Best hotel credit cards in 2026
The best hotel card is the chain you actually sleep in. A free night at the wrong brand does not pay the annual fee.
Rates and fees in this guide were read on September 23, 2026. They change without notice, so open the product page linked in each pick for the current figure and the date it was read.
Short answer, verified on issuer pages on September 23, 2026: the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is the best hotel card if you stay at Hilton. The annual fee is $550, direct stays earn 14X, and a free-night certificate comes in year one and on renewal. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is the Marriott pick, at a $650 annual fee, with a free night only after renewal, capped at 85,000 points. If you do not stay in one chain, Chase Sapphire Preferred is the general card, at a $95 annual fee, with transfers to Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, and Wyndham.
FinanceRadar data: 36 of the 67 credit cards we verify charge no annual fee (54%), and the average annual fee is $142 (fees checked September to October 2026; we have logged 1,053 dated checks since August 2026).
The hotel card worth holding is the one whose free night matches a stay you will actually book. Hilton Honors Aspire is that card for Hilton: the highest direct-stay rate here, Diamond status, and a free-night certificate in year one and on renewal, which pays you back only if you would have bought that room. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is the Marriott card, and its free night arrives after renewal, under a point cap, so year one is the fee without the certificate.
If nights are split across chains, Chase Sapphire Preferred is the general travel card, with a Chase Travel hotel credit and transfers to Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, and Wyndham. It does not replace a Hilton cobrand, because Hilton is not a transfer partner. I ranked 10 cards: three Hilton cobrands, the Marriott cobrand, and six general travel cards. Hyatt, IHG, and Wyndham show up as Chase transfer partners, not as their own cards. See the credit card directory and best travel credit cards.

What a hotel credit card is
A hotel credit card pays more on hotel charges than on ordinary spend. Co-branded cards post points in one hotel program, so a Hilton balance cannot pay for a Marriott room. General travel cards bonus hotels in the issuer's own points, sometimes only inside the issuer's travel site, and that gate decides whether you earn the bonus.
The booking channel decides whether the bonus rate exists at all. American Express pays Aspire's top Hilton rate, and Surpass's next rate down, on a charge made directly with a Hilton portfolio property, including a Hilton reservation channel. A third-party booking does not get those extra points, and incidentals count only if they are billed to the room and paid with the card at checkout. A Hilton stay booked through an online travel agency is a base-rate stay, so the annual fee is harder to justify if that is how you already book.
Hilton points stay in Hilton and Marriott points stay in Marriott, so the cobrand is the chain you are stuck with. Chase's hotel transfer list on the Preferred page is IHG, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, and Wyndham, and Hilton is not on it, so a Hilton regular cannot replace Aspire with a transfer. If the decision is any trip rather than one chain, start with the travel card guide and use this page for the hotel line.
A free night has to beat the fee, on a stay you will book
On the credit card statistics page, published annual fees run from $0 to $895 as of September 23, 2026, and a hotel fee only earns its keep on a night you will actually book. The no-annual-fee Hilton card and Wells Fargo Autograph sit at the bottom of that range, for a guest who will not clear a fee with a certificate. American Express Platinum sits at the top as a prepaid-portal card, not a chain cobrand. The catalog average, $142, mixes those extremes, so it is the wrong number for one hotel card.
Aspire's resort credit is narrower than the headline people use to cover the annual fee. You can receive up to $200 in statement credits in each half of the year, January through June and July through December, on purchases made directly with participating Hilton resorts. Small Luxury Hotels of the World are excluded, advance-purchase and nonrefundable rates are excluded, and incidentals count only when charged to the room. A city Hilton, or a prepaid resort rate, does not spend that credit, so a guest who never visits a participating resort is paying for the free night and Diamond status alone.
Brilliant's free night is a renewal benefit, not a signup gift, so year one is the fee without the certificate. It posts 8 to 12 weeks after the renewal month, for one night at or under the point cap, and resort fees can still be due. The $25-a-month dining credit is restaurant spend, not a hotel folio, and a month you skip is lost.
Capital One Venture X and Chase Sapphire Reserve can beat a cobrand when you refuse one chain, and both still have a booking gate. Venture X's hotel bonus and annual travel credit run through Capital One Travel, and rewards are not earned on the credit. Reserve's higher hotel rate is for direct bookings, and a charge that takes the travel credit earns no points.
