickets, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, do not count. Paying the annual fee does not move you closer to the bonus, so budget the hurdle with ordinary purchases.

Points and cash stay different units until the issuer prices them. Chase prices the Reserve bonus for select Chase Travel bookings, prices the Freedom Unlimited bonus as cash, and Capital One prices the Venture offer as travel value. Adding those units together mixes currencies.

The fee and the lookback decide the bonus

On the credit card statistics page, every card in the sample advertises a welcome bonus, and published annual fees run from $0 to $895, as of September 23, 2026. A bonus that every card advertises is not a way to sort them, so this ranking uses the public terms.

Reserve's annual fee hits before a single point is redeemed, and Chase's published price applies only to select flights and hotels through Chase Travel. Venture, Sapphire Preferred, and Ink Business Preferred share a much lower fee, so the bonus costs less to hold. Venture X charges more for the same mile welcome as Venture, plus a separate annual travel credit, so the extra fee buys extras rather than a larger signup. The no-fee Ink cards pay cash and skip that subtraction if you will not use a travel portal.

Lookbacks erase the bonus even when the marketing page still shows it. Venture blocks the bonus after a Venture or Venture X new-cardmember bonus inside the window in the table. Venture X's footnote blocks a prior Venture X bonus and does not name Venture, so the two cards are not one lock. Ink Unlimited and Ink Cash may withhold the bonus if you ever had that card or any other no-fee Chase for Business card, with no clock on that line. Ink Preferred's block is narrower: ever having had Preferred itself.

The public American Express Platinum Card lists an $895 annual fee and no fixed welcome offer. Amex Gold lists a $325 annual fee and none either. Delta SkyMiles Reserve lists a $650 fee and Hilton Honors Aspire a $550 fee, again with no fixed public bonus as of that same check. Credits and status can still justify them, but a bonus you cannot read cannot be compared, so they are not ranked here. Approval odds are separate: credit cards by credit score.

What to look for

A bonus printed before you applyEssential

Reserve, Venture, both no-fee Ink cards, Preferred, Venture X, Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, and Active Cash print a bonus and a spend hurdle you can compare before you apply. Platinum, Gold, Delta Reserve, and Hilton Aspire do not publish a fixed public bonus, so they are off this list.

The spend hurdle and the clockEssential

Most hurdles run three months from account opening, so a bonus you cannot spend into is one you will miss. The Freedom cards use a low hurdle, Ink Preferred uses the highest, and Chase can take 6 to 8 weeks to post the bonus after you qualify.

Whether the annual fee comes off the bonusEssential

Reserve's fee is the premium charge in the table, Venture X is the next fee, and Venture, Sapphire Preferred, and Ink Preferred share a lower fee. The no-fee cards do not have to earn a yearly charge back before the bonus is a gain.

How the issuer prices the bonusEssential

Chase prices Reserve points for select Chase Travel flights and hotels, a weak match if you want cash. Capital One calls the Venture package travel value above a four-figure line, while the no-fee cards pay cash. Preferred and Sapphire Preferred points can transfer, and Chase prints no cash price for either bonus.

The lookback that can erase it

Sapphire cards can withhold a bonus if you held that same card or its bonus before, so a current cardholder should not expect a second payout. Freedom cards use a 24-month window. Venture uses the longer window in the table and names both Venture and Venture X. The no-fee Ink cards can block the bonus if you ever had any no-fee Chase business card.

Purchases that do not count

Chase excludes cash advances, balance transfers, person-to-person transfers, betting, and fees, including the annual fee, so none of those finish the bonus. Wells Fargo's Active Cash footnote also excludes gift cards, wire transfers, and fees. A manufactured spend that the issuer calls a cash equivalent does not finish the bonus either.

The APR if the balance survives the month

Reserve, Preferred, Venture, and Venture X have a variable purchase APR with no intro period, so carrying the bonus spend is pure interest. The no-fee Ink cards offer 0% for 12 months on purchases, and the Freedom cards run a longer intro. A carried balance at the post-intro APR costs more than the bonus.

What the card earns after the bonus

The bonus is one time. Reserve keeps elevated travel rates, Venture and Venture X keep flat miles, Ink Cash keeps capped categories, Freedom Flex keeps a quarterly cap you must activate, and Active Cash keeps an unlimited flat rate.

Before you apply

If you will not book through Chase Travel, do not treat Reserve's priced bonus as cash. The price Chase prints is only for select flights and hotels there.

If you want cash and you have a business, start with Ink Business Unlimited or Ink Business Cash. The bonus matches, and the annual fee does not come out of it.

