Capital One Venture X vs Venture (2026)

Venture X is worth the extra fee when you book $300 a year through Capital One Travel. The fees are $395 and $95 as of September 23, 2026.

Venture X is worth the extra fee when you book the annual Capital One Travel credit through the portal. As of September 23, 2026, Venture X costs $395 a year and Venture costs $95. The $300 difference matches that credit, so the higher card can cost the same cash if you use it.

People who will not book there should keep Venture, which pays the same everyday miles without a credit to track. Venture X fits the primary cardholder who will use the portal and wants lounge access.

FinanceRadar data: the average annual fee across the 37 credit cards we verify is $200 as of September 23, 2026, and 18 of them (49%) charge no annual fee (credit card statistics). Venture sits under that average, so it is the smaller bet when a portal booking is not already on your calendar. Venture X sits above it, so the credit has to be a trip you would have paid for anyway. Every card in that set advertises a welcome bonus, which means the shared miles offer does not separate these two.

This comparison covers the consumer cards only, because Capital One also sells business versions with different guest rules. Figures below are from the Venture X card page, the Venture card page, Capital One's miles guide dated March 24, 2026, and the Venture X application terms, checked September 23, 2026.

Venture X wins on net fee if you use the credit

The fee test is the credit, not the sticker. Use the full annual credit on a Capital One Travel booking you would have made anyway, and the cash left on the higher fee matches Venture for that year. Skip the portal, and you pay the entire higher fee for lounges and richer portal rates you may never use. Capital One does not pay rewards on the credited portion, so those dollars cannot earn miles on top of the credit.

Venture's credit is a one-time stays offer, and it ends after the first year. The card page labels the current package a limited-time offer: a one-time stays credit at that same cap, for hotels and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel, plus the miles bonus. It expires one year after account opening, it does not renew, and a canceled stay restores it only if it has not expired.

Flights do not qualify, so an airfare-only booking in the portal gets nothing from it. After year one, Venture is the annual fee with no travel credit and no anniversary miles.

Venture X's credit renews, which is the ongoing reason to pay more. Eligible primary cardholders receive it each year for purchases made through Capital One Travel, and each credit expires on the next account-open anniversary. It can cover a flight, a hotel, a vacation rental, or a rental car inside that portal, in one booking or several.

The account has to stay open and in good standing. The credit fails in any year you book direct with the airline or hotel instead.

Starting on the first anniversary, Venture X also pays 10,000 bonus miles. The application terms price travel redemptions at 100 miles per dollar: a trip's cost, including taxes and fees, times 100. At that rate the anniversary miles are worth $100 toward a qualifying travel purchase.

They do not post in year one, and they are not a check that arrives with the fee. Redeemed against a travel charge within 90 days, they become an account credit, and spent in Capital One Travel they pay for a new booking.

Everyday earning is a tie, and Venture X wins portal trips

Both cards earn 2X on purchases outside the portal, with no annual cap printed in the rewards terms. Groceries, gas, restaurants, and bills do not pay a higher rate on the more expensive card. If those categories are why you want a card, the fee gap buys nothing, and the cash back card guide is the closer comparison.

The split shows up only inside Capital One Travel, on the earn table in Capital One's March 24, 2026 miles guide. Venture X earns 10X on hotels and rental cars booked there, and a higher rate on flights than Venture, which stays at the everyday rate on those flights. Vacation rentals and activities pay the same rate on both cards, so that category does not justify the fee.

A hotel, car, or flight you book in the portal favors Venture X. The same flight on the airline's site earns the everyday rate on either card.

Hotel incidentals, upgrades, and other charges made outside the portal drop to the everyday rate even if the room was booked in Capital One Travel, so a room-service bill does not keep the portal bonus. Cash advances, balance transfers, and checks do not earn miles at all. There is no cap on purchase miles while the account stays open, and miles do not expire for the life of the account. Close the account, or lose good standing, and unredeemed miles can disappear.

Venture X wins lounges, and guests are no longer free

Lounge access is a Venture X benefit, and Venture does not include it, so the cheaper card is the wrong pick for a club. Capital One's lounge terms, last updated July 8, 2026, give the primary Venture X cardholder complimentary entry to Capital One Lounges and Landings, plus participating Priority Pass lounges after enrollment. The card page describes that network as 1,300+ lounges.

You need a same-day boarding pass with a confirmed seat, generally within three hours of departure, and standby tickets are excluded. Access depends on space, so a long connection can leave the fee buying a club you cannot enter.

Additional cardholders do not get that entry for free. Adding a user costs nothing, but lounge access for that person is a separate $125 a year, charged to the primary card, and it renews unless you cancel it. Accounts can have up to four additional cardholders, so skip the add-on if nobody else will use a lounge, and price it on top of the annual fee if a second person needs entry.

Without the spend threshold, every guest is cash on top of the fee. Capital One Lounge and Landing guests are $45 a visit at age 18 or older and $25 at 17 or under, and children under two are free.

