SoFi High-Yield Savings Review 2026: 3.30% APY, Only With Deposits
Deposit rules, when SoFi Plus pays off, fees, ATM access and FDIC limits for SoFi savings, checked on SoFi's rate sheet dated September 23, 2026.
SoFi savings is worth it when a paycheck or $5,000 of qualifying deposits lands in each rolling 31-day window, and then it pays 3.30% APY. Without that flow it pays 0.80%. SoFi Plus costs $10 a month and pays 4.50% on the first $20,000 with no deposit condition. It beats the deposit route only on balances above $10,000, after its $120 yearly fee.
What each route pays
| Route | What you must do | Savings APY | Yearly cost | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No deposit flow | Nothing | 0.80% | $0 | Cash you will not move |
| Direct deposit or qualifying deposits | Keep the flow running every 31 days | 3.30% | $0 | Paycheck households and steady transfers |
| New-member boost | Open between September 3 and December 31, 2026, then keep the flow | 4.20% for up to six months | $0 | Switchers who already have a flow |
| SoFi Plus | Pay $10 a month | 4.50% up to $20,000, 3.30% above | $120 | Balances above $10,000 |
The table covers the account in four rows, and each rate is the best case for its route. SoFi's high-yield savings page and its rate sheet say the rates are variable and can change at any time, so read every figure as the terms dated September 23, 2026.
The deposit rate depends on money in, not on your employer
SoFi pays the deposit rate when the account receives an Eligible Direct Deposit or $5,000 of Qualifying Deposits in a rolling 31-day window. An Eligible Direct Deposit is a recurring payroll, pension or government benefit payment that arrives by ACH every 31 calendar days. Qualifying Deposits are looser. They add up across ACH transfers, inbound wires, peer-to-peer transfers from PayPal, Venmo, Wise or Zelle, check deposits, instant funding and push payments to the debit card, and cash.
That rule changes who should open the account. A freelancer who moves the same sum in from another bank in each 31-day window earns the same deposit rate as an employee on payroll direct deposit. The catch is the window. Miss a 31-day period and the account falls back to 0.80%, the rate SoFi lists for accounts with neither a deposit flow nor Plus. Checking pays 0.50% in every case.
The boost adds 0.90 points for six months
SoFi's new-member boost lifts the savings rate by 0.90 points on top of the deposit rate, for up to six months, so the rate reads 4.20% while it runs. You must open your first SoFi Checking and Savings account between September 3 and December 31, 2026. Then you need an Eligible Direct Deposit or Qualifying Deposits within 60 days of opening, and you must keep meeting that test every 31 days to keep the boost.
The boost applies to one SoFi Savings account. On a $10,000 balance, the extra 0.90 points add about $45 over six months, before tax. That is a real gain, but a small one, and it ends with the six months. The boost cannot be combined with SoFi Plus, so you choose one or the other.
SoFi Plus pays the top tier without a deposit flow
SoFi Plus costs $10 a month, billed monthly. It is the only route in the table that earns the top tier without a deposit flow. A paid member earns 4.50% APY on up to $20,000 in one SoFi Savings account, and the deposit rate on the balance above that. The tier also appears on SoFi's rate sheet dated September 23, 2026, so the subscription page and the rate sheet agree.
The subscription has to earn its $120. Against the no-flow route, Plus pays more once the balance passes about $3,250. Against the deposit route, it pays more only above $10,000, because the 1.20 point gap on that balance equals the fee. Under that balance, a saver with a paycheck keeps more on the deposit route. The table below shows yearly figures before tax, assuming the rates hold for a full year. Interest math for the rest of the market is in how much interest a high-yield savings account earns.
| Balance | No deposit flow, 0.80% | Deposit route, 3.30% | Plus, net of its fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5,000 | $40 | $165 | $105 |
| $10,000 | $80 | $330 | $330 |
| $20,000 | $160 | $660 | $780 |
| $50,000 | $400 | $1,650 | $1,770 |
The Plus column pays the deposit rate on the balance above $20,000, so the gap between the two columns stays at the $120 fee above that point.
Moving money costs $30 for an outgoing wire
SoFi charges no monthly maintenance fee, no minimum balance fee and no overdraft or returned item fee, according to its fee sheet dated May 18, 2026. Zelle, bill pay and mobile check deposits cost nothing. The charges fall on money leaving the account. An outgoing domestic wire costs $30. An outgoing Instant Transfer costs 0.75% of the amount, with a $1 minimum and a $30 maximum. A global remittance costs 0.50%. Incoming wires and incoming Instant Transfers are free. The fees on moving money from Venmo, PayPal, Cash App or Zelle are compared in payment app fees compared.
Overdraft cover works differently from the deposit test. SoFi offers up to $50 of negative balance on debit card purchases to members who receive at least $1,000 of Eligible Direct Deposits in a rolling 31-day period. That helps a payroll household. It does nothing for someone paid by transfer, so check that rule before you count on it.
ATMs, transfers and early pay
SoFi's ATM access runs on the Allpoint network, which the bank says includes 55,000+ ATMs, as its ATM page describes. Withdrawals at Allpoint machines carry no fee. An out-of-network machine can charge its own fee, and SoFi does not reimburse it. That makes the Allpoint map the real test. A household that mostly uses other ATMs will pay fees the bank will not return, and a higher savings rate does not offset them.
Early access to direct deposit funds depends on when SoFi receives Federal Reserve notice of the payment, typically up to two days before the scheduled date, though timing can vary. The page gives no general timing for ACH moves between SoFi and another bank, so plan transfers around pay dates.
