Good to know before you file
- Free Online is for simple returns only. H&R Block says approximately 52% of filers qualify. Itemizing, freelance income, rental income, stock or crypto sales or an HSA need a paid plan.
- The paid plans charge $49 for each state on top of the federal price. Only Free Online has a $0 state return.
- Unlimited expert help comes with Deluxe, Premium and Self-Employed, but not Free Online. Having a tax professional review, sign and file your return costs extra: $75 on Free Online, $65 on Deluxe and $95 on Premium and Self-Employed.
- Audit representation is a separate paid add-on (Worry-Free Audit Support) whose price is not shown on the pages we read. The audit help that is included is guidance only.
- Paying H&R Block out of your refund adds a $42 Refund Transfer fee.
- In January 2025 the FTC finalized an order against H&R Block over its "free" advertising and over making customers contact support to downgrade a product and then deleting their entered data. It paid $7 million, must say what share of taxpayers qualify when it advertises "free", and must let customers downgrade without calling support.
