Is the Amex Platinum Worth It in 2026? The Fee Math
Worth the $895 fee only if credits you already spend cover it, as of September 23, 2026. Statement-credit caps add to $2,984, and skipped months pay nothing.
The American Express Platinum Card is worth the $895 annual fee only when statement credits match spending you already do. As of September 23, 2026, that is the fee American Express lists for the basic card. Lounge visits do not refund it, and most other purchases earn 1 point per dollar, so a normal year of spend does not pay the fee back in points.
FinanceRadar data: across the 37 credit cards we verify, the average annual fee is $200 and the published range runs from $0 to this card's fee, as of September 23, 2026 (credit card statistics). This card sits at the top of that range, which means a credit you skip costs more here than on a typical card we track. Eighteen of those cards charge no annual fee at all.
Figures below are from the Platinum card page, the application terms that print the benefit rules, and the cardmember agreement dated March 31, 2026, all checked September 23, 2026.
| Detail | What Amex lists for the consumer Platinum Card |
|---|---|
| Annual fee (basic card) | $895 |
| Additional Platinum card | $195 each year |
| Companion Platinum card | $0 |
| Flights booked direct or via Amex Travel | 5X, on up to $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year |
| Prepaid hotels via Amex Travel, and prepaid vacation rentals on AmexTravel.com | 5X |
| Other purchases, including dining, groceries, and gas | 1X |
| Pay Over Time APR | 19.49% to 28.49% variable (terms accurate as of June 14, 2026) |
| Cash advance APR | 28.74% variable |
| Foreign transaction fee | None |
| Lounge valuation Amex prints | Over $850 a year, which is not a statement credit |
The fee buys access, not a high earn rate
Flights and a narrow set of prepaid bookings are the only purchases that beat the base rate. Benefit terms give 5 points per dollar on air tickets bought from the airline or through American Express Travel, by phone, on AmexTravel.com, or in the Amex Travel app, up to the cap in the table. The same 5X covers prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel and prepaid vacation rentals booked on AmexTravel.com. A fare on any other site, a hotel bill paid at the property, and a packaged cruise do not qualify, so a trip booked the usual way does not help the fee through points.
Terms exclude charter and private-jet flights, flights inside tours, cruises, or packages, and ticket-change fees. A cruise charged through American Express Travel earns one extra point per dollar, and Amex says that point is not stacked on the 5X. The cruise line's own site earns the base rate. A digital wallet or a third-party processor can also strip the bonus, because Amex uses the merchant code it receives.
Dining, groceries, gas, and ordinary bills earn 1 point per dollar. That is most of a normal year, which is why this card is a weak everyday card. Points transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners, and the offer terms say a point's value depends on the redemption you choose. This page does not convert points into dollars, so a points balance is not a line you can subtract from the fee.
Lounge access is the other thing the fee buys, and it is not a refund. The card page describes Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass after enrollment, other partner lounges, and 10 Delta Sky Club visits when you are booked on an eligible Delta flight. Amex prices that collection at over $850 a year and more than 1,550 lounges, with the lounge count footnoted as of January 2026. Skipped visits do not pay that valuation back, and companion cards are shut out of the additional partner lounges, so a second cardholder does not inherit the access.
Add the credits only if you already spend them
Published statement-credit caps add to $2,984 when you use the application-terms figure for CLEAR+ and the card page's headline for Walmart+. That total is a ceiling, not a check Amex sends in January, and a line that does not match a bill you already pay is zero in your math. The ceiling leaves out tax that the Walmart+ terms say can be credited on top of the monthly membership fee, the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, Amex's lounge valuation, and the Fine Hotels average perk.
