Is the Capital One Venture X Worth It in 2026

Worth the $395 fee when you use the full $300 Capital One Travel credit and value the later anniversary miles the way Capital One prices them. Skip the portal and that credit is zero.

The Capital One Venture X is worth the annual fee when you will book through Capital One Travel and pay the statement in full. As of September 23, 2026, Capital One lists the fee at $395 and a $300 annual travel credit that works only inside Capital One Travel. Use the full credit and $95 of the fee is still uncovered until anniversary miles arrive. Skip the portal and that credit never posts, so the fee buys lounges and the everyday mile rate with no dollar offset.

FinanceRadar data: the average annual fee across the 37 credit cards we verify is $200, 18 of those 37 charge no annual fee (49%), and 18 advertise a 0% introductory APR (49%), as of September 23, 2026 (credit card statistics). Venture X sits above that average, so the credit has to be a trip you would have paid for anyway. The card page does not advertise an introductory rate, so a revolving balance costs more here than on the cards in that set that waive interest for a while. The published fee range in the same set runs from $0 to $895.

The useful question is whether you will spend the travel credit before it expires. Someone who already books a flight or hotel in Capital One Travel can put that credit against the fee. Someone who books only on airline and hotel sites should leave the card, because those bookings never touch the credit and they earn only the everyday mile rate.

The credit covers most of the fee, not all of it

The annual travel credit is a checkout balance inside Capital One Travel, not cash you can spend on an airline site. On the miles card page, checked September 23, 2026, eligible primary account holders receive it each year for purchases made through Capital One Travel. It can cover one booking or several, and it expires on the next account-open anniversary, so a trip you were saving it for does not keep the value past that date.

A canceled booking restores the credit only if it has not expired, so a rebooking after the anniversary finds the old balance gone. Rewards are not earned on the amount the credit pays, which means those portal dollars offset the fee and do not also earn miles. That leaves the rest of the annual fee in any year where the credit is the only dollar offset.

Anniversary miles do not close the gap in the opening year. Capital One's Venture X rewards footnote says you earn 10,000 bonus miles after each anniversary, starting with the first one, so they are absent when the fee is first charged. The consumer footnote does not print a dollar value for them. The Venture X Business line on that rewards page calls the anniversary bonus equal to $100 toward travel, and the Venture card page calls 52,800 miles a $528 value, which is one cent per mile.

At that published rate, the credit plus the later anniversary miles come to $400, $5 over the fee. Treat that $5 as Capital One's published travel value, not as a second statement credit, and not as cash before the first anniversary.

What you actually captureDollar offsetAgainst the fee

Full travel credit, and you never book in the portal$0You still owe the fee
From the first anniversary: full credit plus 10,000 miles at the published one-cent travel value$400Clears the fee by $5
Credit only partly used, any yearWhatever posted at checkoutThe unused remainder expires on the anniversary

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck is not a line in that table, and it should not be the reason you take the fee. The Venture card's benefit footnote, which names Venture X, offers a statement credit of up to $120, once per account every four years, for whichever application you pay first. A credit on that cycle does not shrink this year's fee.

Cell phone reimbursement and the PRIOR subscription fail the same test. The Venture X page caps cell phone reimbursement at $800 after a covered loss, which is insurance after a loss, not a credit that posts every year. The complimentary PRIOR subscription is priced on that page at a $149 value and still requires enrollment, so it is a perk you activate, not a statement credit against the annual fee.

Where the mile rates actually change

Bookings outside Capital One Travel earn 2 miles per dollar, including a hotel or flight you reserve on the provider's own site. The card page, checked the same day, lists 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, and 5 miles per dollar on flights and vacation rentals booked there. The higher fee therefore buys nothing on a booking you make at the airline or hotel itself.

Capital One Entertainment tickets on Capital One's ticketing platform earn that same flight rate. A cardholder pre-sale, or a ticket through Capital One Hall or Capital One Arena, is excluded, so those shows do not pick up the boost.

Hotel charges you add at the property are not the reservation made in Capital One Travel, so they earn the everyday rate rather than the hotel bonus.

Capital One publishes a price-match rule that is narrow. Venture X terms cover eligible flights, hotels, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel when you find a qualifying cheaper itinerary and tell Capital One within 24 hours. If it applies, the difference comes back as a travel credit, not as cash off the annual fee, so a match does not lower the card's cost.

Capital One also says price prediction has produced average savings of 15% on flights, that savings vary, and that the tools are not on every booking. A cheaper fare noticed on day two is not a match.

Premier Collection and Lifestyle Collection credits are stay perks, not fee offsets. Premier bookings through Capital One Travel can include an experience credit of up to $100 at the hotel or on a vacation-rental experience, plus daily breakfast for two, while Lifestyle bookings are up to $50. The stay has to be in the cardholder's name, through Capital One Travel, with the cardholder on the trip. A hotel's own website does not trigger them, and a night booked only to collect the credit is new spending rather than a recovery of the annual fee.

