How this rate compares

7.4x

the FDIC national savings average of 0.38% (August 17, 2026). On a $10,000 balance that is about $242 more in a year.

Last verified August 11, 2026

We re-verify against the issuer's own page when we refresh this listing, and we stamp that date. We do not claim a daily check.

APYs are variable and can change at any time. The FDIC national average is a floor for what an ordinary savings account pays, not a competitor. Named comparisons use each product's last issuer-page check.

Is it worth it?

$280 a year on a $10,000 balance

At 2.8% APY, $10,000 earns about $280 in the first year, versus roughly $38 at the 0.38% FDIC national average (August 17, 2026). That is about $242 more for moving the same money. APY is variable and shown as of the date above.

What is Citizens Access Savings?

Editorial review
Citizens Access is the online-only deposit division of Citizens Bank, N.A., a top-20 US bank with more than $200 billion in assets. The savings account pays 2.80% APY as of August 2026 on every balance from one cent up, with no monthly fee, no opening fee, and daily compounding. The account is genuinely frictionless: $0.01 is enough to open and to earn the advertised rate, there are no service fees of any kind, and no transaction caps. Citizens quotes separate rate tiers for balances under and over $5,000, but independent trackers currently list a single rate for all balances, and the old $5,000 opening minimum that this account launched with was dropped years ago. The problem is the direction of travel. Bankrate's rate tracker shows the account at 3.50% APY in August 2025, cut to 3.35% in November, 3.15% through the winter, 3.00% in May 2026, and 2.80% since late July 2026. That is five cuts in a year, and it leaves Citizens Access well behind the August 2026 leaders paying 3.90% to 4.15%. Citizens once positioned this account near the top of the market; it no longer does, and the CD lineup (which still requires $5,000 minimums) is similarly mid-pack. Structural fine print: there is no ATM card and no checking account on the Access platform, so money comes out via electronic transfer to a linked bank or a mailed check. FDIC insurance runs under Citizens Bank, N.A. certificate 57957, which means deposits at Citizens Access and at regular Citizens Bank branches count against the same $250,000 per-depositor limit. There are no accounts for minors, and no joint branch integration: Access is a separate online platform. Choose Citizens Access if you want a no-minimum, zero-fee account backed by a major bank and you value institutional stability over the last hundred basis points of yield. Skip it if you are rate-sensitive: the same fee-free structure is available elsewhere at rates more than a full point higher, and this account's 12-month rate history suggests Citizens is not competing for the top of the table.

Why did the Citizens Access rate fall?

The APY is variable and Fed-driven. Bankrate's tracker records cuts from 3.50% (August 2025) to 3.35%, 3.15%, 3.00%, and 2.80% (July 2026), a faster slide than most top online rivals.