Deposit insurance covers $250,000 directly and up to $3 million by opt-in
SoFi Bank, N.A. is a member FDIC. Direct insurance covers $250,000 per depositor per legal category of ownership. Above that, the SoFi Insured Deposit Program can insure deposits up to $3 million by placing your cash at Participating Banks, and you choose whether to join. SoFi says joining does not change your interest rate. The bank can change its list of participating banks, so check that list before you rely on the $3 million figure. For the general logic of FDIC limits, are high-yield savings accounts safe walks through the same rule for every bank.
The direct-deposit bonus is one payment, and it may be taxable
SoFi's direct-deposit bonus pays $50 for $1,000 to $4,999.99 of Eligible Direct Deposits, or $400 for $5,000 or more, counted over 25 days from the first deposit. Deposits under $1,000 earn nothing. The first Eligible Direct Deposit has to arrive by December 31, 2026, and the bonus is paid within seven business days. It is limited to one per member, and only for people who have never set up direct deposit with SoFi. SoFi says bonuses are miscellaneous income and may be reportable for tax, so plan for tax on whichever amount you earn, which is not part of your rate. Checking account bonuses compares this offer with the other bank bonuses we verify.
Where the rate sits against the market
FinanceRadar data: across the 49 high-yield savings accounts we verify, the average APY is 3.25% as of October 10, 2026, and 48 of them publish an APY. SoFi's deposit-route rate sits 0.05 points above that average. Its no-flow rate sits 2.45 points below it. The top verified rate is 4.50%, held by GO2bank Savings Vaults, so the deposit route is a fair rate, not a leader (high-yield savings statistics).
The reason to open the account is the bundle: checking, savings, the Allpoint network and no monthly fee under one login. The rate is ordinary, and it stays ordinary unless the deposit habit keeps running.
Who should open it, and who should skip it
SoFi suits a household that gets paid by direct deposit or moves qualifying deposits into the account in each 31-day window, keeps checking at the same bank and uses Allpoint ATMs. The deposit route and the bonus reward that household. The boost helps a switcher for six months. The Plus tier suits a saver with a larger balance who accepts a yearly fee for the higher rate.
Skip it if your balance will sit idle with no deposits. The default rate sits far below the 3.25% average, and against that default, Plus only pays once the balance passes about $3,250. For a balance you want to earn more without changing your habits, compare it first with the best high-yield savings guide and with high-yield savings versus a money market account. The wider cash question is covered in where to put cash in 2026. Skip SoFi too if you often use out-of-network ATMs or send wires regularly. Interest is taxable, so every rate in the table is a pretax figure.
How we checked
We read SoFi's high-yield savings page, its rate sheet effective September 23, 2026, its fee sheet dated May 18, 2026, its Plus page and its ATM page, all on October 10, 2026. The Plus page carries an older rate date, May 28, 2026, and the rate sheet lists the same tier with a newer date, so the rate sheet governs. The market average is FinanceRadar's live high-yield savings statistics as of October 10, 2026. The method is on our how we rate page. We did not open an account, link a bank or move money for this article.
This is general information, not personalized financial advice. Confirm the current APY, boost, Plus price and fees with SoFi before you move money, since SoFi says its rates are variable and its fees can change.
FAQ
Is SoFi savings worth it in 2026?
It is worth it for a household that receives a paycheck there or moves qualifying deposits in each 31-day window, because the account then pays the deposit rate with no monthly fee. Without that flow it pays 0.80%, a rate the bundle alone does not justify. SoFi Plus beats the deposit route only on balances above $10,000.
What APY does SoFi savings pay?
As of September 23, 2026, SoFi pays 3.30% APY with an Eligible Direct Deposit or Qualifying Deposits in each 31-day window, and 0.80% without them. The new-member boost lifts the rate to 4.20% for up to six months for accounts opened between September 3 and December 31, 2026. SoFi Plus pays 4.50% on the first $20,000 for its monthly fee.
Does SoFi pay interest without direct deposit?
Yes, 0.80% APY, the rate SoFi's rate sheet lists for accounts with no Eligible Direct Deposit, no qualifying deposits in 31 days and no Plus subscription. Checking pays 0.50% in every case. On a balance you leave alone, that is about $40 a year on $5,000 before tax, so the no-flow route suits cash you will not move.
Is SoFi Plus worth it for savings?
Without a deposit flow, Plus is worth it on balances above about $3,250. With a deposit flow, it is worth it above the $10,000 mark. At $20,000, Plus nets about $780 a year after its $120 fee, against about $660 on the deposit route and $160 with no flow. The boost cannot be combined with Plus.
Are SoFi savings deposits FDIC insured?
SoFi Bank, N.A. is a member FDIC, which insures $250,000 per depositor per legal category directly. The SoFi Insured Deposit Program can insure up to $3 million by spreading cash across Participating Banks, and you opt in. SoFi says joining does not change your rate, but the bank list can change, so check it before you rely on the full cap.
What fees does SoFi charge on savings?
No monthly, maintenance or minimum balance fee applies. The fee sheet dated May 18, 2026 charges $30 for an outgoing domestic wire, 0.75% for an outgoing Instant Transfer with a $1 minimum and a $30 maximum, and 0.50% for a global remittance. An out-of-network ATM operator can charge its own fee, and SoFi does not refund it.
Is this SoFi review personal financial advice?
No. It is general information built from SoFi's own rate sheet, fee sheet and product pages read on October 10, 2026, plus FinanceRadar's live average. It does not weigh your tax position or your balance. Rates are variable and SoFi can change them, so confirm the current terms with SoFi before you open the account.