The card page headlines CLEAR+ at up to $219. The application terms cap the same benefit at $209. The addition below uses the terms cap, so the card-page headline would change the ceiling by $10. Use the terms number when you decide whether the fee comes back.
| Credit | Annual cap | What has to be true |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection via Amex Travel | $600 | Split across the two halves of the year; pay-now bookings only; Hotel Collection needs two nights |
| Uber Cash | $200 | $15 each month plus $20 in December; unused Uber Cash expires at the end of the month |
| Uber One | $120 | Auto-renewing U.S. membership charged to the card, not paid with Uber Cash |
| Airline incidental fees | $200 | One selected airline; the fare itself does not qualify |
| CLEAR+ | $209 | Application-terms cap; the card page headlines up to $219 |
| Resy | $400 | Split across four quarters; enrollment required |
| Digital entertainment | $300 | Up to $25 a month; enrollment required; charged direct with the partner |
| lululemon | $300 | Split across four quarters; outlets and gift cards excluded |
| Walmart+ | $155 | Card-page headline; terms pay up to $12.95 a month plus tax, and an annual plan does not qualify |
| Oura Ring | $200 | A ring at ouraring.com; memberships, chargers, and gift cards excluded |
| Equinox | $300 | U.S. club membership or Equinox+ bought outside the Equinox+ app |
The rules under the caps are what make the ceiling miss. A second-half hotel stay cannot spend an unused first-half balance, so one autumn trip cannot collect the full hotel credit. A booking on the hotel's own website earns nothing toward this credit, which rules out the way most people reserve a room. A companion card can book Hotel Collection but not Fine Hotels on this credit.
Amex's separate average of $550 in on-property perks, from 2025 two-night Fine Hotels stays, is not cash off the fee. Uber Cash left unused expires at 11:59 pm Hawaii time on the last day of the month, and a card added through Apple Pay or PayPal does not qualify.
The airline credit works for one carrier you name before the charge. The airline list in the terms is Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Spirit, Southwest, and United. You can change it once a year, in January, and charges before you enroll do not count. A carrier missing from that list means this credit is unavailable to you.
Upgrades, mileage purchases, gift cards, and award tickets are not incidental fees, and the fare itself is excluded, so buying the ticket does not use the credit. If the credit is missing after eight weeks, the terms say to call, because Amex uses the airline's coding.
Resy misses a restaurant inside a hotel, a delivery app, or a gift card, and a skipped quarter does not raise the next cap. Digital entertainment counts only when you pay Disney+, ESPN at stream.ESPN.com, Hulu, The New York Times, Paramount+, Peacock, The Wall Street Journal, or YouTube Premium, Music, or TV directly. A cable bundle does not qualify, which means those channels on a cable bill earn nothing here.
An annual Walmart+ plan earns nothing until you switch to monthly, at least a day before renewal. A statement credit can post to the Pay In Full side while the purchase sits in Pay Over Time, so it may not shrink the balance that accrues interest.
Global Entry ($120) or TSA PreCheck (up to $85) is once every four years, not an annual offset. The Venue Collection's 10% back, up to $250 through December 31, 2026, is a separate enrollment and sits outside the ceiling above.
Where the fee actually breaks even
Four credits a frequent traveler might already pay still miss the fee. Uber Cash, Uber One, incidental fees on one airline, and the digital entertainment partners add to $820, which leaves a gap of $75 against the annual fee. That arithmetic counts only the published caps, and only if every dollar is a bill you would have paid without the card. A month of Uber you skip, or a streaming plan you do not have, drops the stack by that month's cap.
| Stack you already pay | Sum of the caps | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Uber Cash, Uber One, one airline's incidental fees, and digital entertainment | $820 | Short by $75 |
| That stack plus the hotel credit, both halves | $1,420 | Clears the fee before lounges or the other merchants |
Adding both halves of the hotel credit is what takes that stack past the fee, and only when the stays are prepaid through American Express Travel. A reservation on the hotel's own site does not enter the math, so the clearing row is a booking habit, not any hotel stay. The first-row gap is small enough that CLEAR+, one Resy quarter, or a month of Walmart+ can close it, and only if that purchase was already going to happen.
Oura does not repeat every year unless you buy a ring every year, so it is a one-time offset rather than an annual one. Equinox counts only if you already pay Equinox, and buying either brand to use the credit is new spending, not a refund of the fee. Counted with no statement credits, the lounge valuation in the first table still sits short of the fee.