If you already received a Venture or Venture X bonus inside the window in the table, skip Venture. Read the Venture X footnote separately, because it names a prior Venture X bonus and not a Venture bonus.

If you have ever had a no-fee Chase business card, assume the Ink Unlimited and Ink Cash bonuses may be unavailable. Preferred uses a different rule, limited to Preferred itself.

If the only reason you want Platinum or Gold is a giant published bonus, stop on the public page. Neither publishes a fixed offer you can compare with the cards ranked here.

If you will carry a balance, compare the post-intro APR with the bonus, because interest is the cost that outruns a one-time reward. The no-annual-fee card guide is the better page when the fee is the whole objection.

Evaluation Checklist

Read the bonus on the issuer page the day you apply. Venture and Venture X say the offer may disappear if you leave the page, and Chase says offers can change by channel.

Write down the spend and the window. Ink Preferred's hurdle is $8,000, and missing it means the points never post, while Freedom and Active Cash open on a much smaller spend.

Confirm the lookback before you apply: Venture names both Venture and Venture X for the window in the table, and the no-fee Ink cards name any no-fee Chase business card with no time limit.

Subtract purchases that do not count: Chase excludes the annual fee, cash advances, and person-to-person transfers, and Wells Fargo also excludes gift cards and fees.

For Reserve, decide whether you will redeem on select Chase Travel flights and hotels. That is the redemption Chase prices, and a different redemption is a different value.

For Freedom Flex, check that you will activate the quarter. The standing rates without activation are the dining and drugstore rate on the card and 1% elsewhere.

If you will carry a balance past the intro window, compare that APR with the bonus. Interest is the cost that outruns a one-time reward.

Issuer product pages, Chase's Ink comparison page, Capital One travel-card terms, and Chase pricing and terms, September 23, 2026. Chase's Reserve price applies to select flights and hotels through Chase Travel. Capital One's travel-value line is the issuer's claim for the Venture offer, not a cash price. Annual fees do not count toward Chase spend hurdles.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • ×

Paying the Reserve fee and then redeeming the bonus somewhere other than the select Chase Travel bookings Chase prices.

  • ×

Missing the three-month window, which Chase and Capital One start at account opening, with Chase allowing 6 to 8 weeks after you qualify before the bonus posts.

  • ×

Applying for Ink Unlimited after you already had Ink Cash, or the reverse. The no-fee business bonus line covers any Chase for Business card without an annual fee.

  • ×

Assuming a Venture X bonus inside that lookback still leaves Venture open. Venture's footnote names both cards, so the earlier bonus closes this one.

  • ×

Carrying a balance past the intro window. The Freedom cards and the no-fee Ink cards then charge a variable purchase APR that can outrun the cash bonus.

  • ×

Taking Freedom Unlimited or Active Cash abroad, where the foreign transaction fee can exceed a year of extra rewards on a modest trip.

  • ×

Forgetting to activate Freedom Flex and expecting the rotating category rate, which requires activation even though the welcome bonus does not.

  • ×

Switching an existing Wells Fargo Visa to Active Cash and expecting the cash rewards bonus. Wells Fargo says a switch does not include one.

Tips

  • →

If two cards show the same point total, compare the fee and the spend, not the headline. Reserve and Ink Preferred show the same point total, and the fee and the hurdle are the difference.

  • →

Venture's stays credit expires one year after opening and covers hotels and vacation rentals through Capital One Travel, while Venture X's travel credit renews each year and expires on the anniversary.

  • →

Preferred is the transferable-points bonus when Reserve's fee is the objection. Confirm the transfer list you will actually use, including United, Southwest, Hyatt, and Marriott on Chase's page.

  • →

Ink Cash beats Ink Unlimited on the bonus math only when office supplies, internet, cable, phone, gas, or restaurants will hit the capped rates. Otherwise the cash bonus is the same and Unlimited is the flatter card.

  • →

Freedom Flex is the consumer cash bonus to confirm on the day you apply. When this page was checked, the live offer was the higher figure in the table, with a lower figure crossed out.

  • →

Active Cash is the ongoing flat-rate card. The bonus is the smallest in this list, which is fine when the flat rate is the reason and the bonus is a side payment.

  • →

Targeted offers that appear only after you log in are not the public offers ranked here. If your account shows a different bonus, the terms on that screen control, not this page.

  • →

Where the issuer did not print a score cutoff, this page does not invent one. See credit cards by credit score.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • !

A welcome bonus described as guaranteed when the issuer says prior cardholders may be blocked, which is how a roundup overstates an offer you cannot get.