Miles do not expire for the life of the account, and the card page says there are no blackout dates, so a saved mile can still pay for a later trip. You can transfer miles to 15 or more loyalty programs, but a finished transfer follows the other program's rules, and Capital One says redemption rates may vary. A statement credit against a travel purchase has to be redeemed within 90 days of the date that purchase posts. A mile you never redeem does not pay the fee.

Lounges are complimentary for one person

Primary cardholders get in, and additional cardholders do not unless you pay. Lounge terms updated July 8, 2026 give the primary cardholder complimentary access to Capital One Lounges and Landings, and to participating Priority Pass lounges after enrollment. Authorized users and account managers do not get that access with the card.

The primary cardholder can buy it for $125 per additional cardholder per year. That add-on renews until canceled, is charged to the primary card, does not earn rewards, and does not count toward a spending bonus, so it sits on top of the annual fee.

Up to four additional cardholders can be on a consumer Venture X account, and adding someone with no lounge access still has no separate card fee, so another person can carry the card without buying a club seat. If a second adult needs to get in, the add-on sits on top of the annual fee. The travel card guide compares lounge access across travel cards.

Guests are a second bill unless you spend a lot. Without that spend, a guest at a Capital One Lounge or Landing is $45 if they are 18 or older and $25 if they are 17 or under, and children under two are free. A Priority Pass guest is $35 per visit, and the consumer card does not include complimentary Priority Pass guests. The business version does include two complimentary Priority Pass guests, so "free guests" may be the business terms, not this card.

Complimentary guests start at $75,000 of purchases in a calendar year, across every card on the account, net of returns. Cash advances, balance transfers, and account fees, including the lounge add-on, do not count, so paying the annual fee does not move you closer to free guests. Hit the threshold and you can bring up to two complimentary guests into Capital One Lounges and one into Capital One Landings. That guest benefit does not apply at Priority Pass, where guests stay paid even after you clear the bar.

The guest benefit lasts through the following calendar year and until January 31 of the year after that. Access still requires a same-day boarding pass with a confirmed seat, generally within three hours of departure, and Capital One says space is not guaranteed. A denied visit does not refund the annual fee.

Who the fee fits, and who should leave it

Keep Venture X if you already book at least one Capital One Travel trip a year large enough to absorb the full credit, you will pay the statement in full, and the person who flies is the primary cardholder. Excellent credit is the level printed on the card page, so a thinner file is outside that offer. The first year still leaves a gap after the credit. From the first anniversary, the published one-cent value of the anniversary miles turns that gap into a small surplus, and only if the credit is used again.

Leave it if you will not use the portal. The credit expires unused, the higher mile rates never start, and you are paying for lounges plus an everyday rate a cheaper card in this family already pays. Leave it if a second adult needs lounge access: that is another $125 a year, on top of the annual fee, for each person you add.

Leave it if you carry a balance, because the purchase APR on the card page is 19.49% to 28.49% variable, interest applies if you do not pay in full by the due date, and the page lists no introductory rate. Revolving costs on the cards we track are in the credit card APR report.

For the same everyday mile rate at a lower fee, Capital One Venture lists a $95 annual fee on its card page the same day, with 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. The Venture offer is a one-time stays credit for hotels and vacation rentals, the same dollar cap as this card's annual travel credit, expiring one year after account opening, plus the same mile bonus after the same spend in the first three months. That stays credit does not renew, and Venture has no complimentary Capital One Lounge access, so it fits a reader who wants the everyday mile rate and will not use lounges. The full pairing is on Venture X versus Venture.

For no annual fee, VentureOne lists a $0 annual fee, unlimited 1.25 miles per dollar, and 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. The public offer is 20,000 bonus miles after $500 in the first three months, and a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, then 18.49% to 28.49% variable. VentureOne is the card in this family that matches the no-annual-fee slice of the set we verify, which is the comparison if the travel credit will sit unused. The no-annual-fee guide and the full ranking show the wider set.

A higher fee buys a travel credit that is not locked to one portal. Chase Sapphire Reserve lists a $795 annual fee, and $195 for each authorized user, on its card page as of September 23, 2026. Chase applies that credit to purchases in the travel category, so a flight on the airline's own site can still trigger it.

The Platinum Card from American Express lists an $895 annual fee for the basic card. Those cards fit a longer credit list, and they are the wrong comparison if you only want a lower annual fee, which is the split in Reserve versus Platinum versus Venture X. Straight cash back, without a portal, is the cash back guide. Credit levels for other cards are in the cards-by-score guide.