Welcome offers are not one number
There is no single public welcome offer on the card page checked September 23, 2026. One application-terms page listed 150,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $12,000 in the first six months. A second application-terms page listed 50,000 points after the same spend. Amex says offers vary by advertisement, that you may see a different number, and that the way to get a specific offer is to apply through that advertisement.
Both pages exclude fees, interest, traveler's checks, prepaid cards, gift cards, person-to-person payments, and other cash equivalents, so gift cards cannot manufacture the threshold. Points post 8 to 12 weeks after you hit the threshold, and only if the account is open and not past due. Returns made to manufacture the spend can cost you the points, and Amex says it may cancel accounts. The six months can also run shorter, depending on when the card arrives, and a late merchant submission can push a purchase outside the window.
You may not get a welcome offer if you have or have had the consumer Platinum Card, the Charles Schwab Platinum, the Morgan Stanley Platinum, or earlier versions of those cards. Amex also weighs your history and the cards you have opened and closed, and it says it will tell you before processing if you are not eligible. The card has no preset spending limit, but Amex can still assign one, and the offer terms say you may need to pay the balance down before more purchases count toward the bonus. Read the offer on your own application, not a screenshot of someone else's 150,000 points.
Interest, refunds, and costs that sit beside the fee
Pay Over Time is not a 0% year. Application terms checked September 23, 2026 list 19.49% to 28.49% variable for Pay Over Time, 28.74% for cash advances, and a 29.99% penalty rate, accurate as of June 14, 2026, with a 29.99% cap. The March 31, 2026 agreement states those as prime plus 12.74 to 21.74 points, 21.99 points, and 26.74 points. Carrying the welcome spend at that range can cost more than a year of credits you only partly use.
For the payment rule that applies to any charge card, see charge card vs credit card.
FinanceRadar data: a separate cut of those same 37 cards shows that 18 advertise a 0% introductory APR, as of September 23, 2026 on the same statistics page. This application does not advertise that introductory rate, so interest on a balance you carried to hit a welcome offer can wipe out the reason the first year looked attractive. What a revolving balance costs on the wider set of cards is in the credit card APR report.
You avoid that interest if you pay the total new balance, or the adjusted balance when a plan is open, by the due date, at least 25 days after the statement closes. If Pay Over Time is active at 8 pm Eastern when the annual fee posts, the fee itself can enter the interest-bearing balance, and a fee you expected to pay once can start accruing before any credit has posted.
The fee comes back if you close within 30 days after the statement that shows it, and after that it is non-refundable. The refund window does not apply when the billing address is in Massachusetts at the time you close. Reopening a cancelled account can cost a $25 fee. Trip delay, cancellation, cell phone claims, and purchase protection pay after a loss, and they do not reduce the fee in a year you file nothing.
Who the fee fits, and who should skip it
The fee fits a year that already matches the credit list, plus airports where you will actually enter a Centurion Lounge or a Priority Pass club. That means prepaid Fine Hotels or Hotel Collection stays through Amex Travel, bag or seat fees on the airline you selected, and Uber, streaming, or Resy charges that exist without a new errand. If those charges are not already in the year, the card is asking you to invent spending to chase a credit.
Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite are enrollment status, including an 80% bonus on Hilton base points, and neither posts as cash against the fee. For Marriott status at a lower fee, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless review covers a $95 card with automatic Silver Elite status and a path to Gold at $35,000 of yearly spend. The wider lounge set is in the travel credit card guide.
Skip it when food is the spending you want rewarded. On a $1,000 supermarket purchase this card earns 1,000 points, which is the base rate and will not close the fee on its own. The Gold Card earns 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide, up to $50,000 a calendar year, and 4 points per dollar at United States supermarkets, up to $25,000, then the base rate. Amex lists Gold's fee at $325, and Gold has no lounge access, so the trade is food earning against lounge access, which is the point of Gold vs Platinum.
Straight cash back, without a monthly credit calendar, is the cash back guide.
