Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve Worth It in 2026

Worth the fee only when credits you will use cover it. As of September 23, 2026, Chase lists $795. The travel credit leaves a gap, and lounge access does not close it.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is worth the annual fee only when statement credits you will actually use cover it. As of September 23, 2026, Chase's card page lists that fee at $795. The travel credit that posts on its own does not cover the fee, and a lounge visit does not refund the difference.

FinanceRadar data: the average annual fee across the 37 credit cards we verify is $200, 18 of those 37 charge no annual fee (49%), and the highest published fee in that set is $895, as of September 23, 2026 (credit card statistics). This card sits far above that average, and if the credit calendar will go unused, the no-annual-fee guide is the comparison, and the full ranking shows where a fee this size sits. For a card with no annual fee to compare against this one, the Apple Card review checks what a zero-fee card returns on everyday spending.

The useful test is which credits match spending you already do, on the calendar Chase sets. A headline that adds travel value to lifestyle value is not a check that arrives when the fee posts.

Figures below are from that card page, including its offer details, and from the pricing information linked there, checked September 23, 2026. The pricing sheet says its costs are accurate as of March 24, 2026, and the card page matched that same purchase range.

Statement credits are not the same as Chase's valuations

A credit that posts to the account can reduce the fee. A valuation Chase prints for lounges, a hotel perk, or a free subscription cannot, so treating it as cash makes the fee look paid before the statement arrives. The card page groups benefits into "over $1,500 in annual travel value" and "over $1,500 in annual lifestyle value," and a separate line calls the bundle $3,000 in annual value. Those sums mix statement credits with amounts that never hit the bill.

StubHub and viagogo, through December 31, 2027$300Same half-year split, activation required; UK events on stubhub.co.uk do not qualify
Peloton memberships, through December 31, 2027$10 a monthActivation required; All-Access, Rental, App+, Guide, App One, or Strength+ bought from Peloton; app stores do not qualify
Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS$120 every four yearsOne application fee, paid to the government or an authorized enrollment provider

The travel credit follows your account anniversary, not the calendar year. Chase defines that year as the period from your account open date through the first statement date after the anniversary, then the next 12 billing cycles. A bag fee the airline posts after that window counts against the next year's cap.

Credits should post within 3 business days and can take up to 4 weeks, and you owe the charge until they do. Chase may reverse a credit if you close the account within 90 days of receiving it.

The Edit cap is a calendar year, and one booking cannot collect all of it, so one vacation does not finish the fee math. Offer details allow up to $250 on a single prepaid "Pay Now" stay of two nights or more, against a yearly maximum of $500, starting January 1, 2026. Two separate stays are required to reach that maximum, and a processing delay can push a charge into the next period.

The 2026 select-hotel credit is separate: prepaid two-night stays at IHG, Montage, Pendry, Omni, Virgin Hotels, Minor Hotels, and Pan Pacific, booked through Chase Travel, and it is not described as an annual credit after December 31, 2026. The covered portion of the travel credit, The Edit credit, and this select-hotel credit earns no points.

Dining and StubHub are split in half, and a skipped half does not raise the next one, so a quiet spring deletes half of each credit. Each allows up to $150 from January 1 through June 30 and again from July 1 through December 31. Dining has to be a direct charge at a restaurant on the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables list. Gift cards, a delivery app, and a third-party processor do not qualify.

StubHub needs activation, excludes gift cards, and runs through December 31, 2027. The dining credit does not print that end date.

Peloton posts the monthly amount in the table, after activation, on named memberships bought from Peloton through December 31, 2027. App-store charges do not qualify, and a full year of that credit still sits well under the fee, so the membership cannot carry the annual charge.

Where the fee actually breaks even

Two Edit stays plus the travel credit are the cleanest path that clears the fee before any points, and the margin is thin. The rows add only published statement-credit caps, and only if you hit each cap on spending you would have done anyway. A stay you book only to trigger the credit is new spending, so the fee is still there and the hotel bill is too.