What to look for
A cobrand bonus applies on a direct booking with that chain, and a portal bonus applies only inside the issuer's travel site. Book on the hotel's own site and a portal card can fall to its everyday rate, so match the card to where you already reserve.
Aspire's certificate comes in year one and on renewal. Brilliant's comes after renewal, under a point cap, and does not offset the first fee. Surpass needs a calendar-year spend hurdle. The no-annual-fee Hilton free night is a welcome offer through January 13, 2027, not a certificate for later years.
Aspire's resort credit skips prepaid rates and city hotels. Surpass's quarterly Hilton credit is wider, and it still expires if the quarter passes unused. Preferred's hotel credit is Chase Travel only, and those dollars earn no points. Platinum's credit is prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection.
Aspire's Diamond status doubles base points on stays and adds space-available upgrades at select properties. Surpass's Gold status is a smaller stay bonus, plus a fifth award night on longer point stays. The no-fee Hilton card starts at Silver, with Gold only after a calendar-year spend hurdle. Brilliant includes Marriott Platinum Elite even when the free night is a year away.
Preferred, Reserve, Venture, Venture X, Autograph, and Brilliant print a bonus and a spend hurdle before you apply. Hilton and American Express published different Aspire point totals on September 23, 2026, so the application is the offer you will get. Surpass's Hilton headline leaves the spend to the application, and a roundup figure is not the terms.
None of the ten cards charges a foreign transaction fee, so a hotel night abroad does not pick up an extra percentage on the folio.
Autograph is the only card here with a published 0% intro APR on purchases, for 12 months, which fits a hotel bill that will sit unpaid. Every other card moves a carried balance into a variable APR in the high teens to high twenties from the first statement, and the points will not outrun that interest.
Preferred transfers to IHG, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, and Wyndham, which is the Hyatt path in this catalog because no Hyatt cobrand is listed here. Hilton cobrand points do not move onto that list, so Preferred is a different currency from Aspire.
Before you apply
If most of your nights are Hilton, start with Aspire or Surpass. Preferred cannot transfer into Hilton, so a Hilton guest who switches is choosing Chase points instead of Hilton points.
If most of your nights are Marriott, Brilliant is the cobrand in this catalog. The free night is a renewal benefit under a point cap, and resort fees can still be due, so do not apply for a certificate you need this year.
If you stay at Hyatt, IHG, or a mix of brands, Preferred is the hotel tool here. The transfer list is the product, and the Chase Travel hotel credit is a side benefit that does not earn points on the credited dollars.
If you will book hotels only inside Capital One Travel, compare Venture X with Venture. The higher fee buys the higher portal hotel rate, an annual travel credit instead of a first-year stays credit, and anniversary miles.
If you will not use a resort credit, a portal, or a renewal certificate, the no-annual-fee Hilton card or Autograph is the fit. Fee cards do not become cheap because the credits exist on a page you will not use.
Read cards by credit score if approval is the open question. Approval score cutoffs for these hotel cards are not printed, so this guide does not invent one. Capital One labels Venture X for excellent credit on the product page, which is the issuer's wording rather than a FICO cutoff anyone can quote.
Evaluation Checklist
Name the chain on your last four hotel receipts. If it is not Hilton, Aspire is the wrong tool, and if it is not Marriott, Brilliant's renewal certificate is the wrong tool.
For Aspire, confirm the resort is on Hilton's participating list, and skip an advance-purchase rate if you want the half-year credit to post.
For Brilliant, write down the renewal month, because the free night posts 8 to 12 weeks after that month, not when the account opens.
For Preferred and Reserve, treat a Chase Travel hotel charge that triggers a statement credit as points-free on those dollars.
For Venture X and Venture, price the same hotel inside Capital One Travel and on the property's own site, because the portal bonus applies only to the portal booking.
For Aspire and Surpass, read the welcome offer on the application the day you submit it. Hilton and American Express published different Aspire totals on September 23, 2026.
If you will carry the hotel bill, compare the rate after any intro window with the points you expect. Autograph is the only card here with a published 0% intro APR on purchases, and it lasts 12 months.
