Paper Statement Fees by Bank in 2026: Who Charges and How to Avoid It

Which banks charge for paper statements, how much each charges, under which condition, and how to avoid the charge without a banker.

Eleven of the 59 accounts we counted charge for a paper statement, according to the fee documents we read on October 27, 2026. Among those 11, the lowest charge is $0.50 per paper copy at Barclays Tiered Savings, and Robinhood Gold Cash Sweep charges $2 per monthly statement only when the account holds under $50. Another 43 never mention the fee, which is not the same as free.

FinanceRadar data: of the 59 savings and checking accounts whose fee documents we read on October 27, 2026, 11 charge for a paper statement, 5 state no fee or do not offer paper statements, and 43 never mention the fee. The median charge among the 11 is $5, and a monthly charge of that size costs $60 a year. The account-level rows behind these counts sit in the bank fee dataset, which you can download as a CSV file.

Table: paper statement charges at the 11 accounts that charge, read October 27, 2026. The document date is the date printed in each bank's own document.

Six of the 11 charges come from Axos: five Axos accounts plus UFB Portfolio Savings, which runs on the Axos personal schedule. The charges fall into three shapes: a per-copy price, a per-request price and a monthly price. Read the condition column before you compare two numbers, because a per-request charge and a monthly charge of the same size cost very different amounts over a year.

Which banks put a price on a paper statement?

Eleven accounts charge. Among those 11, Barclays has the lowest figure at $0.50 per paper copy, but the units differ: Robinhood charges per monthly statement and only under $50, Bread per request, Poppy and Vio per month, and the Axos and UFB charges per paper statement, so how often you pay depends on how often the bank mails one.

The Bread agreement says the bank "may charge a Paper Statement Request fee" when you ask it to mail a copy of your account statement, and the schedule rate is per request. That is a statement fee in practice, so we count it. A copy fee that only covers an extra copy of a check image is a different thing, and we do not count it here.

Five accounts state no fee or do not offer paper statements. Elevault High-Yield Savings lets you request paper copies at no charge. Fidelity Cash Management Account lists monthly statements at $0 per statement. Truist One Savings states no charge for a paper statement or a paperless online statement. GO2bank Savings Vaults and Openbank High Yield Savings do not mail paper statements, so there is nothing to charge for.

Among the accounts that never mention the fee are the large banks most readers know: Chase Total Checking and Chase Savings, Citi Regular Checking and Citi Accelerate Savings, Capital One 360 Checking, Bank of America Advantage Plus, Wells Fargo Everyday Checking and Ally Online Savings. A missing line in the documents we read means the bank did not print a fee, not that the fee is zero. Ask before you rely on it.

Do the large banks charge for paper statements?

Not in the documents we read. Chase's fee page for Total Checking, read on October 27, 2026, lists a monthly service fee, overdraft, ATM, wire and money order fees, and no paper statement line. The Chase page prints no date, so the read date is the one that counts. Citi's account comparison page, read the same day, mentions no statement fee on its own text. The Capital One 360 Checking agreement, which shows 10/14/2026 near its top, requires paperless delivery, so paper statements are not part of that account by default.

Bank of America's Personal Schedule of Fees, effective August 7, 2026, lists no paper statement fee in our October 27 read. Wells Fargo's account fee summary (form CNS2016ED, effective July 28, 2026) prints a $0 "document copy fee" for statements and check images, requested at a branch, by phone or online. It also says there is no fee for online bank statements or access to Wells Fargo Online. Online statements are not charged there, and the summary prints no paper statement line.

How to pay less for statements

The cheapest path is the one the bank prints for you. Four steps cover most cases.

  1. Turn on electronic statements where the bank offers the setting. Poppy's FAQ says its monthly fee applies unless electronic statements are activated and enrollment is kept on, so the switch removes the charge. Vio's line applies only when you receive paper statements, and both Axos schedules list online statements as free.
  2. Stop requesting mailed copies. At Bread, five requests cost $25. At Barclays each mailed copy costs $0.50.
  3. Hold the balance. Robinhood's $2 charge applies only to accounts under $50 on the day the statement is generated, so a larger balance on that day avoids it on the schedule's own terms.
  4. Ask the bank before you open. For accounts whose documents say nothing, the answer may be a fee you have not seen yet. Ask whether electronic statements are free, and whether a mailed copy is charged per page, per request or per month.

Over a year, the difference is large. A monthly charge of that size costs $60, while the same account on electronic statements costs nothing extra. For a fuller comparison of account fees, see our fee study of 60 accounts, which also covers monthly maintenance, wires and stop payments. If you want the free-checking shortlist, start with the best free checking accounts and then check each account's statement terms on its own page. The checking accounts statistics and the high-yield savings statistics show the rate and fee context for the same accounts. How we compared

  • Documents. We read the fee schedules, account agreements and fee pages of 60 savings and checking accounts on October 27, 2026. Each fee is as of October 2026: the table dates it by the document's own date or, where none is printed, by that read. For paper statements we counted 59 accounts. One document had no readable paper statement line, so it is left out of the count.
  • Re-checks on the day. We re-read the Barclays, Bread, Poppy, Chase, Citi, Capital One and Wells Fargo pages for this article. The Robinhood, Axos, Vio and Bank of America figures come from the documents as read on October 27, 2026, and each row gives its document date.
  • Silent documents. We file an account as not mentioned when its documents say nothing about a paper statement fee. That is not a zero, and it does not promise that no charge applies.
  • No testing. Nobody opened these accounts or requested a paper statement to check the charge.

FAQ

Do most banks charge for paper statements?

No. Of the 59 accounts we counted on October 27, 2026, 11 charge for a paper statement, 5 state no fee or do not offer paper statements, and 43 never mention the fee in the documents we read.

Is an account with no mention of statement fees free?

Not necessarily. We count an account as free of the fee only when its documents say so or say the service is not offered. When the documents are silent, the bank may still charge, so put the question to the bank before you open the account.

How much does a paper statement fee cost in a year?

A monthly charge costs $60 a year, which is what Poppy Bank Premier Online Savings and Vio Bank Cornerstone Money Market charge when paper statements are on. The Axos and UFB charges are per paper statement, so their yearly cost depends on how many statements the bank mails.

Which paper statement charge is the lowest?

Barclays Tiered Savings charges $0.50 per paper copy mailed to you. That is the lowest of the 11 charging accounts in this table, and it applies only to paper copies, not to electronic statements.

Can I avoid the fee by switching to e-statements?

Where the bank prints it, yes. Poppy's FAQ says the monthly fee applies only if electronic statements are not activated, and Wells Fargo prints no fee for online bank statements. For Axos and UFB, both schedules list online statements as "Account Statement - Online Free", so electronic delivery avoids the paper charge.

Do Chase, Citi or Capital One charge for paper statements?

Not in the documents we read on October 27, 2026. Chase's Total Checking fee page and Citi's account comparison page print no paper statement line, and Capital One 360 Checking requires paperless delivery. For all three, the missing line leaves the account in the not-mentioned group, not in the free group.