Credits you actually captureSum of those capsAgainst the annual fee
Travel credit only$300Short by $495
Travel credit plus two Edit stays at the per-booking cap$800Ahead by $5
Travel credit plus both dining halves$600Short by $195
Travel credit, both dining halves, and both StubHub halves$900Ahead by $105
Travel credit, both StubHub halves, and a year of Peloton credits$720Short by $75

The two-stay row clears the fee by a few dollars, and the covered portion of each stay earns no points. Spend above the per-booking cap can still earn the Chase Travel rate. One Edit stay on top of the travel credit does not clear the fee. The 2026 select-hotel credit can close a gap like that during that calendar year, then it ends, and its covered portion also earns no points.

DoorDash, Lyft, Apple, and lounges sit outside that table because they do not post as statement credits, so using them can still leave the full fee on the bill. DashPass, if you activate by December 31, 2027, is a membership Chase values at $120 as of February 1, 2025, plus a $5 restaurant promo and two $10 non-restaurant promos each month. Leftover value inside an order is forfeited, a skipped month does not roll, and Apple Pay or Google Wallet does not qualify.

Lyft is an in-app credit of up to $10 a month through September 30, 2027, and unused credit dies at month-end. Apple TV and Apple Music are subscriptions Chase values at $288 a year if you activate by June 22, 2027, or a discount on Apple One if you already pay for that bundle.

Chase prices the lounge network at over $850, from a $469 Priority Pass Select value plus four Chase Sapphire Lounge day passes at $100 each. Skipped visits do not pay that back, and Priority Pass includes the primary cardmember and authorized users, two guests each, then $27 for another guest, and a wallet card is not accepted. An average of over $550 in on-property Edit benefits, from stays booked January through June 2025, is not cash. IHG Platinum Elite status through December 31, 2027, requires linking an IHG account and does not post as cash either.

Points do not pay the fee when the credit already did

The bonus rates are narrow, so groceries, gas, and ordinary bills stay at 1 point per dollar, and that spending will not earn the fee back. You earn 8 points per dollar through Chase Travel, including The Edit, 4 points per dollar on flights and hotels booked with the airline or hotel, and 3 points per dollar on dining worldwide, including takeout and eligible delivery.

Several credits erase points on the dollars they cover, so the best earn category can be worth nothing once the rebate lands. Offer details say the travel credit and The Edit credit earn nothing on the covered portion. The same is true of the 2026 select-hotel credit and of the Southwest credit that appears only after heavy spending. A Chase Travel stay fully absorbed by a hotel credit earns nothing, even though that stay would otherwise be the 8-point category. Dining and StubHub are not in that exclusion list.

Chase also says it does not decide whether a merchant codes the purchase correctly, so a restaurant inside a hotel or a shop inside an airport can miss both the bonus and the credit.

Through Chase Travel, offer details say 100 points are worth $1, and a Points Boost can make 100 points worth up to $2 on select flights and hotels. Boosts are tagged in search and change over time, so they are not a rate you can subtract from the fee. At the $1 rate, the public 100,000-point offer is worth $1,000 before any boost. The card page headlines that offer as $2,000 on select flights and hotels, which is the boosted ceiling.

Cash and gift cards are described only as varying in value. Points last while the account stays open, and a closure under the rewards agreement takes them away. The public page says points transfer to airline and hotel programs and does not print a ratio there.

The welcome offer depends on which Chase page you use

Count the offer on the application in front of you, because a larger total on someone else's screen does not reduce your fee. The public card page, checked September 23, 2026, offers 100,000 points after $6,000 in purchases in the first 3 months. Chase says offers may vary by where you apply, including online versus a branch, and can change. A limited-time Chase page checked the same day offered 150,000 points after the same purchase requirement. Unless you apply through that page, the larger total is not yours to set against the fee.