The welcome offer is not an annual refund

Do not underwrite a recurring fee with a one-time bonus. On September 23, 2026, the miles card page offers Venture X primary account holders 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in purchases within the first three months. The bonus is available through that page and may disappear if you leave it.

Miles post within two billing cycles after you qualify. You are not eligible if you received a new Venture X cardmember bonus in the past 48 months, so a repeat applicant gets no second bonus.

A prior Venture bonus follows a different rule than this card's bonus. The Venture footnote blocks a new Venture bonus if you received a Venture or Venture X bonus in that window, while the Venture X footnote names only a prior Venture X bonus. On that footnote a prior Venture bonus does not block this card, while this card's bonus can block a later Venture bonus, so application order decides whether a second bonus exists.

At the one-cent travel value printed on the Venture card page, 75,000 miles are $750 toward travel. That sum can cover a first-year gap after the travel credit, and it does not repeat, so later years depend on the credit and the anniversary miles.

The VentureOne footnote is stricter if you plan to move down later. A new VentureOne bonus is blocked if you received a VentureOne, Venture, or Venture X new-cardmember bonus in the past 48 months, so this bonus can erase a later no-fee bonus. Capital One also says miles depend on your credit limit and purchase activity. A limit that cannot absorb the required spend means the bonus never starts, and the travel credit is the only offset left.

How we checked

We read Capital One's Venture X card page, the miles and travel rewards page (including the Venture X, Venture, and Venture X Business footnotes), the Venture and VentureOne card pages, and the lounge terms last updated July 8, 2026. The same day we read Chase's Sapphire Reserve page and American Express's Platinum card page for the fees named above. The check was September 23, 2026, and we did not apply for the card or visit a lounge.

FAQ

Is the Capital One Venture X worth the annual fee in 2026?

It is worth the fee when you use the full Capital One Travel credit and, from the first anniversary, value the anniversary miles at the rate Capital One prints. As of September 23, 2026, the card page lists the fee at $395 and the annual credit at $300, only at Capital One Travel checkout. In the first year that credit leaves $95 uncovered, because anniversary miles start on the first anniversary. At the one-cent value Capital One prints elsewhere, the credit plus those miles come to $400, and skipping the portal means the credit does not post.

How much is the Venture X annual fee in 2026?

Capital One lists $395 on the Venture X card page, checked September 23, 2026. There is no separate annual fee to add an additional cardholder without lounge access, so a second card for the mile rate does not raise the price. Lounge access for each additional cardholder is a separate $125 a year under the lounge terms, and that charge renews until you cancel it. The primary cardholder's lounge access is already included, so the household cost depends on who else needs to enter.

Does the travel credit cover the whole Venture X fee?

The miles card page describes an annual Capital One Travel credit that can be split across bookings, expires on the next account anniversary, and does not earn miles on the portion it pays. A canceled trip restores the credit only while it is still unexpired. The later anniversary miles are what Capital One prices against the remainder, at the published one-cent travel value, and they are not in the first year, so the credit alone does not equal the fee then.

When do Venture X anniversary miles show up on the account?

You earn 10,000 bonus miles after each anniversary, starting with the first anniversary, and Capital One applies them once you qualify. They do nothing for the fee in the opening year, and the consumer footnote does not call them a dollar credit.

The Venture X Business footnote on the same rewards page calls that mile count equal to $100 toward travel. The Venture card page prices the same miles at one cent, using 52,800 miles as a $528 value. Use that rate as Capital One's published travel value, not as cash paid with the annual fee.

Do authorized users get complimentary Venture X lounge access?

Authorized users do not get in unless the primary cardholder pays for that access. Lounge terms updated July 8, 2026 say additional cardholders, including authorized users and account managers, do not have complimentary access to Capital One Lounges, Landings, or Priority Pass. Access costs $125 per person per year, for up to four additional cardholders.

Without the $75,000 annual purchase threshold, guests are $45 or $25 at Capital One Lounges and Landings, by age, and $35 at Priority Pass. Children under two are free, and a denied seat does not refund the fee.

What APR does Venture X charge if you carry a balance?

The card page lists a purchase APR of 19.49% to 28.49% variable, checked September 23, 2026, and it does not advertise a 0% introductory APR. Interest hits unpaid purchases when the balance is not paid in full by the due date, so revolving the welcome-offer spend can cost more than the first-year gap the travel credit leaves. VentureOne does advertise an introductory window of 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, which is the alternative if you cannot pay this card in full.

Is this Venture X review personal financial advice for you?

It is general information about published fees, credits, and rates, checked on Capital One, Chase, and American Express pages on September 23, 2026, not a recommendation for one credit file. Whether you are approved, where your APR lands inside the published range, and whether a booking qualifies for the travel credit are decisions for the issuer, not for this article. The fee math holds only if you will use the portal credit and pay the statement in full.