Rates and fees overview
Aspire when you will use a standard-room free night and a participating resort. Surpass when you want the next Hilton rate and Gold without Aspire's fee in year one.
Brilliant if you will renew and can use a free night at or under the certificate cap, because that certificate is not a first-year benefit.
Preferred if you want Hyatt, IHG, Marriott, or Wyndham transfers and a Chase Travel hotel credit, and you do not need Hilton points.
Venture X when the hotel is booked inside Capital One Travel. Venture for a lower fee and a first-year stays credit. Autograph or the no-fee Hilton card if you will not pay a fee.

Issuer product pages and application terms, September 23, 2026. Hilton welcome offers come from Hilton's card page and, where the totals differ, from American Express terms, and Aspire's two point totals are both first-party rather than a range you can choose.
Mistakes to Avoid
- ×
Booking Hilton through an online travel agency and expecting the cobrand bonus, when those rates need a Hilton reservation channel or a folio charged at the property.
- ×
Counting Brilliant's free night in the first year, when it arrives after renewal and cannot price a room above the certificate cap.
- ×
Picking Preferred to earn Hilton points, when Hilton is not on the transfer list and Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, and Wyndham are the hotel partners instead.
- ×
Using Platinum for a hotel you book and pay at the property, then looking for the prepaid-hotel rate, which applies to prepaid stays on Amex Travel.
- ×
Holding the no-annual-fee Hilton card for an annual certificate, when the free night Hilton is advertising is tied to the welcome offer that ends January 13, 2027.
- ×
Applying for Autograph again inside 48 months and expecting the 20,000-point bonus, which Wells Fargo can withhold even if the old account is closed and the balance is zero.
Tips
- →
If you stay at Hilton often enough to use one standard-room night and one participating resort, Aspire is the card. If you will not, Surpass in its first year, or the no-annual-fee Hilton card, is the cleaner Hilton product.
- →
If you stay at Marriott and you can wait until renewal for the certificate, Brilliant is the cobrand. If you need the night this year, the certificate is the wrong reason to apply.
- →
Preferred is the Hyatt card in this catalog, because there is no Hyatt cobrand here and World of Hyatt is on the transfer list. Transfer only points you will redeem, because a transfer is final.
- →
Put portal hotels on Venture X and direct hotels on the cobrand or on Reserve. Off the portal, Venture X earns its everyday rate.
- →
Confirm the Aspire and Surpass bonuses on the application you submit. A 200,000-point Hilton headline and a 175,000-point American Express terms page were both live on September 23, 2026.
- →
Score cutoffs are not on this page, because I left them out wherever the issuer left them off the hotel-card terms. See credit cards by credit score.
Red Flags to Watch For
- !
A resort credit that dies on a prepaid, nonrefundable rate, or at a city hotel that is not on the resort list, which leaves the annual fee uncovered on a downtown stay.
- !
A Marriott free night described as immediate, when the terms start the clock at renewal and year one has the fee without the certificate.
- !
A portal hotel bonus quoted as if it applies on the hotel's own site, when that bonus exists only inside the issuer's travel site.
- !
A Chase Travel hotel credit and a points total added together on the same dollars, when Chase says the qualifying purchase does not earn points.
- !
A Hilton welcome bonus copied from a roundup, when Hilton and American Express published different Aspire totals on September 23, 2026.
- !
A lounge visit counted on Brilliant because a benefits blurb mentions Priority Pass, while the product FAQ says the card does not currently have lounge access.
- !
An additional Brilliant or Aspire card treated as if it carried a second annual fee. Additional cards on those two products have no annual fee, while each Reserve authorized user costs $195.
The Bottom Line
Start with the chain on the folio, then the free night you will actually book. Aspire is the Hilton card, at a high annual fee, with the top direct-stay rate and a standard-room certificate in the first year and on renewal. Brilliant is the Marriott card, and the certificate waits until renewal, under a point cap, so it does not pay for a trip you need this year. Preferred is the general travel card when the nights are Hyatt, IHG, Marriott, Wyndham, or a mix, and Hilton is not a transfer partner.
Surpass is the Hilton step down, with a first-year fee waiver on the American Express product page that Hilton's comparison page does not echo, which matters if you want Gold before Aspire's fee. Venture X wins only when you book inside Capital One Travel. Autograph and the no-annual-fee Hilton card fit when the fee is the objection, and this is general information, not personalized financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best hotel credit card in 2026?