The bonus posts 6 to 8 weeks after you hit the spend, and only if the account is open and not in default. The annual fee does not count toward that spend, and neither do balance transfers, cash advances, cryptocurrency, gambling charges, person-to-person transfers, or fees. The card is unavailable if you already have one open. The bonus may be unavailable if you held this card before or already took a new-cardmember bonus on it. Chase may also weigh other cards you have opened and closed, and the page does not print a numeric cutoff.

Spending $75,000 in a calendar year, counting from 2025, adds benefits for the rest of that year and the next, and the annual fee does not count toward it. The additions include World of Hyatt Explorist status, IHG Diamond Elite, a Shops at Chase credit of $250, a Southwest credit of $500 on Chase Travel (that covered part earns no points), and Southwest A-List. If you downgrade and later upgrade, earlier spend does not count. That threshold is not part of an ordinary year's fee math.

Interest, an extra card, and protections that are not credits

The pricing information lists no 0% introductory purchase APR, so the welcome spend is not a free loan. The purchase range is 19.49% to 27.99% variable, built from the 6.75% Prime Rate as of March 24, 2026, plus 12.74 to 21.24 percentage points, with a 29.99% cap. Cash advances are 28.49% variable, and the fee is the greater of $10 or 5% of the amount, with interest from the transaction date.

Balance transfers use the same purchase range, a fee of the greater of $5 or 5%, and a cap of available credit or $15,000, whichever is lower. The account may not be eligible for a transfer. A penalty APR up to that same cap can follow a late or returned minimum payment and can last indefinitely.

You avoid interest on new purchases if you pay the entire balance, or the Interest Saving Balance, by the due date, at least 21 days after the cycle closes. A late or returned payment can cost up to $40. Chase Pay Over Time, when offered, adds a monthly fee of up to 1.72% and access is not guaranteed. Carrying the welcome-offer spend at the purchase range can erase a thin credit surplus, including the few dollars the two-stay path sits ahead.

FinanceRadar data: 18 of those same 37 cards advertise a 0% introductory APR, as of September 23, 2026 on the same statistics page. This pricing sheet does not advertise that introductory rate. What revolving costs on the cards we track is in the credit card APR report.

An authorized user costs $195 on top of the annual fee, and the caps do not double. That person's purchases can use the same credits, and they do get their own Priority Pass. The primary cardmember owes the balance, and Chase reports the account for every user. Trip delay coverage (up to $500 per traveler after more than 6 hours), trip cancellation (up to $10,000 per traveler and $20,000 per trip), and primary auto rental coverage up to $75,000 pay after a loss. They are not statement credits, so a year with no claim returns none of the fee.

Who should pay the Reserve fee, and who should leave it

The fee fits a year that already includes coded travel plus two prepaid Edit stays, or coded travel plus both dining halves and both StubHub halves, from someone who pays the statement in full. Direct flights and hotels still earn 4 points per dollar, and they do not trigger The Edit credit. That credit needs a prepaid Chase Travel booking of at least two nights, so a loyalty stay on the hotel's own site never starts it.

Skip it when the credits would require new errands. A hotel booked on the hotel's own site, meals outside Exclusive Tables, and no StubHub leave the travel credit and a large gap. Groceries and gas earn 1 point per dollar here, so they do not close it.

Chase Sapphire Preferred lists a $95 annual fee on its card page as of September 23, 2026, with 3 points per dollar on dining and on gas, 5 points per dollar on Chase Travel, and a $100 hotel credit each anniversary year. That page does not list this lounge network, which is why the comparison is Sapphire Preferred versus Sapphire Reserve. Preferred's public offer that day was 75,000 points after $5,000 in the first 3 months.

Skip it when ordinary spending matters more than the credit calendar. Capital One Venture X lists a $395 annual fee and 2 miles per dollar outside Capital One Travel, with no foreign transaction fee, on its card page as of September 23, 2026, which is the lower fee when everyday earn matters. American Express Platinum lists an $895 fee, 5 points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, and 1 point per dollar otherwise, on its card page the same day, a higher fee with its own credit list. See Reserve versus Platinum versus Venture X and Is the Amex Platinum worth it. Cash back without this calendar is the cash back guide, other profiles are in the cards-by-score guide, and lounge cards are in the travel card guide.