Complimentary guests require at least $75,000 in net purchases on the Venture X account in a calendar year, then two guests at a Capital One Lounge and one at a Landing. That window skips Priority Pass, where guests are $35 each per visit even after you clear the spend bar. A few paid visits can eat the credit that was supposed to offset the higher fee.

Guest access earned on July 1, 2026 lasts through January 31, 2028, in Capital One's own example, so do not assume it resets each January. Venture cardholders can buy Lounge passes at the same guest rates, which is a paid visit, not a membership.

The welcome bonus is the same spend with different rules

Both public offers are 75,000 miles after $4,000 in purchases in the first three months, and both say the bonus posts within two billing cycles. The Venture page prices that package, miles plus the first-year stays credit, at more than $1,000 in travel value. The same redemption rate prices the miles alone the same way on either card, so the extra value on Venture's page is the stays credit, and that credit does not come back.

Eligibility is not symmetric, which changes the order if you want both bonuses. Venture's card-page terms say you are not eligible if you received a new cardmember bonus for Venture or for Venture X in the past 48 months. Venture X's travel-card terms and application terms block the bonus if you received a Venture X bonus in that window, and they do not list a Venture bonus as a reason to deny it. Apply for Venture first if you want a shot at both, because a Venture X bonus first can close Venture's offer for four years.

Capital One's April 2, 2026 comparison says you may be able to upgrade from Venture to Venture X after at least a year, by checking offers inside the account. That article does not say an upgrade pays a new cardmember bonus, so do not count on one if you already hold Venture. Both the card page and the comparison list excellent credit, and neither prints a numeric score cutoff. Other products' cutoffs are in the cards by credit score guide.

Shared perks do not decide the fee

A tie does not justify the higher fee. Both cards reimburse Global Entry or TSA PreCheck up to the same cap, on the same schedule, when you charge the application fee, so that credit does not pick a winner. Both include a $50 Lifestyle Collection experience credit on a Capital One Travel stay, plus Wi-Fi and, when available, a room upgrade, early check-in, and late checkout. Both earn the same rate on Capital One Entertainment tickets bought on that platform. Both can enroll in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, Venture at Five Star and Venture X at President's Circle, and that offer can change, so status matters only if you already rent Hertz.

Venture X adds a Premier Collection stay with a larger experience credit and breakfast for two, a PRIOR subscription the card page values at $149, and 50% off a Cultivist Enthusiast membership for up to two years. Count them only if you would have paid anyway, because they do not replace the travel credit. Capital One's September 8, 2026 article values that discount at up to $440, with a member and a guest at 60 museums, and adds a six-month Vinous subscription. Cultivist auto-renews and charges the card unless you cancel, so a forgotten renewal is a new bill.

Cover a past travel purchase within 90 days at 100 miles per dollar when the merchant codes as an airline, hotel, rail line, car rental, cruise, taxi, bus, travel agent, or timeshare. That is the rate that makes the anniversary miles match the fee math. It fails if the charge is itemized separately or codes as something else, because Capital One does not control those codes and cannot combine separate lines.

You can also book in the portal or transfer miles. The Venture X page says 15 or more programs, and rates vary by partner. Gift cards, cash, Amazon.com, and PayPal use rates Capital One can change. Do not judge the higher fee by those weaker exits.

Carrying a balance is a poor use of either card. Both card pages print a variable purchase APR of 19.49% to 28.49%, and neither lists a 0% introductory purchase APR. FinanceRadar data: 18 of the 37 credit cards we verify offer a 0% intro APR period (49%, as of September 23, 2026, on the same statistics page). These two sit outside that group, so interest can cost more than a year of everyday miles.

The due date is at least 25 days after the cycle closes, and new purchases avoid interest when the previous balance is paid in full by then. Miss that date and interest can erase the welcome miles. Those purchase APRs are on the credit card APR statistics page.

Cellphone protection is on Venture X only: reimbursement up to $800 if you pay the phone bill with the card and the phone is stolen or damaged. Capital One does not publish the deductible as a dollar amount.

The September 8 article also names trip cancellation, return protection, an extended warranty, travel accident insurance, and an auto rental waiver, without dollar caps. Venture's page names the accident insurance and the rental waiver. None of that closes the fee gap by itself.

Who should pick which card

Pick Venture if you will pay the statement in full, you want miles on ordinary spend, and you will not book through Capital One Travel often enough to use a credit. One Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee can exceed the annual fee in the year you apply, and then that credit is gone for four years, so it is a one-time offset rather than a reason to keep the card. If any annual fee is the wrong shape, the no-annual-fee credit card guide includes VentureOne, which Capital One prices at no annual fee with 1.25X miles on general purchases. If the paid Venture's fee is the sticking point, the no-fee travel cards include the VentureOne, which earns 1.25 miles on everything.