  • !

Counting the annual fee, a cash advance, or a person-to-person transfer toward the spend hurdle.

  • !

Treating Reserve's Chase Travel price as the cash value of every point, including points you redeem somewhere else.

  • !

Applying for Venture X to get a bigger welcome mile total than Venture. The public mile bonus matches, so the fee is not buying a larger signup.

  • !

Leaving an Instacart+ trial running on a no-fee Ink card. It auto-renews after the complimentary months and can eat into the cash bonus.

  • !

A Platinum or Gold application made because a roundup quoted a bonus the public page does not publish.

The Bottom Line

For a bonus you can read today, start with Sapphire Reserve if you will redeem on select Chase Travel bookings, Venture if you want miles plus a first-year stays credit, and Ink Business Unlimited if you want cash with no annual fee. Ink Preferred matches Reserve's point total at a lower fee and a higher spend, and it requires a business. Freedom Flex is the low-spend consumer cash bonus, and Active Cash is the flat-rate card rather than the bonus leader.

Platinum, Gold, Delta SkyMiles Reserve, and Hilton Honors Aspire were left out because their public pages do not publish a fixed welcome offer, as of September 23, 2026. This is general information, not personalized financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best credit card sign-up bonus in 2026?

As of September 23, 2026, the largest bonus an issuer prices in dollars in this guide is 100,000 points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which Chase prices at $2,000 for select flights and hotels through Chase Travel, after the spend in the table. Capital One Venture pairs its mile bonus with a one-time stays credit and calls the package more than $1,000 in travel value. Chase Ink Business Unlimited pays cash and charges no annual fee. The right one depends on whether you will use Chase Travel, whether you have a business, and whether a prior card blocks the bonus.

How much does a credit card welcome bonus cost in 2026?

Sapphire Reserve costs a $795 annual fee, plus $195 for each authorized user. Capital One Venture X costs a $395 annual fee. Capital One Venture, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and Ink Business Preferred each cost a $95 annual fee. Ink Business Unlimited, Ink Business Cash, Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, and Wells Fargo Active Cash charge no annual fee. The American Express Platinum Card costs an $895 annual fee and publishes no fixed welcome offer. Issuer pages supplied these fees on September 23, 2026, and interest is separate if you carry a balance.

Is there a free credit card with a welcome bonus?

Yes. Ink Business Unlimited and Ink Business Cash each pay the cash bonus in the table and charge no annual fee, with an intro APR for 12 months on purchases, then 16.74% to 24.74% variable. Chase Freedom Flex pays $250 after a small opening spend, and Chase Freedom Unlimited pays $200 after the same size spend. Both Freedom cards charge no annual fee and offer 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and on balance transfers, after which the rate is 18.24% to 27.74% variable. Wells Fargo Active Cash pays $100 and then earns unlimited 2%, also with no annual fee. None of them is free of interest after the intro window.

Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve bonus better than Sapphire Preferred?

On the issuer pages, Reserve pays the larger point bonus and Preferred pays a smaller one. Chase prices the Reserve bonus for select Chase Travel flights and hotels and does not print that price on the Preferred page. Preferred's spend hurdle is $5,000 in 3 months. Reserve's annual fee is much higher, and each authorized user adds another yearly charge. Preferred fits when you want transferable points, including United, Southwest, Hyatt, and Marriott, without the Reserve fee. Reserve fits when you will use the redemption Chase prices.

Does the annual fee count toward the bonus spend?

Not on the Chase offers in this guide. Chase says fees of any kind, including an annual fee, do not count as purchases toward the new-cardmember bonus. Balance transfers, cash advances, wire transfers, and person-to-person transfers do not count either. Wells Fargo's Active Cash footnote also excludes fees, interest, gift cards, and wire transfers from that cash bonus. Plan the hurdle with ordinary purchases.

Can you get a Chase Ink welcome bonus if you already had a Chase business card?

Ink Business Unlimited and Ink Business Cash say the new-cardmember bonus may not be available if you have ever had that card or any other Chase for Business card without an annual fee, so one no-fee card can block the other. Ink Business Preferred uses a narrower line: the bonus may not be available if you have ever had Preferred itself. Chase may also weigh factors related to the business. The Preferred bonus matches Reserve's point total after you spend $8,000.

What if you already received a Capital One Venture bonus?

Capital One's Venture terms say you are not eligible for the Venture bonus if you received a new-cardmember bonus for Venture or Venture X in the past 48 months. The Venture X terms block that card's bonus after a Venture X bonus inside the same window, and that footnote does not also name Venture.