Skip it if the balance might revolve, because the thin surplus disappears once interest starts. The authorized-user fee does not buy a second travel credit. Approval is Chase's decision, not a result of the fee math.

How we checked

We read Chase's public Sapphire Reserve page and offer details, the pricing information linked from that page (costs accurate as of March 24, 2026), and a limited-time Chase advertisement with a larger welcome offer. The same day we read the Sapphire Preferred, Amex Platinum, and Venture X card pages for the fees and rates above. Pages were read on September 23, 2026, and we did not apply.

Chase's pricing sheet points to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's credit card tips. This is general information, not personalized financial advice, and if a link on this page pays Financeradar a commission, that payment does not change the credit math or the ranking (how we make money).

FAQ

Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve worth the annual fee in 2026?

Reserve is worth the charge when credits on trips and meals you would have booked anyway cover what Chase bills. As of September 23, 2026, Chase lists the fee in the first table. The travel credit alone leaves a gap, and two prepaid Edit stays at the per-booking cap, plus that travel credit, come to $800, only a few dollars over the fee, and the covered part earns no points. Travel plus both dining halves and both StubHub halves comes to $900. A lounge visit does not refund whatever those credits leave unpaid.

What does Chase charge for the Sapphire Reserve each year?

Chase lists $795 for the card, checked September 23, 2026, on both the card page and the pricing information. Each authorized user is a separate charge on that sheet. The pricing information says those costs are accurate as of March 24, 2026. Chase may reverse statement credits if you close the account within 90 days of receiving one, so an offset can return if you close inside that window.

Which credits can offset the Chase Sapphire Reserve fee?

The credits that post to the account are the anniversary-year travel credit, The Edit credit (two stays to reach the annual maximum), the select-hotel credit through December 31, 2026, Exclusive Tables dining, StubHub and viagogo through December 31, 2027, and the monthly Peloton membership credit. DoorDash promos, Lyft in-app credit, Apple subscriptions, and the lounge valuation do not post as statement credits, so the year can feel rich while the fee line stays. A skipped dining half or StubHub half does not raise the next cap.

Does Chase publish one Sapphire Reserve welcome offer for every applicant?

No. The public card page offers 100,000 points after $6,000 in the first 3 months. A limited-time Chase page on September 23, 2026, offered 150,000 points after that same spend, and Chase says the offer depends on where you apply. The annual fee and cash advances do not count, and a prior bonus on this card can block a new one. At $1 per 100 points through Chase Travel, the dollar figure still depends on the offer you were shown and on whether a Points Boost applies.

What APR does the Chase Sapphire Reserve charge if you carry a balance?

The pricing information lists a purchase APR of 19.49% to 27.99% variable, a cash advance APR of 28.49% variable, and a penalty APR of up to 29.99%. Variable rates use the 6.75% Prime Rate as of March 24, 2026, and that penalty figure is also the maximum APR. The sheet does not list a 0% introductory purchase APR. You avoid interest on new purchases if you pay the entire balance or the Interest Saving Balance by the due date, at least 21 days after the cycle closes.

Do authorized users get their own Sapphire Reserve travel credit?

No. Their purchases can use the account's existing credits, and they receive their own Priority Pass access, but the caps are not doubled. The pricing information charges $195 a year for each authorized user, and the primary cardmember owes the balance. Chase may report the account for every user, so the extra card shows on the primary credit file. A card stored only in a digital wallet is not accepted for Priority Pass entry.

Who should skip the Chase Sapphire Reserve in 2026?

Skip it if you will not use the travel credit plus another stack that clears the fee, if groceries and gas are the spending you want rewarded, or if you might carry a balance. Sapphire Preferred lists a $95 annual fee, with 3 points per dollar on dining and on gas, and without this lounge network. Venture X lists a $395 annual fee and 2 miles per dollar outside its travel portal, and Platinum lists an $895 annual fee. Those are the comparisons when this credit list will sit unused.