Skip it when you want a lower fee and a higher everyday rate. Capital One's Venture X page lists a $395 fee and 2 miles per dollar outside Capital One Travel, twice this card's base rate, plus its own lounges, which is the comparison when everyday earn matters more than Centurion access. Chase's Sapphire Reserve page lists a $795 fee, the closer annual charge among premium travel cards. The head-to-head is Reserve vs Platinum vs Venture X, and a lower-fee points comparison is Sapphire Preferred vs Gold. Readers who want Amex's lower fee and no lounge access can compare the Amex Green Card, whose $150 fee is covered only if they already pay for CLEAR Plus.
Skip it when the merchant list will go unused. The no-annual-fee cards in the set we verify are the off-ramp in the no-annual-fee guide, and the full ranking shows where this fee sits. Published credit profiles for other cards are in the cards-by-score guide.
Skip it as well if the balance might revolve. The application terms list no introductory rate, so carrying the welcome spend means the Pay Over Time range in the table, and the interest can exceed a partial year of credits.
How we compared
We read Amex's Platinum card page, two consumer application-terms pages (one listing 150,000 points and one listing 50,000), the benefit terms on the first of those pages, and the cardmember agreement dated March 31, 2026. The same day we read Amex's Gold card page, Chase's Sapphire Reserve page, and Capital One's Venture X page for the fees named above. Issuer pages were read on September 23, 2026, with no application submitted and no lounge visit.
The application terms point readers to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's credit card tips. This is general information about a published fee, not a recommendation for one credit file. A commission on a link, when Financeradar receives one, does not change this fee math (how we make money).
FAQ
Is the Amex Platinum worth the annual fee in 2026?
It is worth the fee when statement credits you would have spent anyway cover it. As of September 23, 2026, American Express lists the basic card at $895. The published credit ceiling counts only if you use those credits, and everyday purchases earn 1 point per dollar, so points on ordinary spend are not what pays the fee.
How much is the Amex Platinum annual fee?
The card page lists $895 for the basic card. An additional Platinum card is $195 a year, and a companion Platinum card is $0. The March 31, 2026 agreement returns the fee when you close inside 30 days after the statement that lists it. Past that window the fee is kept, and a Massachusetts billing address at closing is outside the refund rule even during those 30 days.
What credits does the Amex Platinum include in 2026?
The caps we added, using the application-terms CLEAR+ figure, come to $2,984 a year. The largest lines are the hotel credit through Amex Travel, Resy, digital entertainment, lululemon, Equinox, Uber Cash, and the airline incidental credit. Unused months and unused quarters do not roll into a bigger later cap, and a stay booked on the hotel's own website does not qualify.
Which public Platinum welcome offer should you count?
It depends on the advertisement you apply through, not on a single number printed on the card page. On September 23, 2026, one Amex application-terms page offered 150,000 Membership Rewards points after $12,000 in six months, and another offered 50,000 points after the same spend. You may be blocked if you already hold or once held a consumer, Schwab, or Morgan Stanley Platinum card, and Amex says what a point is worth depends on how you redeem it.
Does the Amex Platinum charge interest if you pay the statement in full?
Not on purchases that would otherwise accrue, if you pay the full new balance shown on the statement by the due date. The application terms do not list a 0% introductory APR. Pay Over Time is 19.49% to 28.49% variable, accurate as of June 14, 2026, and a cash advance is 28.74% variable from the transaction date. If Pay Over Time is switched on, the annual fee itself can land in that balance.
Who should skip the Amex Platinum?
Skip it if you will not use the credits, if restaurants and supermarkets are the spending you want to earn on, or if you might carry a balance. Gold is the food card, at $325 on Amex's page, with 4 points per dollar at restaurants and United States supermarkets inside published caps and with no lounge access. Venture X lists a $395 fee and 2 miles per dollar outside its travel portal, and Sapphire Reserve lists a $795 fee, which are the alternatives when this credit list will sit unused.
Does the Platinum card have a foreign transaction fee?
No. The card page, the application terms, and the March 31, 2026 agreement all put the foreign transaction fee at none. A charge that is not a flight or a qualifying prepaid Amex Travel booking still earns 1 point per dollar, including a hotel booked on the hotel's own site while abroad.
