Marcus vs Ally: Same $0 Fee, Different Rate and Access
Marcus pays 3.40% APY as of September 7, 2026. Ally pays 3.00% as of September 2. Both $0 fee, $0 minimum. Marcus wins unless you need Ally's checking pair.
Verdict: Marcus Online Savings is the better savings account of the two. Same $0 monthly fee, same $0 minimum, 3.40% APY as of September 7, 2026 versus Ally at 3.00% as of September 2, 2026. Take Ally instead only if you need the checking pair, buckets, or an ATM card on this relationship.
Of the 21 published high-yield savings accounts we verify, these two are in the small group with no promo on the headline rate, no deposit habit, no balance floor, and a $0 monthly fee. That is the point of the comparison. It is not a race for 4%.
On $10,000, 40 basis points is about $40 a year. On $50,000 it is about $200. That is real money. It is also less than one bounced-fee story, and less than the value of Ally's spending account if you actually use it.
The FDIC national savings average is 0.38% as of August 17, 2026. Both of these accounts clear that by a lot. Neither is Forbright at 4.15% or Pibank at 4.10%. Those names lead the HYSA table and both have a catch. Marcus vs Ally is the fork after you have decided you will not rate-chase.
This is not financial advice. APYs are variable. Read the bank page before you wire.

| FDIC | Direct, Goldman Sachs Bank USA, $250,000 | Direct, Ally Bank, $250,000 |
| ATM card | No | Via the Ally spending account, Allpoint |
| Checking sibling | None in our Marcus row | Yes |
| Transfers | Same-day out, $100,000 or less, if you submit by noon ET on a business day | Standard ACH; $0 for standard and expedited ACH |
| Extra | Referral can add 1.00% for 3 months (Marcus footnote: 3.65% combined if the base rate holds) | Buckets, round-ups, Surprise Savings; 10 limited withdrawals per statement cycle |
| Catch on the headline APY | None. Referral boost is optional and temporary. | None on the rate. The 10-withdrawal cap is an account rule, not an APY gate. |
Marcus stamps the 3.40% to September 7, 2026 on its own page. Ally stamps 3% to September 2, 2026. We use those dates, not a third-party aggregator.
Forty dollars is the rate argument
Compound a year at 3.40% versus 3.00% on a balance that does not move:
- $5,000: about $20
- $10,000: about $40
- $25,000: about $100
- $50,000: about $200
If this account is an emergency fund you will not touch, Marcus pays you to do nothing extra. If this account is where rent money sits for 18 days, Ally's plumbing matters more than $3 that month.
Marcus will process transfers of $100,000 or less made by 12 pm ET on a business day, by 5 pm ET that day. Incoming transfers start earning the day Marcus receives the request. That is the Goldman Sachs pitch: park it, move it, do not visit a branch. There is no ATM card. There is no cash deposit. There is no Marcus checking product in our catalog. If you need a debit card on the same login, you are in the wrong row.
Ally is a digital bank with a savings product attached to a real spending account. Buckets split one balance into labeled piles without opening six accounts. Round-ups and Surprise Savings move leftover checking dollars across automatically. 24/7 support is a person. The cost of that kit, versus Marcus, is 40 basis points on whatever you leave in savings.
Ally also limits certain withdrawals and transfers from savings to 10 per statement cycle. There is no fee for going over. Ally says it will close the account if you exceed the limit on more than an occasional basis. If you treat savings like a checking account, you will hit that rule. Marcus does not advertise the same cap on the hero. Online savings accounts in general are still "savings." Plan transfers, do not swipe.
What neither one is
Neither is a 4% account. Forbright's 4.15% needs $1,000 and is promotional (standard 3.85%). CIT's 4.10% needs $5,000 to avoid a 0.60% leftover rate and the boost had an August 31, 2026 date on it. LendingClub's 4.00% needs a $250 monthly deposit. The catch report is the list. The best HYSA guide is the buyer-facing cut.
Marcus's referral boost is the one footnote that looks like a catch if you squint. It is +1.00% for three months on top of the stated APY. After that you are back on the then-current standard rate. We do not treat 3.65% as the product. The product is 3.40% with $0 friction.
Ally's 3.00% matches American Express High Yield Savings and Capital One 360 Performance Savings in our table. You are not unique at 3.00%. You are unique if you want Ally's buckets and a checking pair under one brand.
If you want a CD instead of a variable savings rate, that is a different page: CD vs high-yield savings and the CD hub. Marcus also sells no-penalty CDs. We do not mix those APYs into this savings comparison.
Who should open which
Marcus if the job is "hold this money and pay me." You already have checking somewhere else. You can wait a day for a transfer. You do not need a branch and you do not need cash.
Ally if the job is "this is my bank." You want Zelle and an Allpoint ATM through spending. You will use buckets so the tax money does not vanish into the grocery pile. You accept 3.00% for that.
Open both only if you like paperwork. The rate gap is not large enough to justify a second login for most balances under $10,000. Above that, a Marcus parking lot plus Ally checking is a reasonable split. It is also two 1099-INT forms and two apps.
Rates move. We will be wrong the week a bank cuts. The live rows are Marcus and Ally. The savings hub is the dated table.