Pick Venture X if you already book at least one trip a year in Capital One Travel, you want the primary cardholder's lounge entry, and you will not add paid guests or a second lounge membership you do not need. It is a poor fit if you would book the portal only to rescue the fee, because portal prices and inventory can differ from the airline or hotel site, and a worse fare can cost more than the credit. The wider travel-card set is in the travel credit card guide, and the catalog ranking is best credit cards.

Skip both cards if you need to float a balance, because interest can cost more than a year of miles. If the real choice is another issuer's points card, read Venture vs Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve vs Amex Platinum vs Venture X, and Sapphire Preferred vs Amex Gold. Capital One's own review module, on the card pages as of September 23, 2026, shows Venture at 4.6 from 10,899 reviews (93% recommend) and Venture X at 4.2 from 1,307 reviews (79% recommend). Those are reviews on Capital One's site, not a FinanceRadar sample, and a higher star rating does not shrink the fee.

Gotchas that change the math

The travel credit and the stays credit suppress miles on the covered part, so do not add earn on dollars the credit already paid. A Venture X credit that expires on the anniversary is gone, and a canceled booking does not restore an expired credit, so a late rebook loses the benefit. Venture's first-year credit never returns as an annual benefit.

A Priority Pass guest is a separate charge the spend threshold does not erase, on top of the annual fee. The lounge fee for an additional cardholder renews on its own date, which can differ from the card anniversary, and that fee earns no miles, so cancel it when the second person stops traveling.

Capital One Travel's flight tools are shared, so they do not pick a winner between these cards. Price prediction, price-drop protection, price watch, and the price-match guarantee may not be available on every booking and can add fees, so a portal flight is not automatically cheaper. Both cards also advertise no foreign transaction fee and no blackout dates. Miles still depend on how you redeem them, and a partner transfer can be worth more or less than the travel redemption rate once the other program's rules apply.

How we compared

We read Capital One's consumer Venture and Venture X card pages, the miles guide dated March 24, 2026, the Venture versus Venture X article dated April 2, 2026, the Venture X article dated September 8, 2026, the Venture X application terms, and the lounge terms last updated July 8, 2026.

The check for this pairing was September 23, 2026, and we did not open accounts or book travel, so this is not a hands-on test. Rank follows who will use the credit and the lounge, with no paid placement, and the page is general information rather than advice for one credit file. If a link here pays Financeradar a commission, that payment does not change which card comes out ahead (how we make money). How the catalog scores cards is explained on how we rate.

FAQ

Is the Capital One Venture X worth it over the Venture card?

Yes, when you will use the annual Capital One Travel credit on a booking you would have made anyway. As of September 23, 2026, that credit is the same size as the fee gap, so the cash cost can match Venture if you spend it. If you will not book in the portal, Venture is the better card, because you skip the higher fee and still earn the everyday rate on ordinary spend.

What are the annual fees on Venture X and Venture in 2026?

Venture X is $395 a year and Venture is $95 a year, as printed on Capital One's card pages on September 23, 2026. Venture X can add $125 a year for each additional cardholder who needs lounge access, and adding that person without lounge access has no fee. Venture has no complimentary lounge access, so the lower fee cannot buy the club.

What is the welcome bonus on Venture X vs Venture?

Both public offers are 75,000 miles after you spend $4,000 in the first three months, and the bonus posts within two billing cycles, so the headline miles do not favor the higher fee. Venture's page labels the package limited-time and adds a first-year stays credit that does not renew. A Venture or Venture X bonus in the past 48 months blocks Venture's offer. A Venture X bonus in that window blocks Venture X, and a Venture bonus does not, so open Venture first if you want both.

Does the Venture card include lounge access?

No. Complimentary Capital One Lounge, Landing, and Priority Pass entry is for the Venture X primary cardholder after enrollment, and space is not guaranteed. Venture cardholders can buy a Lounge pass at a discount, which is a paid visit rather than a membership. Venture X guests are paid too, unless the account spends at least $75,000 in net purchases in a calendar year, and Priority Pass guests stay at $35 even then.

Are Venture X anniversary miles worth $100?

Toward a qualifying travel purchase, yes, at the rate in the Venture X application terms. Those terms multiply the travel cost by 100, so 10,000 miles cover $100, and the miles start on the first anniversary rather than in year one. Cash and gift-card redemptions use other rates that Capital One can change, so use the travel rate when you judge the fee.

Do Venture or Venture X charge a foreign transaction fee?

Neither card charges a foreign transaction fee, on both card pages as of September 23, 2026. A purchase abroad still earns the everyday rate unless it is a Capital One Travel or Entertainment booking at a higher rate. Covering that charge with miles later still depends on the merchant category code, so a foreign dinner may not qualify.

What is the APR if you carry a balance on either Venture card?

Both card pages print a variable purchase APR of 19.49% to 28.49%, and neither lists a 0% introductory purchase APR. These cards fit people who pay in full, because interest can cost more than a year of miles. New purchases avoid interest when the previous balance is paid in full by the due date, at least 25 days after the cycle closes.
