Good to know before you file

  • The state return is not free: $15.99 for each state. Only the federal return is free.
  • Paying the fees out of your refund costs an extra $24.99 on top of what you ordered, and needs a refund large enough to cover it. Paying by card costs nothing extra.
  • Free email and in-app support is included, but live chat and priority help need the $7.99 Deluxe Support. Pro Support is $64.99, and you still prepare and sign the return yourself.
  • Audit Defense is a separate $19.99 add-on governed by its own membership agreement. Read the exclusions and the enrollment deadline before you rely on it.
  • Not for foreign earned income, nonresident alien returns, or people living outside the U.S. when they file. Check the vendor's unsupported list before you start.
FreeTaxUSA is a web-based tax filing service from TaxHawk, Inc. Its pitch is simple: your federal return is free no matter how complicated it gets. That covers a plain W-2 return, but also itemized deductions, stock and crypto sales, rental income, and freelance income reported on Schedule C (the form for self-employment). What you pay for is the state return, $15.99 for each state, and for optional extras such as Deluxe Support at $7.99. The prices on this page are the ones FreeTaxUSA posted for tax year 2025, the returns filed in 2026, and we read them on its own site on October 14, 2026. The vendor posts the next season's prices around December or January, and we will re-check this page then. The trade-off is hand-holding. You prepare the return yourself with step-by-step questions. Live help from a tax professional is a paid add-on (Pro Support, $64.99), and even then you still prepare and sign the return. We did not find a separate phone app. If you would rather hand the whole thing to a person, a different product fits better.