As of September 23, 2026, the best hotel card for Hilton stays is the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: 14X on direct Hilton charges, Hilton Diamond status, and a free-night certificate in the first year and again on renewal. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card is the Marriott pick, with 6X at Marriott hotels and a free night after renewal capped at 85,000 points. You do not receive that free night during the first year of the card. Chase Sapphire Preferred is the general travel card if you do not stay in one chain and you want transfers to Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, or Wyndham, and those points do not transfer to Hilton.
How much does a hotel credit card cost in 2026?
On issuer pages checked September 23, 2026, Hilton Aspire costs a $550 annual fee and Marriott Brilliant costs a $650 annual fee. Hilton Surpass costs a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150, on the American Express product page, the cheap year to test Hilton before the fee starts. Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture each cost a $95 annual fee, Venture X costs a $395 annual fee, and Sapphire Reserve costs a $795 annual fee plus $195 for each authorized user. The Platinum Card costs an $895 annual fee, while the Hilton Honors American Express Card and Wells Fargo Autograph charge no annual fee. Interest is separate if you carry a balance, so a revolved hotel bill costs more than the price of holding the card.
Is there a free hotel credit card?
Yes. The Hilton Honors American Express Card has no annual fee and pays 7X at Hilton hotels booked direct, with Hilton Silver status, which fits occasional Hilton stays rather than a guest chasing a yearly certificate. Through January 13, 2027, Hilton advertises a free-night reward plus 70,000 points after $2,000 in the first 6 months, and that free night is a welcome offer, not an annual certificate. Wells Fargo Autograph also has no annual fee and pays unlimited 3X on hotels, including discount travel sites, with 20,000 bonus points after $1,000 in three months. Neither card waives interest, and after Autograph's intro year the purchase rate steps up, so a carried hotel bill is not free.
Is the Marriott Brilliant card better than the Hilton Aspire card?
Only when the nights are Marriott, because the points do not move between the programs. Brilliant's free night arrives after renewal, for a stay at or under the certificate cap, and resort fees can still be due. Aspire pays its direct Hilton rate, with a standard-room certificate in the first year and on renewal, so a Hilton guest can use the night before the card renews. The annual fees differ by enough that the chain decides the winner, and a Marriott guest does not get Hilton Diamond from Aspire.
Does Chase Sapphire Preferred earn points on hotels?
Yes. Sapphire Preferred earns 5x points on hotels bought through Chase Travel and 2x on other travel, including hotels booked outside that site, so a direct booking still earns at the lower rate. It credits as much as $100 back each account anniversary year on Chase Travel hotel stays, and those dollars do not earn points, so the credit and the points do not stack. Points transfer to IHG, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, and Wyndham, and they do not transfer to Hilton. The bonus is 75,000 points after $5,000 in the first 3 months.
Does the Amex Platinum card pay 5X on any hotel?
No. The Platinum Card pays 5X Membership Rewards points on prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com. A reservation on the hotel's own site does not get that rate, so a chain-site booking is the wrong use of this card. The hotel credit is up to $600 a year, in two half-year credits, on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through Amex Travel. The Hotel Collection requires two nights, which rules out a one-night city stay. Hilton Gold and Marriott Gold are enrollment benefits, and Hilton Gold is an 80% bonus on base points, which is not Aspire's Diamond status.
What APR do these hotel cards charge if you carry a balance?
Aspire, Surpass, and Brilliant list 19.49% to 28.49% variable on application terms, dated May 20, 2026 for Brilliant, June 5, 2026 for Aspire, and June 14, 2026 for Surpass. Sapphire Preferred is 19.24% to 27.49% variable, and Sapphire Reserve is 19.49% to 27.99% variable. Venture and Venture X are 19.49% to 28.49% variable. Autograph opens with a 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases, and after that the variable rate is 18.74%, 24.74%, or 28.74%. Platinum's Pay Over Time rate on eligible charges is 19.74% to 28.74% variable. The no-annual-fee Hilton card's purchase APR is printed on the application rather than beside the public benefits, so it is not quoted here. All of these are issuer figures as of September 23, 2026.
